Sony 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Do it all with the Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens for full-frame E-mount cameras. Able to cover everything from wide-angle to telephoto in a single compact form factor, this lens uses a variable aperture of f/3.5-6.3 to keep size and weight to a minimum. Ensuring maximum quality throughout the range the lens incorporates one extra-low dispersion element and five aspherical elements that combat various aberrations. Also, it has a linear autofocus motor and internal focus design that provides fast, accurate, and reliable focusing. Further benefitting use is built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization that reduces the impact of camera shake, especially at longer focal lengths. The lens is dust and moisture resistant as well, for operation in less-than-ideal conditions. And, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

Designed to cover everything from wide-angle to telephoto perspectives, this full-frame 24-240mm E-mount lens can also be used on APS-C format cameras where it will provide an equivalent zoom range of 36-360mm.
A variable f/3.5-6.3 aperture helps keep lens size and weight to a minimum while still offering an outstanding 10x zoom range.
One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Five aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
A linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 134.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its actually a very good lens! After reading some not favourable reviews I was hesitant to buy one, but I felt I had to give it a try. I bought one OB from B&H and it looks like brand new with all the intact packaging, accessories in plastic bags and even manuals in a plastic bag. After testing it in various lighting conditions and using different focal lengths I can conclude that this lens in 90% of shooting scenarios is the same as having both : 24-70 f4 and 70-300. Also, Sony FF cameras can crop internally, so the focal length may be extended to 360mm with a bit lower resolution in APSC format. So far - so good in other words. Please see the attached images.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than my 70-200f4 I am not a professional but have just bought the 24-240 (did not care for the quality of the ziess 24-70 I had so was looking for kinda replacement) and have been shooting on the a7ii for a couple days. I already had bought the 70-200 F4. Honestly after doing many comparison shots at equal stops and distances I think my 24-240 is sharper over the same range than my 70-200. Because of that I have decided to return the 70-200 since I'm still with in my 45 day window. Not sure if I got a really good copy of the 24-240 or a bad copy of the 70-200 but between the sharpness, extra range, and almost macro ability of the 24-240 it is a no brainier for my needs. And $ bucks cheaper as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite lens I purchased this lens for a recent trip to Hawaii. I planned to do extensive hiking, and I did not want to have to lug around multiple lens. I was reluctant to purchase this lens because I require a critically sharp lens, and simply did not think a 10X zoom lens could deliver the quality I want. To my astonishment, this lens is plenty sharp. It is not quite as sharp as my f1.8 55mm, but I have to compare prints side-by-side to tell the difference, and then the difference is marginal. Because I generally use a tripod, the speed of the lens is a non-issue. Other reviewers commented on the weight of this lens. Attached to my a7rII, it was well-balanced and the weight was not noticeable. As an all-around travel lens, I can't imagine a better lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharper and lighter than I expected I've had this lens for only 3 weeks now, but have already shot hundreds of pictures with it. My test shots so far are turning out better than I expected. With my Sony a7 Mark II, I find that it is very well balanced, and does not creep at all when hanging from the strap. At the full 240 extension, I'm seeing just a small bit of vignetting in the corners (see example shots), but this can be easily tweaked by editing. I've read that people find this lens heavy, but for both my a7 II, and my Sony a6000, I find it to be well balanced, and incredibly versatile for outdoor photography. It auto focusses fairly quickly, and seems to take very clear shots in most situations. I'm extremely happy with it so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't Listen To The Experts It does just what I wanted and need. I wander around places: the woods on Lopez island, the streets of Paris, the shores of lake Washington (for example) and I want one lens that lets me gets panoramas or cormorants sitting on the pilings in the police mooring at Pont Austerlich, or the parrots up in the denuded Novemebr chestnut trees in Parc Monsourris. The tightness of the zoom ring is a great design advantage: I had the predecessor lens on a predecessor emount ant when I carried the camera lens down it always slid down to max zoom. That was pain. This lens is tight and doesn't do that. If you use the low digital zoom setting with the max optical zoom in good light conditions you are likely to get some amazing results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Way Better than Expected I've used similar lenses before in the past and know their pros and cons. This one used on my A7RM2 surpassed my expectations. I found it sharp at all settings! Yes even at 240mm I took head shots got crisp focus and beautiful bokeh. And shot at its closest setting (you also zoom to 240mm!) with great results. It's not built for low light but still worked for me. Disneyland, fireworks, handheld in rain storm. Perfect shots at 1/50th a sec! Wow! Shot at Fair twice with parade, action, again super impressed. Usesd it at 3 model shoots and true the variable aperture takes more working the settings around, the shots were amazing. Of course traveling with this is the main reason to have it. No stopping to swap lenses. No carrying, packing more lenses.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible quality I had high expectations for this lens due to its range and potential to be a good walk around lens. Unfortunately, the example I have has severe vignetting at 24-26mm focal distance and is not very sharp across the zoom range. Anything more than about 30-40% crop easily shows the poor sharpness. Images taken at 24-26mm must be cropped roughly 10% to remove the vignette. The lens also suffered from focus hunting, causing multiple shot retakes and lost shots. I would definitely not recommend this lens. I hope that this was a bad version but I don’t want to risk more lost shots due to poor quality lenses. I will be exchanging this lens for one of the G or GM models, either in the 24-105 or the 24-70mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really sharp for the range Used on a7r ii. This is the first lens I don't have any real issues with. 24-240 is a massive range. It really is wonderful travel despite being heavy (talk about later) It's not the best for low light, but with a7r ii I can push it a bit more. Not as much as a prime, but still quite nice in my opinion. I find it very sharp throughout all focal ranges. I was very surprised by how sharp it is even though it has a massive range. You can still obviously get bokeh with this lens and again, even though it's not a 1.4 or anything, I was still able to achieve some bokeh if I wanted. All in all, this is THE lens for traveling around if you only want to bring your body and a lens. It's heavy though... but worth it still. I haven't bought the planar 1.4 50mm yet to compare sharpness.
