All-in-One Versatility
Do it all with the Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens for full-frame E-mount cameras. Able to cover everything from wide-angle to telephoto in a single compact form factor, this lens is the go-to choice when portability, reach, and focal length flexibility are required.
Optics and Design
  • One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Five aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • Spanning wide-angle to super-telephoto, this is an ideal single-lens solution for travel and other applications where a minimalist-but-versatile setup is the priority.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures. Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Image Stabilization
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • A linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.

My default "go to" lense

Love the 24 to 240 range, its the lense I use most all the time. Makes taking pictures in any situation, (close up or far away) easy with out needing to swap lenses or carry and extra body and lense.

Good And Bad

I purchased this lens with very high hopes as I wanted a travel lens with a good focal range. I primarily do travel and landscape photography and don't like changing lenses a lot. I had seen in several videos that the newer lenses for today's mirrorless cameras are crazy sharp. I'll start with the positives: - Very well constructed, heavy lens - Great wide angle focal range - Very fast zoom Negatives: - Images look good at 25% on screen in Photoshop and Lightroom but when zoomed in to 100% very soft focus and not much detail. I sent this lens back and opted for a 70-200 f/2.8 lens for my general use lens. There is a drawback to this lens which is it is a fairly heavy lens at just over 3 pounds. I'll take the extra weight to get the tack sharp images I want. I really wanted this to be a great all-around lens but in the end, like the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Sony's marketing department for sure knows where to draw the dividing line and it clearly shows in image quality. If you're doing any kind of professional work and want tack sharp images you have to pony up the extra cash and get the G line of lenses with f/2.8 or better. I'll have to see how this works out and whether I'll need to get the 16-35mm f/2.8 G series lens to cover the focal lengths below 70mm but that's yet to be determined. Have to save up the over $2 grand for that one for a while.

I'm using this lens on the Sony ILCE-7M4 (aka 7IV) body, and it's a real mixed bag. I'm comparing its performance to my beloved Tamron 16-300 for conventional DSLR, what a great, dependable workhorse that lens is, but not for Sony full-frame. The Sony 24-240 lens on that body was terrific at a powwow, inside a field house in spite of multiple different types of harsh lighting, lots of shadows, motion, etc. I had also hoped to use it as a landscape lens. I have no idea what to do about the obvious vignetting. Scenic taken at 1/640, f16, 240 mm extension (all the way out), not edited except to down-size. Any ideas for a different lens for Sony full-frame that has such a versatile zoom range?

Does very well for its intended use

If you can't get sharp images with this lens, you are doing something wrong. In terms of optical quality, it's not in the same league as a 70-200mm f2.8 EF USM IS II Canon lens, but what you get at this price is amazing. This lens is capable enough to shoot weddings and portraiture. For a quick grab-and-go setup, you cannot go wrong here.

Long Term Report

I reviewed this lens when I first received it a couple of years back, giving it 4 stars. After a few years of use I have to say I'm very disappointed with it, in fact, I've pretty much quit using it altogether in favor of the kit 28-70 which is far superior for both focus and sharpness. Focus, the main thing I need out of a lens, is very poor across the range and almost nonexistent with a polarizer. And, I've learned after correcting too many images, that, when zoomed in with Photoshop, it's sharpness is spotty across the range. I've changed my mind about my initial 4 star rating. I'm going to get rid of it.

My wife has one and I knew what I was getting. Features and range make it a great travel lens when only one set up is possible. It is heavy but it was still manageable for my wife to take 8000 shots in two weeks with injuries to both shoulders. She took sharper shots that could be cropped than the RX-10 iv at 450-500 mm I was using.

question

This new lens seems like would be an excellent everyday lens for my A7 that will offer a lot of flexibility. Would there be any downside to using this as my primary lens as compared to the kit lens FE 28-70 (other then I'm out $1000)?
Asked by: Tom S.
Weight. I have both lenses, really love the 24-240, but sometimes it’s more weight or more obvious than I want. But is a great lens!

question

I am wondering how would this 24-240mm lens work on the new Sony A9 mirrorless digital camera. I know that the 2.8 24-70mm lens would be a better choice for this camera. but I'm going to purchase the A9 camera and with the cost of the camera and the 2.8 24-70mm lens I thought that I would purchase the 24-240mm lens because of the extra reach that you get with that lens until I can afford the 24-70 lens. That 24-240mm lens would make a good walk around lens in brite daylight but the 2.8 24-70mm lens would be better for night time photography. I'm I correct on that subject? Thank You!
Asked by: Anonymous
Hi you are definitely correct on the subject 24-240mm is a perfect walk around lens because of its versatile focal length however the 24-70 is better for low light photography because of its wider aperture of f/2.8 which allow more light into the camera sensor. The choice is yours with one note on the a9. For 24-240mm lens on a9 body In Continuous Shooting Hi mode, the maximum speed of continuous shooting with AF tracking is 15 frames per second.

question

Can you manually focus with the lens instead of using auto focus?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, you can. And you can do both, if you set up your camera for it -- allow auto focus to do its thing and then manually adjust after that.

Does anybody use this lens professionally?

Does anybody use this lens professionally?
Asked by: Marlon
I am a part time professional, I submit most of my photos to a Stock Photo Agency and thus receive compensation when one of those photos is purchased through the Agency (I typically get a notice most days that I made some $$, but those notices are rarely more than $10!) The 24-240 is one of my most used lens. Interestingly I've received some messages from other photographers when I've entered photos in other areas, like contests, being surprised I use this lens, that they think it is an inferior lens. Over the years I've used this lens without any issues, I've begun to believe either this lens gets a bad rap that is unwarranted, or I happened to get a superior one.
