3DR Solo overview

  • 1Description

Designed from the ground up as a companion to the GoPro HERO, the Solo Quadcopter from 3D Robotics features aerial imaging-specific flight modes including Cablecam mode and Follow Me. A quad-rotor configuration, flight stability and autonomous flying are enabled thanks to a twin computer flight control system. The flight controller relies on GPS for navigational coordinates, plus uses data from gyros, accelerators, and other sensors to keep the aircraft safely flying. The Solo is designed to be paired with the separately available Solo Gimbal, a 3-axis stabilizer compatible with the a GoPro HERO3+ or HERO4 action camera.

This is a ready-to-fly bundle, featuring a pre-bound transmitter (radio controller) that has been styled after a video game controller for more intuitive operation. In addition to dual joysticks for flying, it features dedicated dials for operating the optional Solo Gimbal. In addition to the transmitter, there is a mobile app for iOS and Android devices. The app provides full control over the aircraft, gimbal, and even the GoPro itself. A mount is provided so that you can mount your smartphone or tablet up to 8" directly to the transmitter.

A flight battery providing up to 25 minutes flying time as well as a charger are included. In addition, the included transmitter features its own dedicated battery.

"Smart Shot" Aerial Video Flight Modes

Lock the Solo onto a virtual cable between any two points in space - even at different altitudes. This allows you to create a linear tracking shot with the ability to pan and tilt the camera freely. Any deviation from the "cable" is automatically prevented. Additionally, the Solo can memorize your first and last frames and pan the camera between them - all you have to do is use one stick on the controller to move Solo up and down the cable
The Solo can automatically circle any subject of your choosing, keeping the camera pointed at the subject to capture an iconic "wrap-around" shot. You can adjust the circle's radius to get the exact frame you want, even midflight
With one touch Solo will fly up and away from you, keeping the camera centered on you so the scenery around you expands in a dramatic aerial pullout shot
Follow Me
In this mode the Solo with track a GPS-enabled mobile device. It can follow from behind, stay beside the subject, or fly ahead with the camera looking back

Dual Computer Flight Control System

The flight control system incorporates two computers, enabling advanced autonomous flying features such as Cable Cam and Follow Me. Additionally, splitting up the work across two computers reduces the likelihood of mechanical failure in flight for an even safer flying experience
    One-Button Flying
Take off, land, and return home automatically. And if you panic, don't worry: There's the "pause" button - much like a video game
If you need to release the controls for a moment or wish to capture a static shot, simply press the "Pause" button for the Solo to hold in a fixed hover. When you're ready, just press "Pause" again to resume flying
    Safety Net
This flying mode limits the range and altitude the Solo can fly. Typically, the maximum flight ceiling is restricted to less than 400' and the aircraft is limited to flying within a user-specified radius

    Handheld Transmitter

    Video Game-Style Controls
The transmitter (radio controller) features ergonomics inspired by video game controllers. This design is intended to make it easier for pilots just starting out to learn how to fly

Mobile App for iOS and Android

The full-featured app for iOS and Android puts total aircraft control at your fingertips. It allows you to operate the quadcopter itself, the Solo Gimbal (available separately), and even the GoPro. A mobile device holder is included for smartphones and tablets up to the size of the iPad mini
      GoPro Operation
Not only does the app provide access to controls not available through the transmitter, it can also be used to operate the GoPro. Recording start/stop and select camera settings can be changed through the app

Note: This feature requires the separately available Tarot gimbal to act as an interface

      Works with Solo Gimbal

The separately available Solo Gimbal allows you to mount a GoPro HERO3+ or HERO4 action camera while providing 3-axes of stabilization. The gimbal allows panning and tilting via controls on the Solo transmitter and also keeps the horizon of your shots level, unless otherwise desired
        HDMI Output
For live FPV monitoring in HD, there is a an HDMI port built into the transmitter. With it you can connect a monitor or FPV goggles

        Additional Features

        Accessory Bays
Accessory bays provide installations points for the option Solo gimbal as well as future upgrade components

        3DR Solo reviews

Solo Quadcopter (No Gimbal) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 93.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad customer Service, Drone has issues At first i loved this product, but then i started to use it. It takes forever to lock GPS, and continues to loss its signal while flying. It crashed because of bad software, and they did nothing to fix it. Gimbal cant handle 20kmh, it shuts down in high speed and will frek you out when you think your flying full sideways..IT cost the same price as the DJI but comes without a GIMBAL or A camera, so save up double what youd think because it cost $$cad for the gimbal and $$for the gopro 4. it has three settings Low Med or Hi, and Hi will void your warrenty.. pretty much.. so GO with DJI, i did after so much trouble and i love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 3DR Solo, great idea, great support I love the Solo. Great features like cable-cam and selfie mode. Unfortunately I'd had some issues with mine, but I ended up talking directory with the guys in California and they were very helpful. My Solo is on it's way back to them with a supplied return shipping label. At least I am confident that they are doing their best to make sure that I get taken care of. It's waaaaaayyyy more than I can say about having to deal with a company in China. I'll stock with US made / support anything these days. Solo is no different. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure they'll take care of my Solo and I'll be back in the air in no time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT buy this product!!! This product is buggy as hell. We have had nothing but trouble with this copter since its arrival. I think it was released way before it should have been. The promo video for the copter is much better than the actual product is. We had a very important shoot earlier this week and the 3DR was purchased specifically for the aerials we needed. The gimbal is not available yet first problem, and once we jerry rigged another gimbal to the copter it would not fly. First it was magnetic interference then it would not connect to the satellites before the battery went dead. A fellow videographer I know in CA had the same trouble. This copter is on its way back to B&H today!! Buy a DJI instead. -G

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A review short and complete I have bought different drones before and will tell you that if you're looking for a nice drone with all the options and with a lot of future this is the one. It's super easy to fly even if you're a beginner, very stable even in windy conditions. With different modes (cable cam, orbit etc.) will help you to get that Movie shot that you ever dreamed and with less budget than Hollywood. Orbit, Cable Cam... Isonly the beginning of the different programs that will be released for him and didn't mention the gadgets that will come soon like the parachute. The only thing that I'm waiting is for the gimbal but talking about the aircraft... is the future of drones.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent choice for beginners! I did have any experience flying a drone, so I choose the 3DR Solo because its futures like return home, self return home if signal is lost. 1st fly was a pleasant experience with no issues. The 3DR instructional videos are very helpful and easy to follow. At first I bought the Solo with No Gimbal, but the video from my Gopro 4 Black was not steady. Then, I decided to get the Gimbal and then the video and control improve dramatically. I could see any subject bellow the 3DR in addition to control when to start video recording. I have the 3DR for 2 weeks and when I fly it, I feel a boy again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good Drone let down by Horrific Customer Service Buyer beware! I was happy with my Solo until an unfortunate accident damaged a motor pod. They determined that it was my fault, even though two screws were missing to the motor pod that was damaged. Two weeks of back and forth and they tell me that I can order parts on their web site. I ordered those back in July. 4 weeks later, still nothing. Weeks of back and forth and they finally own up to the fact that they do not have parts. They still need to come from China. Their official policy is that replacement parts are accessories and these are taking 6 weeks to ship. Yes, 6 weeks. So, if you crash your Solo, 3DR will take 6 weeks to ship you a replacement part. They have no infrastructure to support this product. So buyer beware, there is not support to speak of for your Solo if and when you need it. Knowing what I know now in August 2015, I would buy another product or wait till next year when they hopefully sort things out. On top of that the gimbal is vaporware. More excuses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Sweet Without the gimbal I can't say yet how most of the controls are. Right now the way the Solo flies and the easy of use to program flight modes is wonderful. Much smoother than the Phantom 2/3 and flies more like a larger drone. Also the fit and style of the drone is sweet. Everything is black and nice looking. Controller is so much larger and better looking than anything I have used. Way better than the standard DJI controllers on the Phantom and Inspire and there is no comparison to the joke RC style controller that most systems come with that have 100 switches on them. You know....just in case you want to fly a drone AND a train.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Advanced Quadcopter After doing a lot of research, I decided on the Solo and I am glad that I did. The quadcopter is solidly built, and I like its design. It is powerful, and I love the integration with the gimbal. With the included Solo App, I can see everything on the controller and tablet (I use a Nexus 7 with mine). I can see what the GoPro sees, along with important data such as battery percentage, altitude, and other essentials for flight. So far, I haven't found a single issue with it!
