Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Overview

Ideal for portraiture, the EF 135mm f/2L USM is a medium telephoto prime and a member of Canon's L-series of lenses. The long focal length coupled with the f/2 maximum aperture afford a great deal of control over depth of field for isolating subject matter and using selective focus, and the bright aperture also benefits shooting handheld in low-light conditions. In regard to the optical design, the lens uses two ultra-low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for high clarity, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy. Complementing the imaging attributes, a ring-type USM is employed to deliver quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control.

Medium-length telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 216mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords significant control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Two ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an rear focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is dust and moisture-resistant for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

I like this lens because it gives me heaps of options with my Canon C70, and it allows me to shoot very long shots with objects that are far away. Image is still sharp and the aperture is solid even in low light.

I was amazed when I viewed my first photos with this new lens! The bokeh is so soft and creamy it makes the subject seem three dimensional!! This will be a great zoo lens and outdoor portrait lens! SO GLAD i bought it! Incredibly SHARP!

I like L lenses a lot as they are tougher and more weather resistant than the normal lenses. I built my portfolio on the 100mm f 2.0 lens which I believe should have been an L lens. $500/600 lens. This lens is very much like that. It makes your subject look outstanding while the rest of the image fades away nicely and slowly. I found out today on BHPhoto that it is compatible with the 1.4x and the 2.0x. The look of this lens is very different than the staple.. 79-200mm 2.8 which I have as well. Combined with my 1DX the results are spectacular. I highly recommend this lens. I intend to buy the extension tube as well with this so I can use it for some close up work.

I've waited a long time for this acquisition. Sharp wide open and gorgeous bokeh. That's what we want right? I've got all the great and necessary L zooms and lately adding some primes. Got the 85mm awhile back and now probably the best focal length for my work-portraits. Carrying the 70-200 with my 1Dx is getting old-so am I! Might add a 5D to the equation down the road. Moreover I'm really pleased with B&H's quick free delivery and availability of this lens. For the first time I purchased an import version, The USA version has been back-ordered for 6 months or more. Who knows when or if any stores will ever get one. I was so happy to see the lens arrive in all the original Canon packaging absolutely no difference from the USA version. No regrets or worries. Thanks B&H

question

I am conflicted between purchasing this lens and the Canon EF 85 mm f1.2 USM lens? Is one superior to the other?
Asked by: Anonymous
I have both lenses, and use them on crop & FF. I want the 85 to be my favorite, but I've had the 135 much longer - it is definitely the more normal' of the two. The 85 is a huge lens, with 1.2 only rarely needed. I use the 135 on the 1DX, 100D &, previously, extensively on the 7D. If I had to choose, it would be the 135, but I know the 85 is a unique tool.

Hi there! I'm from New Zealand, Christchurch. I was wondering, how much would it cost to be shipped here? Will it get any duty customs? Thanks!

question

Why would you use an extender for this lense (Canon ef 135 f/2L usm)?
Asked by: Raymond W.
I have never used an extender with this excellent lens - simply, because I do not like using extenders. But I am sure you could do that.

I've just purchased this Canon EF135mm F/2L USM ...

I've just purchased this Canon EF135mm F/2L USM and no regrets. However, I purchased this primarily for portraits as was my use back in the days of film, but I'm reading on this site and others that the new choice is the way-pricey 85mm L Lens. I've the Canon 5D Mark IV (Full frame), so I'm a happy clam, I'd just like THIS groups thoughts on 135 mm vs. 85 mm for most portraits ????
Asked by: Robert
Hello, I bought this lens for portraits, but mainly Weddings. I had always wanted the Canon 70-200mm L series lense but found it too heavy for my weak arms. This lens give me nearly the same outcome without the heavyness. I love this lens. But I also have the Sigma 85mm. I find that I use the 85mm more often, but the 135 is also used during any portrait or wedding session. I change to different lenses during any session. I like the variety. I have the Canon 5D mk iii.

While this lens doesn't have specific dust and moisture resistent construction, Canon states that all L-lenses have a certain degree of weather protection. For those that have used this lens outside, have you found any issues? (e.g. with cold, mist, light rain?) I currently have a 5D IV with 50mm f/1.2 which is all weather-sealed.
