Interfit F5 Overview

The F5 Three-Head Fluorescent Lighting Kit with Boom Arm from Interfit is a versatile photo or video lighting solution for portraits, products, or e-commerce in the studio or on the road. The kit includes three F5 five-lamp fixtures, each with a 20 x 28" softbox and five daylight-balanced compact fluorescent lamps. A boom clamp and boom that extends from 30 to 55" is included, as well as a 10' air-cushioned stand to support it and a 5.5 lb capacity counterweight bag to stabilize it. Two 7.5' air-cushioned stands are provided for the other two lamp heads and softboxes.

Having an overhead light has a significant effect of the quality of light in your setup. In portraiture and group photography the fixture and softbox can be used as a hairlight to add dimension to the shot by separating the subject from the background. Alternately, the boom light could be used to light the background or small cyc from above, while rotating the light allows you to feather the output to create a graduated background. Using a light overhead and pointed down at the subject's face produces a high fashion look, and when used in product photography this setup adds modeling to the item to selectively reveal its form.

The F5 head has a sturdy but lightweight polycarbonate construction with five Edison base sockets. Power can be regulated via three toggles on the unit's back panel that power on/off two lamps per switch and produce the tungsten equivalent of up to 800W. The lamp head has a tilting adapter with an industry-standard receiver for mounting on stands with a 5/8" (16mm) top stud. It's also conveniently designed to mount directly onto the included 20 x 28" softboxes without using a speed ring.

I'm space limited, what is the footprint of the stands?
Asked by: Diane
If you think of the base as an equilateral triangle, the length of the side is 28.75” on the two 7.5’ stands when the support bars are horizontal. You can reduce the distance some (down to 22") by moving the central bar up or down at the expense of stability but you can stabilize the base with a sandbag. The 10 ‘ stand has a longer span ... 29.5” or longer.

question

I have been looking at low budget 3-point lighting as I am a beginner. I have looked at many kits - reviews have often reflected how cheap and crappy they are. Everything sounds weak and flimsy...most reviewers advise to set it up an never take it down again because parts may break. I am looking for something a bit better than that as I will need to take it up and down at least once in a while. Is this kit what I am looking for? Low budget, but built a little bit better?
Asked by: Jeffrey
I use this kit for a monthly meeting that is videotaped and while the lighting is acceptable, the 'build' quality of the lights and stands is very cheap. Basically, the material used is mostly plastic, and not a very high quality. After 18 months, one of the extension lock knobs on a stand broke, rendering it ineffective in setting a position for one of the lights. Also, the handle on the back of one of the lights broke, requiring me to epoxy it back in place. Fortunately, we are able to keep the soft box on the lights each month for storage, so taking those on and off is not causing undue stress. Overall, don't expect these to hold up if you plan to take them on the road very much...invest in something with a better build quality.
