Tilta ES-T16 Overview

  • 1Description

Providing you with an armor cage, while maintaining all access to all your camera functions, the Tilta ES-T16 Sony a7s Camera Rig improves your camera's ergonomics and makes it more useable on a video production set. Featuring a precision-machined anodized aluminum cage and rod system built specifically for use with an optional Sony a7s, this unit consists of the camera cage and rod support system with interchangeable lens mount adapter support screw, integrated 15mm rod clamp, and removable top handle. The cage provides over 100 1/4"-20 accessory mounting points so you can mount available accessories without stressing your camera's body.

Once the camera is mounted in the cage, the included HDMI plug protector connects the included micro HDMI to HDMI cable to the camera's micro HDMI port and is clamped in place providing a full-sized HDMI connector. This makes it easier to connect HDMI cables, and you don't have to worry about wearing out or damaging the micro HDMI port by repeatedly plugging and replugging a micro HDMI cable into your camera body. The HDMI plug protector clamps the micro HDMI adapter cable in place and also attaches to the cage itself, acting as a strain relief and providing a platform for the full-sized HDMI connector to attach, so it doesn't just dangle freely.

Incorporating an integrated wood grip for user comfort, as well as a removable top handle that features 3x 1/4"-20 accessory mounting points, a cold shoe, and can be positioned in one of 4 positions for best grip when shooting. The cage also includes a 15mm LWS support rod system, featuring rod clamps, a pair of 11.8" threaded rods, and 3 x 1/4"-20 threaded helicoil-type inserts for attaching the rod support system to an available QR/sliding baseplate, tripod, or other 1/4"-20 mounting equipment.

The cage attaches to the included 15mm LWS support rods via a quick release system that allows you to remove the camera from the rods for a minimum-sized shooting package or quickly remount the camera to the rods when working with rod-mounted accessories. The design of the system ensures that the lens' center height to the rods conforms to industry standards for using rod mounted accessories.

Top handle features an un-powered accessory shoe mount and can be oriented to extend the cold shoe to the front, back, left, or right. It is removable and is relieved to reduce weight and increase strength. The top of the handle features 3x 1/4"-20 threaded accessory mounting points.
The cage itself features 113x 1/4"-20 threaded mounting holes along the body. These mounting holes reduce the weight of the cage, while providing you with a plethora of mounting holes for attaching 1/4"-20 accessories without stressing your camera's body.
The integrated wood handgrip provides a softer-than-metal grip for hand holding your system. The cage incorporates a cold shoe for accessories on top, and camera strap attachments lugs that are held in place by set screws.
Mounted to the front left of the cage is a 15mm rod clamp that allows you to mount an optional 15mm rod for attaching more accessories to your cage, such as an EVF.
Included with the system is a 15mm LWS rod support system that maintains the industry standard lens center to rod distance for compatibility with optional industry standard rod mounted accessories. The rod clamps integrate a Tilta-compatible dovetail, allowing you to slide the baseplate onto optional Tilta-type dovetail plates. The baseplate also has 3x 1/4"-20 helicoil-type inserts for attaching it directly to a tripod or camera plate.
Integrated into the baseplate is a lens adapter support system that includes two different length supports, each with a 1/4"-20 threaded end. The system features a spring-loaded locking lever that allows you to adjust the height of your support to match your lens adapter's needs.
The cage slides onto the baseplate using a NATO rail type attachment. The built-in stop prevents the cage from sliding off the end, and the red lever applies tensions to hold it in place.
Spring-loaded locking levers are used on the system where appropriate, so that you can tighten or loosen the levers even if there isn't enough room to rotate the levers a full 360°.
You can remove the camera strap lugs from your a7s, and mount them on the cage, allowing you to attach camera straps to your rig, so you can hold it just as you would a naked a7s.

    Tilta ES-T16 Reviews

ES-T16 Sony a7s Camera Rig is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Cage So Far Title really went all out on this cage. They have come along way from when they started. This cage is very solid and the camera feels very protected. The best part unlike most other cages, is that you can quickly get your camera in and out of the cage without having to take it apart. Great finish and the wooden handle is a great touch. If you have big hands you may get frustrated getting to the buttons and dials on the top right. I have giant baseball mittens for hands and I got it to work for me. It is worth it, specially for the price and the fact that you get a full rails solution. These rails also work with practically any brand focus knob or matte box.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Camera Cage This is a wonderfully designed cage. It has good functionality except for one specific issue. Most people use the metabones adapter for their EF-S lenses, and I believe it is compatible with this rig, however I use a different lens adapter (the camera + version from @) and I had to make a few adjustments for the bottom of the adapter to clear the front side of the aluminum body. This included taking off the camera strap connectors that came with the a7s. Although this isn't a big deal, I could foresee an issue with other lens adapters as more companies come out with other alternatives for adapters. Other than the above mentioned issue, there is plenty of clearance for all functionality of the camera while still maintaining a protective, sleek, and beautiful design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great rig for the money I do a lot of research when making a purchase. After I chose the a7s I knew I would begin to look at rigs next. After studying the features on the + dollar cages, I compared then to mid priced rigs like this one. This cage came out on top as far as getting closest to the features on a high end cage. One thing I am not too keen on is the one way out lock plate. This limits what side your follow focus will have to be attached because the camera only slides off one direction. You can flip the lock bracket yes, But now the 1/4 20 wont be accessable to unscrew the camera from the cage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ikan cage snugs up Sony A7s I use the product with Sony ILCE-A7s for shooting professional video. I like the finish and the accessory set. The fit for the camera is very secure. Openings in the cage are provided for all the ports, so the cage doesn't interfere with the camera's functionality. (One minor quibble: the hole for the power on-off switch is a little tight for anyone with big fingers.) The HDMI adaptor is a huge plus, makes moving set-ups a lot faster and safer for the the camera. Now that I've used this for a half-dozen shoots, I won't ever go back to the naked camera. On the negative side, if you are buying this kit to round out your A7s as a complete video rig, you're not done. The rails are good, but there is no adaptor to support the Sony FE 70-200mm zoom. You have to kit that out separately. Likewise, you'll need to buy a monitor adaptor and possibly some additional flash shoe mounts, a lens shade, and if you go for this, follow focus. Figure another grand, at least.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product but some small issues I am a professional wedding videographer and purchased this cage at the start of wedding season to protect my new A7S. The cage is very sleek and sturdy. The multiple cold shoe mounts are very handy and are located in the perfect locations. The adjustable handle is wonderful as well. I how ever have a few small complaints. First, the top handle needs to be just a few millimetres shorter. When looking through the viewfinder, the handle kinda pokes you in the forehead. Second, and this one is a big deal. This cage actually rubs the paint off of the penta prism at the top of the camera. This can be easily fixed by filing down the aluminum on the inside of the cage, something I am now in the process of doing. I still highly recommend this cage with that being said. For the price and functionality this cage offers, you can't go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what you need I bought this for my Sony A7s, I imagine this was not made for any other camera. I use this rig for video stuff, do not buy it for photography because that's not what it was made for. One thing you must know before you get this is to remove those little triangle things on the ends of your camera that are used for the strap. I had the hardest time fitting everything in there and I was unable to open the doors to plug in an external mic. I finally figured out that the triangle things needed to be removed for a proper fitting. Once that frustration was out of the way, this product is amazing. I love how it looks, feels, holds and everything about it. I'm so glad I spent the extra money to buy this thing and I highly recommend it. Don't waste your money on a cheaper one that is okay, this one is more than okay, its amazing and well worth the money, and it looks very awesome and more professional so people will take you more seriously. I can attach more things than I know to attach. It is strongly built and makes me feel comfortable with younger people using my camera because I'm confident it is secure and safer in this rig, its like a case for my camera. For video stuff, I especially love this rig. Once your camera is in this rig, you won't want to take it out because that is kind of a hassle if you don't have the tools with you, but it's so nice that you won't want to take it out anyway. My trouble now is figuring out how I'm going to transport my camera with this rig because it is an awkward shape. I think I will be purchasing one of those hard cases that you can take as a carry on. I don't think it will fit very well into a photography backpack. But I didn't buy this for photography anyway, its for videos.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No base plate The rig should have a baseplate, but no, it is sold separately by tilta. It only cost almost $, more than half the cost of the rig, so technically the whole thing is $, which is overpriced.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This the RIG for a7S I bought this to replace a German made rig and glad I did. This is solid, well thought out, fits camera well, easy access to everything (a little tight getting fat finger to still photo trigger...but I use for video), great HDMI connector/protector. It is light but rugged. Haven't shot much yet... but excited to put it to use. My accessories work well with it, and all things lock snuggly in place. If you have a7S take a close look at this one to see if it meets your needs.
