    Tascam DP-24SD reviews

    DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from introduction into digital multitrack recording This is my 1st recorder of its' kind. And I am glad I chose this unit over the others. This unit is very easy to use. Haven't really read the manual. The UI is great and the layout makes it easy to get around. Really fun workflow. I've used nothing but hardware from day one. I will never run any PC, DAW, etc. This unit will make a great addition in my setup. If you're on the fence about getting this, don't hesitate. It is really easy to use. Even for a beginner like me. As always, B&H Photo has great, dependable service. I am definitely a returning customer. After I've really put this unit through its' paces, I'll come back and update my review.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Never recorded so much in my life! Computers are great, but they ask to many questions, for getting sound ideas down, nothing is simpler. The preamps sound great and the effects are usable but i would definitly not commit any and mix in a DAW on a computer. But this thing just asks the right questions: select sources, select tracks, set levels, record, rewind, start over! I had it for 2 weeks and i've been working on musical projects every day since!Arrived promptly, 3 days, even over Canadian border. Only bad side, price went down $ the day after i ordered it... guess that's life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Multi Track Recorder This stand alone multi-track recorder had a steep learning curve for me, but, after learning basic operations such as open menu, create and/or load songs; assign microphone XLR/TRS jacks to a channel (easy) and basic recording operations, this unit is very fun to operate. Granted this unit has been out for quite a few years, and I had debated buying the 32 track recorder, but opted for this 24 track and have had a blast. Send effects unit ( taking a dry unaltered recording signal and making it wet adding effect with an effect such as reverb or delay) was tricky. Recommend turning the volume all the way up and adjust down to get the effect to your monitors. This unit is so much fun am now going to splurge on some really nice microphones. My recording will include solo work with and without keyboard; trio and quintet jazz and ensemble work, and larger ensembles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wicked bang for the buck!!! First off, I've had my unit for over 6 months now and have used it quite a bit during that timeframe (with zero problems I may add), so this is not one of those useless reviews from someone who is just happy to have a new toy! I intentionally waited until I got a feel for what could and couldn't be done with it and how well it would hold up from nearly daily use. For what you get with the DP-24, you are practically stealing it from them at $500. At $400 or less, you should be prosecuted if you don't buy it! For what you get for your money nobody should complain about a single thing, unless it's a reliability issue, of which I've had none. But for other buyers who somehow think they should have a fully automated SSL or Neve at their fingertips for this kind of money, they'd probably complain about the taxes they pay from having won the lottery! If you are not looking to make recordings that rival mega-buck studios and don't want to f around with computers, plug-ins, and clicking a mouse instead of sliding faders and turning knobs, this may be your dream come true. There are scant few affordable offerings out there for people who want a functional, self-contained (or close to it) mixer/recorder that has an analog/old school feel to it, and in fulfilling that segment of the population, TASCAM hit a massive home run with this...a grand slam, I'd say! I don't think anyone is going to record a Grammy winning album with this (although not impossible if mastered by a pro), but they could certainly produce a very good demo and deliver a very solid product if everything else in the recording chain is up to snuff. I honestly wasn't expecting it to sound and perform as good as it does, but I've been very impressed with what the DP-24 delivers on every level. You can't do EVERYTHING you've ever thought of with it, but if it fits the parameters of what you need, I cannot possibly imagine anyone not truly appreciating what it can do and what you are really getting for the money!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent all the way around The task I am DP24 is so easy to use, intuitive and sounds super nice. You can edit, silence, cut and paste right on the machine and the onboard effects a really nice. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone specially for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for home studio I'm glad TASCAM still makes stuff like this. Multitracking on this thing is much easier than trying to record onto a computer. It's design is intuitive if you've used a mixer or a multitrack recorder before. Laying down tracks has never been easier for me. The built in effects are quite useful if you don't already have a compressor and/or effects processor. They are more limited than a DAW or actual hardware but with proper planning, some very good mixes can be made. There also are effect send ports so you can still affect the track either as it's going down or when it's being mixed. If you are looking for a cheap and efficient way to record in a home studio, look no further. The bang for the buck here is enormous. My only beef is that it only records at 48K sample rate. Most DAWs are capable of 192K samples at 32 bit depth. (If the sound card is good enough). If you like to work with hardware instead of software, get one of these. The amount you would have to spend on a DAW program, a direct box, and a new sound card would put you in the hole much more than this will. You won't have screw around with plugins in a DAW or PC to make some decent music.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much easier than on my computer, by far! Finally gave up on computer based recording and wish I had done it long ago. For a small home studio, this is the only way to go for me. The low price is just a bonus and a big one at that. A++
