Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Overview

By B&H Photo's
G Lens, Macro Versatility
Get up close and personal with the 1:1 magnification ratio of the full-frame compatible Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens. As a G series lens, it perfectly balances sharpness and bokeh and, as a macro lens, close and controlled focusing performance is prioritized with advanced AF and intuitive handling.
Close-Up Capabilities
  • True macro design affords a life-size, 1:1 magnification ratio along with an 11" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects.
  • Focusing distance and magnification scale is printed on top of the lens to aid in more technical applications.
  • Focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between 11-19.7", 19.7"-infinity, or full.
  • This lens' focusing ring can be slid forwards and backwards to quickly shift between manual to autofocus modes.
  • Internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during use, benefitting focus accuracy and ease of use when working distance is a concern.
G Series Optical Design
  • Two extra-low dispersion elements, including one Super ED element, are featured in the lens design to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • One aspherical element helps reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Image Stabilization
  • Direct Drive SSM system, along with the internal focusing design, promotes responsive and precise autofocus performance that's also quiet to suit video recording applications.
  • Focus hold button permits manually stopping the autofocus at a specified point or the button can also be customized to control a variety of other assignable functions.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.

question

The ACCESSORIES webpage lists both the Sony - HVL-RL1 Macro Ring Light and the Sony - HVL-MT24AM Macro Twin Flash Kit as available accessories. However, there is nothing in the online manuals for either of these products which specifies that they can be used on a lens with a filter thread of 62 mm. Specifically, these products appear to be designed for lenses with filter threads of either 49mm or 55mm (via the supplied adapters). But the new Sony 90mm f2.8 has a filter thread 0f 62mm: Is it actually possible to use either of these accessories with this new Sony lens?
Asked by: Richard
Hi Richard, The Sony HVL-RL1 actually Includes Shoe adaptor (ADP-AMA), adaptor ring (dia. 49 mm/55 mm/62 mm).

will this work with the Sony a6600?
Asked by: willa
Yes it will work, since it’s an E-mount. It will effectively be like a field of view of 135mm for you though since your camera has a cropped sensor

Has anyone tried using an Extension Tube on this 90mm to increase the close focus?
Asked by: linda
You may use extension tubes such as the Kenko DG Extension Tube Set for Full-Frame Sony E-Mount, B&H # KEEXTUBEDG, or the Vello EXT-SFED2 Auto Focus Extension Tubes for Sony E-Mount Lenses, B&H # VEEXTSFED2, with the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens to reduce the lens' minimum focus distance for increased magnification.

question

Would this be a great purchase for portrait photography over other Sony E Mount lenses?
Asked by: Rodrigo A.
The Sony FE 90mm is a very good lens for macro shots and portraits. It is subjective and there are other very good lenses as well. As an option the Sony Sonnar T FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA lens is a faster lens so it is better in low light and can give create more of an out of focus background effect.

Does a tube extend out of the front of the lens with macro markings when focussing extremely close?
Asked by: Joe
No. The Sony FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS lens is an internal focusing lens and maintains the same overall length at all focal distances. Focusing markings are listed on the barrel of the lens between the lens body and the focusing ring, not on the front of the lens.
