Manfrotto XPRO Geared Head with 200PL-14 Plat... Overview

This XPRO 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head from Manfrotto has a load capacity of 8.8 lb and can be attached to tripods or other support systems that feature a 3/8"-16 mount. It includes an integrated RC2 quick release cam lock and a 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate. RC2 compatible quick release plates such as the 200PL-14 can be removed from the head by pulling the cam lock's spring-loaded lever, which also allows the plate to be quickly reattached. The cam lock also features a safety catch to prevent the 200PL-14, or another compatible quick release plate from accidentally disconnecting.

Cameras, sport optics, or camcorders that are compatible with a 1/4"-20 mount can be connected to the quick release plate before securing it to the pan-and-tilt head. The head can be rotated 360°, tilted 90° forwards or 20° backwards, as well as 90° sideways for portrait orientation. Each of these three movements function independently of each other and have individual, spring-clamp controls. Squeezing each clamp's two handles allows the corresponding movement to be rapidly adjusted, and once the handles are released, the adjustment is locked into place. One handle on each clamp is also an integrated twist knob that allows incremental, geared adjustments, which help to ensure that any device mounted to this XPRO 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head is precisely positioned relative to the subject.

To further promote fast and repeatable device positioning, this XPRO 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head also includes dedicated angle scales for each movement that are designed for easy visibility.

Manfrotto XPRO Geared Head with 200PL-14 Plat... Reviews

Not what I expected from Manfrotto

I shoot a lot of Real Estate and this was what I needed. Unfortunately, it isn't solid or accurate. I'm not comfortable putting a $5,000 body and $2,000 lens on this thing. And why is there a proprietary quick lock plate used? Very disappointed.

Perfect for making fine framing adjustment.

It Took Me 40 Years To Give In :)

As a professional architectural photographer, I can't believe I waited 40 years to get my hands on one of these. The geared head has changed the way I take photos once again. I wish I would've had this 40 years ago I would have saved countless hours in preparation.

Not very stable/precise at all

I really like the way it works with the quick adjustment, but it just moves quite a bit if you touch it wrong. Geared heads are supposed to be precise and this one is until you touch the camera/head too hard in some direction it can move slightly from your set framing. (trying to get things square in real estate so it's very picky) I also hate it has a proprietary Manfrotto quick releases plate. Move to arca swiss like everyone else Manfrotto.

Sloppy

I originally wrote a 5-star review for this head on 8/6/2021. That was a good head that worked well for me, but I got rid of it to try something else. I recently purchased a new one that's junk. I now understand the bad reviews. This new one has sloppy side to side movement on multiple axis points while adjusting. It's hard to explain what it's doing. It's just a mess and it appears to be getting worse over time. Tightening internal adjustment points does not fix it. I've read similar reviews for the Manfrotto 410 geared head. It seems to be a common problem. I would have returned it, but I waited too long. I would stay away from this head until a redesign comes out. You might bet lucky, but you might not. I recommend purchasing the Manfrotto XPro 3-way Pan & Tilt head with tension adjustment. That is a solid well designed head that handles heavy gear with ease.

question

I see the body is plastic to reduce weight. However, are the gears made of metal? I'm just afraid that if the gears are also plastic that they will wear quickly and lose precision.
Asked by: Joseph
Manfrotto uses very good quality material. In the light there have been no reports at B&H as to gears failing for this head, we feel confident that the gears here are more than up to the task. You should get many solid years of service out of this head.

question

I've seen some reviews on this head from some unhappy customers. How is the play and gears on this head? I typically shoot with a pan/tilt or ball head but lately I've been shooting much more product and design/architectural assignments. I like the reviews on the 410 Jr but I want to stick with the RC2/PL220 releases.

Thanks all! I did purchase this head. It just arrived but initially I am pleased with the build quality and precise adjustments. Thanks again for the input!

question

How do I get the head off my tripod or tripod extension? I cannot figure this stupid question. What the heck am I doing wrong?
Asked by: dean
Look UNDERNEATH the tripod center column mounting plate and you’ll typically see 2 or 3 small inset steel set screws. Use a medium-small flat head screwdriver to loosen these FIRST. You typically don’t need to remove them entirely, but you need to loosen them until they are nearly out of the plate in order to unlock the head from the column. Once these set screws are loose, you can easily screw off the original head by hand. Reverse the process to mount and lock a new head to the center column.

question

From what alloy is the 405 constructed, and how hard is it? Should the gears wear well over the long haul?
Asked by: Robert
I can't answer the question directly, but I will say that I loaded it with a heavy camera and large lens and it performed well.
