Venus Optics Laowa 60mm f/2.8 Ultra Macro Overview

From macro to infinity, the Sony A-mount Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro Lens from Venus Optics is a prime portrait-length lens offering the unique ability to photograph close-up subjects 2.4" away at a 2:1 magnification ratio as well as distant subjects with infinity focus and a 0.1x magnification. The lens's construction incorporates nine elements in seven groups, and two of the lens groups move in order to control focusing and to avoid barrel distortions. This design also helps to maintain high image clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A rounded 14-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth out-of-focus quality that is especially beneficial when working with near subjects and selective focus techniques.

Prime 60mm Sony A-mount lens is compatible with APS-C sensors, where it will provide a 90mm equivalent focal length. This can also be used on full-frame, but vignetting will occur when focused at infinity.
The lens is capable of focusing on subjects as near as 2.4" away with a 2:1 magnification ratio for greater-than-life size macro shooting without the need of extension tubes or adapters. Additionally, the lens is also able to achieve infinity focus with a 1:10 magnification ratio for general shooting applications. When working with full-frame sensors, the image may be slightly vignetted when working at infinity focus.
Manual focus and manual aperture setting design does not maintain any electronic communication with the camera.
Nine-element-in-seven-group construction produces a high degree of clarity throughout the focusing range as well as accurate color rendering.
Two lens groups move during focusing in order to control barrel distortion.
Rounded 14-blade diaphragm produces a smooth out-of-focus quality when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
Built-in lens hood helps to deflect stray light from causing lens flare or ghosting.
All-metal lens barrel offers ensured durability and rigidity.
In addition to the lens itself, a protective filter pouch and a 62mm UV filter are also included.

Venus Optics Laowa 60mm f/2.8 Ultra Macro Reviews

Best budget macro

Had a canon 24-70F4 with a macro feature that was allright, but I prefer this one, gets in much closer for flower photography and bugs. It's got a nice all metal feel to it, and it came with a filter on the front as well. Don't let the fact that this is chinese made deter you from considering this lens!

Optimal Macro Lens

This lens is the 'gold-standard' for a true macro lens that reaches a real 1:1 ratio and goes one step beyond that, plus can take close up portraits as well. Optical quality is simply stunning.

Very nice lens,

I bought the lens based on the rating and reviews online, I normally use a reverse lens or tube extension to do macros, this is nice and compact. it allows for taking very nice pictures at close range for macro but still performs good in some instance for portrait. It is prime lens and I prefer it this way for close subject that move a lot. It has a lovely boke effect. I use it on a Pentax K70 and Pentax K20D. Versatile lens. Could not upload sample images due to size restriction but I have some examples taken with this lens #thestrangersinthebackyard

Still have a lot to learn but

Love it, crisp sharp photo's even a 2x with natural sunlight. Only complaint would be extremely small distance from focused unfocused but this is be expected and not in anyway a fault with the lens design.

Great macro lens with some limitations

By Rafael

The 2X magnification is great and the sharpness and detail are fabulous. Keep in mind that this is a totally manual lens with no electronic communication to the camera, so using it requires a different approach than normal lenses. The camera's light meter will work, which means it can be used in aperture-priority mode (set the aperture on the lens and the camera will set the shutter speed) either with fixed ISO or auto-ISO. As for flash, TTL works. Some of the limitations: the viewfinder will get very dark at small apertures, making it hard to focus. Not an issue for studio shots, as you can open it up to 2.8, compose and focus, then close down the aperture. Or use Live View. However, for field use (insects and flowers), where you don't have time to do this, the darkness of the viewfinder will be an issue unless there is a lot of ambient light. Also, the working distance when at 2X magnification is very short (a couple of inches), which makes insect photography more challenging. The lens is optimized for cropped sensors but can be used with full size ones with some vignetting when focused more than a few feet away. Severe vignetting when focusing at infinity. Focus breathing is noticeable, so for focus stacking it is better to use a focusing rail or bellows. All in all, a great lens for the price with excellent image quality.

Fun Lens

This lens makes great images! It's a bit heavy, but very sturdy. The manual focus means the photographer has to do a little more work to get a desired image- there's a learning curve if you've gotten used to auto focus, but it's fun to experiment, and having control over what's sharp and what's not, without the constant readjusting of an auto focus lens, is a real pleasure. Very nice lens, plus a filter and a padded storage bag.

The Venus Optics Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro Lens for Canon EF is designed for use with cameras that use the Canon EF lens mount. It is not designed for direct usage with Fujifilm cameras. If you are looking for a lens adapter to connect the Venus Optics Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro Lens for Canon EF onto a Fujifilm camera that uses the Fujifilm X-mount lens mount, the Vello Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Fujifilm X-Mount Camera Lens Adapter, BH #VELAFXCEF, and the FotodioX Mount Adapter for Canon EOS Lens to Fujifilm X-Mount Camera, BH #FOEOSFXRF, would be options that are compatible for your usage needs.

Is this lens compatible with TTL metering on a Nikon D750?
Asked by: Kayt
Yes and no. Modern TTL systems use multiple factors in calculating exposure. One of those is distance to the subject as determined by feedback from AF lenses. With manual focus lenses this is not the case. But the original and still most important feedback comes from the sensor itself as it reads the light coming Through The Lens when the pre-flash and actual flash illuminate the subject, so you should be okay.

question

Will this lens work with an Sony A to E adapter?
Asked by: Anonymous
I will start by saying this is a great, very sharp lens. It is a fully manual length so if the mount is correct it will work with any camera. You will need to set your shutter speed and aperture as well as focusing the lens.
