Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The B+W #920 wide-angle metal lens hood is made of black-anodized aluminum with light-absorbing flat black ribs on the inside and protects against contrast-reducing, uncontrolled, stray light. It is designed for wide-angle (zoom) lenses with angles of view up to 70° wide (approx. 28mm in 35mm format).

72mm Screw-In Metal Wide Angle Lens Hood #970 is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice, but... On my Nikon D200 I'm using a 68mm to 72mm step-up ring on a Nikkor 18-70mm DX (kit lens) so I can use my pre-existing (and pricey) 72mm polarizing filter. Unfortunately, this precludes me from being able to use the OEM lens hood that came with the lens. The camera (with added vertical grip) tips forward about 40 deg onto the front edge of the lens when set down, so I wanted this lens hood to protect the leading threaded edge of any filters I might be using. When mounted, this new lens hood does this fine, but for some odd reason, the ID of the lens hood isn't constructed to allow a standard lens cap to be mounted. So until I can find a lens cap that can mount over the new lens hood, it's an either-or option. EITHER the lens hood OR the lens cap can be mounted, but not both.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just cover it with a rubber hood Great product, but my experience with large lens hoods is that they get banged around a lot. This time I scavenged an old collapsible rubber lens hood and laid it over this one to make it more impact resistant. Looks great, feels much better to the hand, and will keep this from getting dented.
