Venus Optics 60mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

From macro to infinity, the Canon EF mount Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro Lens from Venus Optics is a prime portrait-length lens offering the unique ability to photograph close-up subjects 2.4" away at a 2:1 magnification ratio as well as distant subjects with infinity focus and a 0.1x magnification. The versatility offered by this manual focus, manual aperture selection lens benefits working with close-up subjects and then quickly switching to full-length subjects at distance without the need of extension tubes or other adapters. The lens is optimized for use on APS-C format sensors, where it will provide a 96mm equivalent focal length, and it can also be used on full-frame format DSLRs, however some vignetting may occur when focused at infinity.

The lens's construction incorporates nine elements in seven groups, and two of the lens groups move in order to control focusing and to avoid barrel distortions. This design also helps to maintain high image clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A rounded 14-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth out-of-focus quality that is especially beneficial when working with near subjects and selective focus techniques.

Prime 60mm Canon EF mount lens is compatible with full-frame sensors as well as APS-C sensors, where it will provide a 96mm equivalent focal length.
The lens is capable of focusing on subjects as near as 2.4" away with a 2:1 magnification ratio for greater-than-life size macro shooting without the need of extension tubes or adapters. Additionally, the lens is also able to achieve infinity focus with a 1:10 magnification ratio for general shooting applications. When working with full-frame sensors, the image may be slightly vignetted when working at infinity focus.
Manual focus and manual aperture setting design does not maintain any electronic communication with the camera.
Nine-element-in-seven-group construction produces a high degree of clarity throughout the focusing range as well as accurate color rendering.
Two lens groups move during focusing in order to control barrel distortion.
Rounded 14-blade diaphragm produces a smooth out-of-focus quality when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
Built-in lens hood helps to deflect stray light from causing lens flare or ghosting.
All-metal lens barrel offers ensured durability and rigidity.
In addition to the lens itself, a protective filter pouch and a 62mm UV filter are also included.

    Venus Optics 60mm f/2.8 reviews

    Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens It's a great macro lens for getting really up close with your subject. Things as small as ants and the finer details of a flower can be captured beautify with this lens. If you'd rather shoot the whole flower though maybe go with something less powerful. As a minor grip, I find it odd how the front lens sink into the shaft without any sort of glass protection on the front. (Meaning you can stick your fingers all the way into the tube when the lens is retracted all the way back.) I've only had the lens for a month now and I worry about how to keep the interior clean. Before this though I was using a point and shoot so maybe other lenses are like this too, I just find it odd that they'd design something so expensive like this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from La-wow-wow! I love it! I've never seen anything like this! I use it on both my 5D's, and will also try it on the 7D sometime. It only vignettes on a full-frame camera near infinity. It's for close-ups, and does a magnificent job. I don't mind the manual aperture and focus. Fantastic little specialty lens, and it came with a UV filter already installed to block out dust.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Laowa Venus 60mm super macro I've used this lens for a month now and love it. I pair it with my Lumix GX8 with a simple m43 adapter. I have been using the Olympus 60mm macro for a year (whick is also excellent). I got the Laowa to go greater than 1:1. It stays very sharp up to 1.5:1 and stays reasonably sharp up to 2:1. This lens is excellenot if you will be going beyond 1:1 regularly. If I never did, I'd keep my Olympus on my camera bc it's lighter and just as good. But this lens will not disappoint if you are comfortable doing manual adjustments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from weird but good! It is hard for me to talk about sharpness without being able to compare it to something. I don't own the 1-5x Canon standard so I can't speak to that. However compared to a 100mm L Canon lens it was sharper at 1x. When judging a lens with high magnification you really gotta have a solid setup. Rock solid rails and tripod or gtfo with your claims about image quality unless you're totally locked down. Loads of chromatic aberration but I don't care because that's so easy to correct. Super ugly rectangular vignette when focusing on infinity. I almost feel like it should be disqualified from making the claim that it can focus that far. I guess on a crop sensor it wouldn't be an issue? Not sure. I have pretty weird requirements and it fits those perfectly so I'm thrilled. The build quality is good but the focus ring is a little crunchy. It's well damped but not smooth. Feels gross. The aperture ring extends beyond the stop points. Weird. Why? Feels sloppy. Whatever! Great value. Get it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unique lens I have had this lens a few weeks now and I am starting to get consistent captures with it. The lens seems to reproduce almost a film quality image. I am still experimenting with it and have not mastered to exposure and light balance. I am starting to use a light meter with it and I am getting more consistency.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome I really like this lens. It is my first macro and so I was uncertain about the manual aperture and manual focus on top of learning macro. It is very intuitive and easy to use. It feels heavy duty too, not like a cheap light lens. In researching this lens, I read that one concern was that you could stick their finger right in to the lens portion when it was detracted, but when I got mine it had a clear protective filter on it so that concern was not valid for my experience. This lens is VERY sharp and crisp. All my worries are gone, as I faced trepidation in getting my first macro lens and worry about getting the wrong one. The thing that drew me to this lens was the 2X magnification, and does it ever! I have taken pictures of spiders in their webs where the spider fills the entire shot and the detail is so intact that I can see the hairs on it's legs when I look at it later on the computer. I like that I can focus at a very close range (almost touching the subject) or from a distance. I am not restricted to macro only, if I see something abit further away I don't have to change lenses to capture the subject further away, so I can switch back and forth. I highly recommend this lens and am very pleased for my first macro lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Testing the Laowa 60mm Underwater I tested the Laowa 60mm lens underwater in combination with The Canon 70d, Ikelite housing ,dual Ikelite strobes and Light&Motion Sola lights. It was defiantly challenging underwater but worth the effort. The lens delivers great results. The images were nice and sharp once my distance was locked on. If your looking for an easy lens to use this is not for you. The Lens does not offer focus assist !
