G-Technology External HDD Overview

Add the speed and storage capabilities of RAID, Thunderbolt 2, and USB 3.0 to your Mac and Windows systems using the G-RAID 8TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array from G-Technology. This array features two SATA III 6 Gb/s drive bays, each of which holds one removable 4TB enterprise-class hard drive, for a total capacity of 8TB. The drives have a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and are configured in a RAID 0 array. Moreover, this G-RAID is outfitted with one USB 3.0 port along with two Thunderbolt 2 ports, which deliver daisy-chaining capabilities.

This G-RAID features an internal RAID controller which supports hardware RAID 0 (optimized for performance), RAID 1 (optimized for 1:1 data redundancy), or JBOD, with data transfer rates of up to 330 MB/s. This will allow users to access, browse, edit, and backup their digital library. It is well suited for demanding creative projects, such as those involving HD, 2K, and compressed 4K workflows. In addition, it may also be used for storage-intensive applications, such as audio editing, digital photography, music libraries, data backup, and more. This array uses a smart cooling fan to help ensure quiet operation, a long life, and data reliability, as well as an all-aluminum enclosure to help increase its durability.

While this G-RAID is compatible with both Mac and Windows, it comes pre-formatted HFS+ with Journaling for Mac OS 10.9 and later. It may also be reformatted for Windows and is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. Included with this storage array are two Thunderbolt cables, a USB 3.0 cable, a power cable, and an AC power adapter. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

question

How difficult is it to change the configuration from RAID 0 RAID 1?
Asked by: Donald
It is very simple. There is a utility to download from the G-Technology site.https://support.g-technology.com/downloads.aspx?lang=en

question

I want to setup a daisy chain as an additional backup. If my first 2 bay array is in raid 1, what should my second 2 bay array be setup as? I'm looking for a triple redundancy.
Asked by: Brian
Daisy chaining just allows you to mount more drives on your system through a single port. The devices to do not combine with each other. It will just appear as another drive on your system. You would most likely want Raid 1 again, but you'd need to copy any files from one drive to the other manually or using some backup software.

question

Is there a RAID setup for the G-Technology 1TB G-DRIVE ev ATC with Thunderbolt?
Asked by: Brent H.
Im not sure. Either call B&H or go to the manufacturers website. I can say that Im very happy with the performance but do make sure you are saving to a backup drive. These speed demon drives are like high performance sports cars and do have a higher failure rate than slower drives much like a Ferrari requires more maintenance than a Toyota.

I just purchased this drive and am not able to configure on my mac. It is saying I only have 4tb of space to use so I am assuming it is in RAID 1 mode, but no way of knowing for sure. Does anyone have suggestions on how to configure properly?

question

If I use this unit for storage to replace an Apple Time Capsule, can I connect the unit to a router by using a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter?
Asked by: Neal F. R.
No they only come with thunderbolt ports so you cannot use Ethernet or TB for connectivity with a time capsule.

question

Just received this external drive and it doesn't work. Message says it cannot be read! Is there a fix ... or should I just return it?
Asked by: Dennis W.
Not sure if you are Mac or PC, but,I just connected mine via USB to my Mac desktop, and it showed and accepted data with no formatting or issues. I would return it. Even if you can figure out a work-around or fix, seems like a price point where you would want it to work out of the box, or at least be given instructions by G-Raid as to the booting process...

question

Will the unit back up my photo files within the same folders as I have them in Lightroom? Or will the photos be in some other open list format?
Asked by: Karen S.
If you're backing up with time machine, yes. If these will be your working files, no. Once you move the parent folder (outside LR) you will have to refresh the folder's location so that LR knows that your photos are now in a different hard drive even if they are under the same structure.
