Venus Optics Laowa 60mm f/2.8 Ultra Macro Overview

From macro to infinity, the Canon EF-mount Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro Lens from Venus Optics is a prime portrait-length lens offering the unique ability to photograph close-up subjects 2.4" away at a 2:1 magnification ratio as well as distant subjects with infinity focus and a 0.1x magnification. The versatility offered by this manual focus, manual aperture selection lens benefits working with close-up subjects and then quickly switching to full-length subjects at distance without the need of extension tubes or other adapters. The lens is optimized for use on APS-C format sensors, where it will provide a 90mm equivalent focal length, and it can also be used on full-frame format DSLRs , however some vignetting may occur when focused at infinity.

The lens's construction incorporates nine elements in seven groups, and two of the lens groups move in order to control focusing and to avoid barrel distortions. This design also helps to maintain high image clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A rounded 14-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth out-of-focus quality that is especially beneficial when working with near subjects and selective focus techniques.

Prime 60mm Canon EF-mount lens is compatible with APS-C sensors, where it will provide a 90mm equivalent focal length. This can also be used on full-frame, but vignetting will occur when focused at infinity.
The lens is capable of focusing on subjects as near as 2.4" away with a 2:1 magnification ratio for greater-than-life size macro shooting without the need of extension tubes or adapters. Additionally, the lens is also able to achieve infinity focus with a 1:10 magnification ratio for general shooting applications. When working with full-frame sensors, the image may be slightly vignetted when working at infinity focus.
Manual focus and manual aperture setting design does not maintain any electronic communication with the camera.
Nine-element-in-seven-group construction produces a high degree of clarity throughout the focusing range as well as accurate color rendering.
Two lens groups move during focusing in order to control barrel distortion.
Rounded 14-blade diaphragm produces a smooth out-of-focus quality when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
Built-in lens hood helps to deflect stray light from causing lens flare or ghosting.
All-metal lens barrel offers ensured durability and rigidity.
In addition to the lens itself, a protective filter pouch and a 62mm UV filter are also included.

Venus Optics Laowa 60mm f/2.8 Ultra Macro Reviews

Solid Lens

This is first time experimenting with macro. I shoot on a D7500, and would prefer to shoot handheld so I don't have to carry as much in the field. This review, and the included the sample shots, were taken handheld in the winter, with a speed light and diffuser. Personally I prefer wide angle shots, but I have seen some amazing macro pictures and Im a fan of bugs and other little creatures. I considered the 15mm F4, which I may get eventually but for now I am really happy with this. I also considered the 100mm but given that I shoot on a crop sensor I thought he 60 would be my best introduction to macro. This lens is solid and it is a joy to focus with. Perfectly dampened, maybe a bit tight but id rather have that. It has a nice weight, not too heavy as I think the 100 would have been, but with the speed light on top is is as heavy as I would want to carry. Im still learning it, how to get all the settings right with the camera and flash, and figuring out how to use my body to get solid and stable shots. Its a learning lens, you really need to experiment with it and get in close with the subject. This lens feels really good to work with, it is a joy. Venus Optics also has a macro master class on youtube which I really appreciate. So far I think it takes solid pictures. I don't pay too much mind to chromatic aberrations, or clarity around edges, thats not important to my work. Im shooting to gather information mostly for my paintings, and also because I just love being in the wilderness taking pictures. This lens, has a special quality about it that makes me want to get out there and figure it out. These sample shots are 1:1 and less magnification. I have shot some 2x with a tripod indoors and its pretty tricky to get the focus right. 1x magnification is really pleasing for what I do, but I can see the draw for the 2x and certainly look forward to some bug shots with that in the spring. Other lenses I use are - 30mm Sigma Art 1.4, - 35mm Tamron 1.8 (FX), and - 14-20 Tokina DX Pro. This lens is very close in focal range with the Tamron 35 (for my set up as the 35 is more like a 52), but it is a very different lens than the Tamron and will serve a unique purpose in my shooting. Hope this helps anyone who may be shooting with DX and curious about Macro. Its a joy, I recommend trying it out.

Had a canon 24-70F4 with a macro feature that was allright, but I prefer this one, gets in much closer for flower photography and bugs. It's got a nice all metal feel to it, and it came with a filter on the front as well. Don't let the fact that this is chinese made deter you from considering this lens!

The Venus Optics Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro Lens for Canon EF is designed for use with cameras that use the Canon EF lens mount. It is not designed for direct usage with Fujifilm cameras. If you are looking for a lens adapter to connect the Venus Optics Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro Lens for Canon EF onto a Fujifilm camera that uses the Fujifilm X-mount lens mount, the Vello Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Fujifilm X-Mount Camera Lens Adapter, BH #VELAFXCEF, and the FotodioX Mount Adapter for Canon EOS Lens to Fujifilm X-Mount Camera, BH #FOEOSFXRF, would be options that are compatible for your usage needs.
