Panasonic Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7 Reviews

So small I might loose it!

I've made 90% of my paying images in the past 25 years with either the Nikkor 105 1.8, the Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8. Looks like this is my new best friend.

Hunting for Focus

All the positive comments for the other reviews are true. I especially like that the lens is light, fast, and creates a nice bokeh. I only gave it a four because it takes longer to find focus than the Lumix 12-35mm. I stay in manual but use push-auto-focus to set up the shot. The 12-35 finds focus quickly while the 42.5 does quite a bit of hunting.

Amazing, Sharp

First of all IBIS does makes a difference. 5 axes already included on my G9 help a lot but the extra lens IBIS is always welcomed. Portrait photos look sharp and have no chromatic aberration on my point of view, so far my customers feel pleased with the photos.

Horrible focus on g85

The lens is very sharp and provides great dof, but it is so slow to focus and hunts all the time. I used this lens for an interview on my b cam. The subject kept moving back and forth and the lens kept over shooting when focusing. There was also a noticeable 3 to 4 second delay. I have no issues with the kit 12-60mm lens when set to 45mm as a comparison.

Great for interviews

Ive used this lens for a couple of documentary interviews. Its the perfect focal length for head and shoulders, and the relatively fast aperture provides a nice bokeh to keep viewers focused on the subject, not the background.

In their face

This is not a focal length that I use often, generally getting to it with a zoom. But this lens was so often recommended that I decided to try it. It is remarkably light and compact, and on my E-M5 is unobtrusive enough to capture pictures of the grandkids (the kids are too fast-moving to call them portraits).

As sharp and contrasty as the Olympus 45/1.8

Excellent lens! sharp and contrasty, ultrafast focus, smooth focusing ring, small, light and with a very pleasing modern clean design. It feels high quality, the fact that it's made in Japan probably add to that feeling, I suppose. Very similar optical performance to the well know Olympus 45mm/f1.8, but with significantly closer focusing distance, and of course the great addition of IS. Only thing I would change is the front threads diameter so it would fit a 46mm cap; with the current 37mm it looks a bit strange and protruding, just an aesthetic thing. Using a simple step up ring 37mm--46mm fixes it easily, and it just looks better. It's of course also practical, if your other lens/s have 46mm diameter you can now just carry extra caps/filters with one diameter.

One of the best lenses in the Lumix lineup

I've had this lens for a few years now. It may look like a toy but this is a powerful tool for any MFT shooter. This lens is fast, sharp! With a minimum focusing distance of 12 you can get some really intimate shots. I mainly use this lens for video when I need something that works with focus tracking. Soooo yeah... it's plastic, and I wouldn't drop it, or get it wet. But this is still one of the best native Lumix lenses for the price.
