G-Technology 0G04097 Overview

  • 1Description

Add the speed and storage capabilities of RAID, Thunderbolt 2, and USB 3.0 to your Mac and Windows systems using the G-RAID 16TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array from G-Technology. This array features two SATA III 6 Gb/s drive bays, each of which holds one removable 8TB enterprise-class hard drive, for a total capacity of 16TB. The drives have a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and are configured in a RAID 0 array. Moreover, this G-RAID is outfitted with one USB 3.0 port along with two Thunderbolt 2 ports, which deliver daisy-chaining capabilities.

This G-RAID features an internal RAID controller which supports hardware RAID 0 (optimized for performance), RAID 1 (optimized for 1:1 data redundancy), or JBOD, with data transfer rates of up to 480 MB/s. This will allow users to access, browse, edit, and backup their digital library. It is well suited for demanding creative projects, such as those involving HD, 2K, and compressed 4K workflows. In addition, it may also be used for storage-intensive applications, such as audio editing, digital photography, music libraries, data backup, and more. This array uses a smart cooling fan to help ensure quiet operation, a long life, and data reliability, as well as an all-aluminum enclosure to help increase its durability.

While this G-RAID is compatible with both Mac and Windows, it comes pre-formatted HFS+ with Journaling for Mac OS 10.9 and later. It may also be reformatted for Windows and is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. Included with this storage array are two Thunderbolt cables, a USB 3.0 cable, a power cable, and an AC power adapter. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

    G-Technology 0G04097 Reviews

    G-RAID 16TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (2 x 8TB) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent, fast and noisy My computer was full and I needed extra storage that could be accessed on a daily basis. So I wanted something to be connected to the computer all the time and that was fast. This is excellent. I configured it so each drive had all my content, in case one of them failed. I am happy with it, I have space on my computer again, I can access my files in the drive as if they were in the computer, it takes no time to read a file. The four stars is only because it is quite noisy. It sits on my desk, right next to the desktop, and it is annoyingly noisy. I am considering hiding it in a drawer or turning it on only to pull things out of it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it. But be careful during setup. My plan was to use it in Raid 1 mode - 8 tb for data and 8tb as the Raid mirrored backup, on a Mac Pro. The G Tech webpage for this Thunderbolt 2 drive showed step by step directions for using Disk Utility to reconfigure it from Raid 0 (the way it comes) to Raid 1. The page also, at the top, had a link for downloading software to do the job but I followed the Disk Utility instructions. However, in doing that, Disk Utility secretly reformatted my primary data drive without giving me any clue. I.e., it applied my instructions to a different drive than the 16 tb drive that I had highlighted for the operation. G Tech support explained later that since my original data drive was a GTech Thunderbolt 1, configured by software, and this new one was Thunderbolt 2, configured by hardware, Disk Utility automatically defaulted to the Thunderbolt 1 drive without giving me any clue it was doing that. As a result my primary data drive was wiped out. I had backups thankfully. My suggestion for Gmail is that on the Thunderbolt 2 page they put a large caution notation saying do not use disk utility to set up Raid 1 and remove the misleading instructions from that page. That said, I am a GTech fan and have four drives ranging from 3tb to 16tb, and have never had a problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, dependable External Storage I use G-RAID's Dual-Drive Storage System for storing and accessing my 1,000's of RAW photographs using Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. G-RAID is the most reliable hard drives available. I was terrified by the stories of other manufactures used by some of my colleagues. Outstanding product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from G-TECH rocks the hard drive world! Time and time again, G-Tech never fails to amaze us, with their solid, rock-steady, high performing drives. My company is a post-production company, that edits commercials, and I can tell you that 95% of the drives we own are all G-Tech. I can count on one hand or less, over the 15 years I have been working, of a G-Tech drive failing. Trust me, we have had other manufacturers, who will go unnamed, fail on us after a few years. And with the pace we put our drives through, whether on a shoot half way around the world to on set on location somewhere local to back at our facility or shipping them to our other offices in NY or London, these drives take the abuse like no other and perform to their specs without a hiccup. They might be a little bit more in cost than other competitors, but like the saying goes, you get what you pay for. And especially in a professional work environment when hundreds of thousands if not millions is on the line, don't cheap out and try to pinch pennies on your drive storage needs.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product with terrible documentation This appears to be a good product but it's too early to say. Installing it was massively confusing because the documentation (in print and online) is seriously deficient. The box comes with a quick start guide that pretty much tells you to plug the box in and it will work. HOWEVER, if you want to configure the drives to be mirror images of each other (which is why many people buy such an expensive set up for) you are directed to the "User's Guide" online, which actually doesn't exist. Instead you have to bounce all over multiple articles in order to find out the particular method of configuring the drives and downloading additional software. It took an inordinate amount of time to figure out how to do this. The website also suffers from inconsistencies in nomenclature so that you have to guess which model you've purchased because the description on the package is different than that listed on the site's menu. Then, after the drives were reconfigured, I wanted to encrypt them, using my iMac 27. It took 9 and a half days of the computer running 24/7 for the encryption to complete. I had to check with the Apple tech support as well as G-Tech support to figure out if something was wrong and never got a straight answer. Again, I had to figure it out myself by digging really deep into online research. For this kind of money, I didn't expect to have to do so much leg work just to set up a hard drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from G-TECH RAID 16TB Thunderbolt Best iMac Friend. When you get the iMac 27 inch 5K push to the top of build to order by Apple you must get this unit to reach the full potential of an editing workstation build around an iMac 5K (Late 2015).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from faster then I thought pretty quick in raid 0, great value for the price i felt like. I would buy again provided it lasts at least 3 years. I've only own it for 1 month.
