Lunt Solar Systems LE70 OTA overview

  • 1Description

Applying their solar-viewing experience and technologies to a nighttime scope, Lunt Solar Systems created the 2.75" / 70mm f/6 ED Doublet Refractor. It employs extra-low dispersion (ED) glass with a doublet lens system to correct for chromatic aberration to virtually eliminate color fringing and comas. Further enhancing the optical properties of the scope are fully multicoated optics that increase light transmission to create bright and clear images. Its 2.75" aperture and short 420mm focal length make this an ideal grab-and-go option for near-space observations of the Moon and planets, or wide-field astrophotography.

To ensure users can achieve tack-sharp images, Lunt outfitted the scope with a 2" Crayford-style focuser. Unlike a traditional rack-and-pinion focuser, the Crayford-style uses a steel rod held tightly against the drawtube to provide a toothless friction system that eliminates backlash and enables ultra-fine precision focusing. It features a larger coarse-focus knob and a smaller micro-focusing knob with a 10:1 reduction for ultra-fine focusing capabilities. To expand the usability of the OTA, a 2"-to-1.25" adapter is included for the focuser allowing for a wider array of eyepieces and accessories.

The scope is offered here without a mount or tripod, but can be easily mounted with the addition of an optional Vixen or Losmandy-style dovetail plate. Holes on the top of the OTA provide a mounting point for a user-supplied finderscope.

Lunt Solar Systems LE70 OTA reviews

    2.75" / 70mm f/6 ED Doublet Refractor (OTA Only) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fine small refractor Anyone looking for a small, lightweight refractor with excellent optical performance will be well-pleased with this scope. The scope shipped quickly and was perfectly collimated - the diffraction rings were concentric and clean. No appreciable CA in-focus and with a 2.5mm Radian EP (168x) at 60x/in, the moon was still nice and sharp with a wealth of detail. Focusser was a tad stiff for my taste, but then again I'm used to FT focussers which cost a lot more than this entire scope. It would get four stars at $, but at $ , five stars is appropriate for value.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent workmanship I like the fine mechanical parts and smooth focuser. Being an ED scope, it does show a little bit of chromatic aberration on high contrast targets, but it's a lot better than an ordinary achromat. It does not claim to be an apo, so it is just right, although my cheaper Barska Magnus has better color correction that this one at the expense of fine mechanics. Sharpness is great, as I was able to capture finer details than my achromatic 80mm.
