Sonnet TB-USB3GE Overview

  • 1Description

The USB 3.0 + Gigabit Ethernet Thunderbolt Adapter from Sonnet provides you a simple, economical way to connect one USB 3.0 device, and to add a Gigabit Ethernet interface to any Mac with a Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt port, or Windows computer with Thunderbolt 2 ports. This useful adapter offers native USB 3.0 support to ensure enhanced performance from the fast drives you connect, enabling data transfers at up to 350 MB/s. Featuring 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt technology, this compact adapter connects directly to your computer or at the end of a Thunderbolt device chain with its built-in Thunderbolt cable to enable fast data transfers between your drives, computer, and network. This adapter is bus-powered, so there's no need to connect an AC power adapter. It also supports 1000/100/10BaseT auto-negotiation and full/half duplex communication, enabling it to easily connect with networks at the high performance transmission mode supported.

USB 3.0 for Fast Performance and Common Connectivity
The adapter comes with USB 3.0 connectivity, although you can connect them to the USB 2.0 ports on your computer. This useful adapter offers native USB 3.0 support to ensure enhanced performance from the fast drives you connect, enabling data transfers at up to 350 MB/s. The adapter also works with multi-drive enclosures with hardware RAID controllers, too. This adapter also supports hubs and other USB 3.0 devices, and is backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices. If your computer already has USB 3.0 onboard, this adapter provides another handy port.
Gigabit Ethernet for Fast Wired Networking
Sonnet's USB 3.0+Gigabit Ethernet Thunderbolt adapter instantly bridges the gap left by the missing onboard port, plugging in between your computer's Thunderbolt port and the RJ-45 network connection, and enabling file access and sharing at up to 1 Gb/s. This Sonnet adapter supports 1000/100/10BaseT auto-negotiation and full/half duplex communication, enabling it to easily connect with networks at the high performance transmission mode supported. It also supports jumbo packet transfers (9000 byte packets compared to 1500 byte standard packets) to provide higher performance and reduced overhead when transferring large files. Handy LEDs indicate network activity and link speeds at a glance.
Simple Set Up
When used with a Mac computer, the USB 3.0 + Gigabit Ethernet Thunderbolt adapter requires no driver installation, as the necessary drivers are already installed. When connected to a Windows PC, a simple Ethernet driver download and installation is all that's required to get you going. Setup is simple, just configure the adapter settings through the OS X Network control panel or Windows device manager.
Bus Powered
This device is bus-powered, so there's no need to connect an AC power adapter. Wherever you use it, the Sonnet USB 3.0+Gigabit Ethernet Thunderbolt adapter is a simple and cost-effective solution that enables you to connect your USB 3.0 peripheral and get connected to a wired network at the same time, without hassle.

    Sonnet TB-USB3GE Reviews

USB 3.0 + Gigabit Ethernet Thunderbolt Adapter is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Missing Some Ports? Here ya go... I have two MacBook Pros, one 2011 with no USB 3.0 port, and a 2014 with no Ethernet port. This one device works great for both notebooks. Simple plug n play. Ethernet takes a moment to communicate it's presence. For USB, you may need an external power supply for some conventional external hard drives that are normally bus powered (ie: non solid state), otherwise works brilliantly. Have purchased from Sonnet before and found their products both useful, good value and well made. If you want to take advantage of the higher speed transfer rates, this one device is well worth the expenditure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect to add a USB3 port to older macs I use this adapter to obtain a higher speed with external hard drives on a older macbook pro which only has usb 2.0, it does the job perfectly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as intended, but cable is too short I'm using this on an iMac w/ i7 processor and Mac OS 10.8.5. I've attached a variety of different brand USB 3 hard drives and they've all mounted fine and have demonstrated good access speed. The one caveat is that the attached Thunderbolt cable is way too short. With the unit plugged into my iMac the cable is so short that the unit doesn't even sit on the desk. It's partially hanging in the air. Unfortunately the cable is molded into the unit so it can't be swapped out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Handy device, a bit bulky, driver tricky My MacBook Air (A1466) didn't come with an Ethernet port, so this works quite well, in providing that and an additional USB port. It's a tiny bit smaller than a stack of playing cards L x W wise, and a little thicker. I do wish there was a way to make it more compact (and less expensive). I read some detailed instructions on how to install the driver on the company's support PDF, but it all relies on linking to the Broadcom web site. It was hard to tell if the link was correct or not, because the product name differed/didn't appear on the destination page, and it listed a bunch of different drivers. So I tracked down the mentioned 17.0.0.3 driver on another site, installed w/ DPInst, and that seemed to work (in Windows). Prior to that, some USB storage devices didn't get recognized when connected. In Mac, no extra driver was needed. It does make good use of the Thunderbolt port and the transfer speed is as expected; just wish it was smaller and didn't get as warm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The adapter works I've only just purchased the adapter. I don't know for long term. But it works as expected. I've added a 3.0 usb 7 port hub. I now have plenty of room for 3.0 usb expansion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works! I spent over $200 for a Thunderbolt dock that didn't last two years. I bought this product and a usb 3.0 hub and I'm back in business.
