Velbon PHD-66Q overview

  • 1Description

The PHD-66Q Revolver Head from Velbon is a 3-way head which utilizes a unique shift feature when moving the mounted camera from the horizontal position to the vertical position. The special revolving arm design allows the camera and lens to maintain their position over the tripod center column regardless of orientation.

The head and QB-635 II quick-release plate are manufactured from magnesium alloy, making the head strong enough to support up to 12 lb, while remaining light weight at just 1.4 lb. The head also features dual leveling bubbles and an independent pan lock for 360° rotation.

    Velbon PHD-66Q reviews

PHD-66Q Revolver Head is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect solution to rotating camera orientation I shoot with a heavier medium-format Mamiya 645 AFD. Flipping the camera to vertical with my old ball head was always a pain because it was so clumsy. The weight was then off-center and getting the frame square and level wasn't easy. The tripod legs were sometimes in the way if I had to rotate the the head. Also, the eye level dropped considerably and I had to then stoop a little or raise the center post, particularly if pointing the camera upward. I sometimes didn't attempt vertical shots because it was just too much trouble, particulary if my footing was a little precarious to begin with. I looked at some pan heads; there were a couple that I considered, but I had just about decided that an L-bracket solution would have been better. Then I discovered this tripod head. The head itself is well-made and sturdy, and I think it's a better solution than an L-bracket. There's no removing the camera from the head; just flip the locking lever and rotate the camera. The camera weight stays nearly over the tripod center. Eye level when rotated only drops about an inch. It also makes shooting pans a lot easier. Incidentally, there's an adjustment screw for fine tuning the rotated head angle so that you get exactly 90 degrees. Whoever at Velbon designed this head knew exactly what the problem was and came up with a great solution.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must own!!! I had been shopping around for a new tripod head and stumbled upon this Velbon. After reading it can flip to side maintaining the camera in its center, not having to rely on a L-bracket. I thought, hey this seems very quick and useful. Not only was it quick and useful but if your a cinematographer it tilts and pans. It has a nice panning handle. The device is constructed from plastic and aluminum, probably to keep the weight off, but I can live with it. If in the future Velbon decides to go all metal I'd definitely buy it.
