Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Overview

Do it all with the Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens for full-frame E-mount cameras. Able to cover everything from wide-angle to telephoto in a single compact form factor, this lens uses a variable aperture of f/3.5-6.3 to keep size and weight to a minimum. Ensuring maximum quality throughout the range the lens incorporates one extra-low dispersion element and five aspherical elements that combat various aberrations. Further benefitting use is built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization that reduces the impact of camera shake, especially at longer focal lengths. The lens is dust and moisture resistant as well, for operation in less-than-ideal conditions. And, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

Designed to cover everything from wide-angle to telephoto perspectives, this full-frame 24-240mm E-mount lens can also be used on APS-C format cameras where it will provide an equivalent zoom range of 36-360mm.
A variable f/3.5-6.3 aperture helps keep lens size and weight to a minimum while still offering an outstanding 10x zoom range.
One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Five aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
A linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Reviews

Well, sometimes good, sometimes not so good

I'm using this lens on the Sony ILCE-7M4 (aka 7IV) body, and it's a real mixed bag. I'm comparing its performance to my beloved Tamron 16-300 for conventional DSLR, what a great, dependable workhorse that lens is, but not for Sony full-frame. The Sony 24-240 lens on that body was terrific at a powwow, inside a field house in spite of multiple different types of harsh lighting, lots of shadows, motion, etc. I had also hoped to use it as a landscape lens. I have no idea what to do about the obvious vignetting. Scenic taken at 1/640, f16, 240 mm extension (all the way out), not edited except to down-size. Any ideas for a different lens for Sony full-frame that has such a versatile zoom range?

Zoom Ring is TOO Tight

The optical features of this lens are good. For photography everything is OK, but for video the zoom ring is too tight. I was thinking that my copy is defective, visited the store and found out that even the copy on display has the same very tight zoom. I was told that it is going to become easier after some time. 1 month was not enough to see any difference. I bought a focusing ring lever on Amazon and even this did not help. If you are planning to use it for video do not expect any smooth zooming with this lens.

Everyday all-around lens.

I have purchased 3 of these lenses. I use them for two-camera shoots as well as for everyday good-to-go lenses. A bit less sharp on the edges, but coupled with the a1, well it does what I would expect and I am very satisfied. Not a G-lens, but good results.

This lens stays on my A7SIII

I have 5 lenses now for my A7SIII and this is the one that stays on it 95% of the time. The only time I swap lenses now is to go wider with the Sony 12-24 F4. Sure, there are sharper lenses, but the 24-240 range is so convenient - 24mm is perfectly fine for vlogging and wide angle shots and 240mm, especially with clear image zoom, is more than enough for anything in the distance. I wasn't sure it could replace my Sigma 24-70 and Tamron 70-300, but I'm completely satisfied with the image quality so those lenses sit on the shelf now. It's also slightly lighter than the Sigma 24-70, which is a plus.

A good lens. But, not as good as the 70-300 G lens

I really don't know if I like it or not. It is a good lens that produces good quality images. But, not as good as the 70-300 G lens. But, the 70-300 G lens doesn't have the wide angle down to 24 mm. Attached is a photo comparing the two. Decide for yourself.

High quality for good value

It's a tad heavy but performs quite well for something that I consider affordable. This lens lives up to it's specs performs as expected.

Does very well for its intended use

If you can't get sharp images with this lens, you are doing something wrong. In terms of optical quality, it's not in the same league as a 70-200mm f2.8 EF USM IS II Canon lens, but what you get at this price is amazing. This lens is capable enough to shoot weddings and portraiture. For a quick grab-and-go setup, you cannot go wrong here.

question

This new lens seems like would be an excellent everyday lens for my A7 that will offer a lot of flexibility. Would there be any downside to using this as my primary lens as compared to the kit lens FE 28-70 (other then I'm out $1000)?
Asked by: Tom S.
Weight. I have both lenses, really love the 24-240, but sometimes it’s more weight or more obvious than I want. But is a great lens!

question

I am wondering how would this 24-240mm lens work on the new Sony A9 mirrorless digital camera. I know that the 2.8 24-70mm lens would be a better choice for this camera. but I'm going to purchase the A9 camera and with the cost of the camera and the 2.8 24-70mm lens I thought that I would purchase the 24-240mm lens because of the extra reach that you get with that lens until I can afford the 24-70 lens. That 24-240mm lens would make a good walk around lens in brite daylight but the 2.8 24-70mm lens would be better for night time photography. I'm I correct on that subject? Thank You!
Asked by: Anonymous
Hi you are definitely correct on the subject 24-240mm is a perfect walk around lens because of its versatile focal length however the 24-70 is better for low light photography because of its wider aperture of f/2.8 which allow more light into the camera sensor. The choice is yours with one note on the a9. For 24-240mm lens on a9 body In Continuous Shooting Hi mode, the maximum speed of continuous shooting with AF tracking is 15 frames per second.

Does anybody use this lens professionally?

Does anybody use this lens professionally?
Asked by: Marlon
I am a part time professional, I submit most of my photos to a Stock Photo Agency and thus receive compensation when one of those photos is purchased through the Agency (I typically get a notice most days that I made some $$, but those notices are rarely more than $10!) The 24-240 is one of my most used lens. Interestingly I've received some messages from other photographers when I've entered photos in other areas, like contests, being surprised I use this lens, that they think it is an inferior lens. Over the years I've used this lens without any issues, I've begun to believe either this lens gets a bad rap that is unwarranted, or I happened to get a superior one.

is this lens compatible with sony a6000?
Asked by: Patti C.
Absolutely! I am running that setup, and love it! This is a really sharp lens, and using the crop sensor it uses the middle (sharpest part) of the lens.
