These drives provide the NAS 4TB of storage capacity for centralizing media and files in one location. You can access the data virtually anywhere by using computers, smartphones, tablets, Smart TV's, gaming consoles, media players, and more.

This NAS is powered by a 1.6 GHz Marvell ARMADA 388 Dual-Core processor, which will allow you to run multiple functions simultaneously. The built-in 2GB of DDR3 RAM will allow quick access to frequently-used files and programs, and network connectivity is achieved via the 2 x Gigabit Ethernet ports. Having 2 x Gigabit Ethernet ports not only provides network redundancy in the event that one port fails, but it also provides link aggregation to help enhance network performance and provide an enhanced HD media streaming experience. This NAS also has 3 x USB 3.0 ports and includes Milestone Arcus Surveillance software with unlimited camera licenses. This NAS is also compatible with Plex Media Server.

The My Cloud EX4100 is a high performance and high capacity NAS server for SOHO and home users that is well suited for centralizing media and files in one location, accessing and sharing photos, videos, and files from virtually anywhere with computers, smartphones, and tablets, HD media streaming to Smart TV's, gaming consoles, and media players, comprehensive backup solutions, and more.

The My Cloud EX4100 is pre-configured for a user-friendly setup and system management. It also has an intuitive dashboard that helps guide you through the process of setting up users and shares, as well as customizing system features and monitoring storage. It also features a toolless and trayless drive bay design and drive installation, helping to simplify the hot swap process.

This NAS also has 3 x USB 3.0 ports.

The My Cloud EX4100 features four SATA drive bays that can accommodate 3.5" drives and use NASware technology. If users opt to use WD Red drives with this NAS, NASware technology helps to further optimize WD Red drives for the NAS environment in respect to factors such as vibration compensation, optimized power usage, and data protection in the case of a power loss or disruption. However, please note that this NAS does not include any drives, leaving users the freedom to install compatible drives of their choice.

This WD NAS also features AES 256-bit encryption that helps provide additional protection for your data, and RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, JBOD, and spanning can be used to configure various levels of data performance or redundancy. As this NAS features a built-in processor, this means that should a user wish to take advantage of the RAID functionality, the RAID controller is integrated into the NAS and thus RAID functionality will be controlled by the NAS and its hardware, instead of being controlled by software.

The My Cloud EX4100 operates on 100-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz and includes an Ethernet cable and a power cord. It is compatible with Windows 8.1, 8, 7, and Vista, as well as Mac OS X Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, and Lion.

Plug in your camera or USB storage device to the built-in USB 3.0 port on the front of the system to automatically copy photos and videos with the touch of a button, making it easy to centralize your media content

Plex Media Server

Plex Media Server is used to host the content and plugins that are then streamed to Plex big screen apps (including Plex Home Theater) and Plex mobile apps, either on the same machine, the same local area network, or over the Internet. In addition to the platforms supported by the front end, the server is available for FreeBSD, Linux and nine different NAS devices. Plex Media Server can be configured to index content in any directory on the machine it is run on, as well as to automatically acquire content from such sources as Aperture, iPhoto, and iTunes. Content may be transcoded by the server before it is streamed, in order to reduce bandwidth requirements or for compatibility with the device being streamed to.

Plex Media Server allows extensibility through the addition of plug-ins. Many such plug-ins are available through the built-in Plex Online digital distribution service. This service can be used directly within Plex Home Theater or Plex Media Center's GUI.

Plex uses the metadata from several free open-source online libraries to automatically find all artwork, media descriptions, and theme music for the entire library.

WD 1TB Red 5400 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD Retail Kit

Tthe 1TB Red 5400 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD Retail Kit from WD is a mainstream solution for the higher workloads required by SMB (Small and Medium Business) users in 1- to 8-bay systems and meets the needs of the ZFS community. Engineered to handle increased workloads, this 1TB drive operates using a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 64MB cache, and a rotational speed of 5400 rpm, all of which help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers with a sustained rate of up to 150 MB/s. This drive also features high levels of reliability, with 600,000 load/unload cycles, <1 in 1014 non-recoverable read errors per bits read, error recovery controls, and 1,000,000 hours MTBF for 1-8 bay NAS systems. Also built into this drive are noise and vibration protection and WD's NASware 3.0 helps increase system compatibility, allowing WD Red drives to be more easily integrated with your existing network infrastructure.

General Features

Fill Your NAS with WD Red

Built for 1 to 8-bay NAS systems, WD Red lets users store their data in one unit

NASware 3.0 Technology

Built into every WD Red hard drive, NASware 3.0's technology helps improves your system's storage performance by increasing compatibility, integration, upgradeability, and reliability

Built for NAS Compatibility

Desktop drives aren't purpose-built for NAS, but WD Red drives with NASware are. WD's technology helps takes the guesswork out of selecting a drive. WD Red is for small NAS systems and WD's algorithm balances performance and reliability in NAS and RAID environments

Desktop Drives vs. WD Red

Desktop hard drives are not designed for NAS environments. Do right by your NAS and choose a drive with an array of features to help preserve your data and maintain optimum performance. Take the following into consideration when choosing a hard drive for your NAS:
  • Compatibility: Without being tested for compatibility with your NAS system, improved performance is not guaranteed
  • Reliability: The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is a hot one and desktop drives aren't typically tested in those conditions. WD Red is
  • Error Recovery Controls: WD Red NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within the NAS system. Desktop drives are not typically designed for RAID environments where this can be an issue
  • Noise and Vibration Protection: Designed to operate solo, desktop drives offer little or no protection from the noise and vibration faced in a multi-drive system. WD Red drives are designed for multi-bay NAS systems
  • WD Red for Home

Stream, backup, share, and organize your digital content at home with a NAS and WD Red drives designed to share content to the devices in your home. Red NASware helps increase your drives' compatibility with your devices, TV, stereo, and more

    WD Red for Small Business

WD Red is a good hard drive choice for 1 to 8 bay systems. NASware 3.0 allows for integration with your existing network so WD Red can share and backup files at the speed of your business. For larger businesses with up to 16 bays, use WD Red Pro

    3D Active Balance Plus

This helps ensure your data is protected from excessive vibration and noise in a NAS or RAID environment. This dual-plane balance control helps reduce the degradation of your drive over time

    Reliability

Since your NAS system is always on, a reliable drive is essential. With an MTBF of up to 1 million hours, the WD Red drive with NASware 3.0 is designed for 24x7 environments

    Cooler Operations

By reducing power consumption, the operating temperature of your NAS stays cooler. With a lower temperature in your system, you can create a more reliable solution for your NAS

    question

Hi, I need the device for a company of 50 users, all of these would be configured with offline folders, I meant their data would be online on the WD EX4100. Is that a good idea, what about the performance? what about the speed?
    Asked by: Nerio M.
The best use case for this device in a company of 50 users would involve users maintaining their own local working copies of files, and utilizing the NAS as a backup/archival drive.
