Nikon 135mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

A medium telephoto prime with unique capabilities, the Nikon AF DC-NIKKOR 135mm f/2D is an ideal lens for portraiture due to its Defocus Image Control function along with its bright maximum aperture. The DC feature allows you to control the degree and placement of blur in an image, with the ability to make subjects stand out from the background or blur the foreground. The fast f/2 maximum aperture also contributes to depth of field control as well as benefits working in low-light conditions. Benefitting image quality, individual elements feature a Super Integrated Coating that controls flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in bright and backlit conditions. Additionally, a rear focusing system promotes faster, more responsive focusing performance and maintains the overall lens length during use.

Prime telephoto lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 202.5mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/2 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and using selective focus techniques.
Unique Defocus Image Control system allows you to control the degree and placement of soft focus in the image; by turning the DC ring, you can blur either the foreground or the background or produce an overall soft focus effect.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
A rear focusing design is also used, where only the rear lens group is moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

This system is compatible with select Nikon DSLRs that support D-type lenses. Autofocus is not supported by DSLRs lacking an autofocus motor, such as the D3000-series, D5000-series, D40, D40X, and D60, where the lens may be used with manual focus only.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Built-in lens hood helps to prevent stray light from causing flare.

    Nikon 135mm f/2.0 reviews

    AF DC-NIKKOR 135mm f/2D Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 113.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Primes are where it's at Personally I dislike zoom lenses. The uneven compression, the lack of fast glass, yes even at 2.8, and the clarity. The 135mm 2.0 is not a soft focus lens. It allows you full control of feel of the photo. Read the manual for specific use of the Defocus control. I use this lens for weddings specifically, because where else can you find a 200mm, 2.0 lens (obviously on a DX crop camera), for less than 4,000 dollars, that's compact, and easy to use. You can't. Diamond in the rough. To be honest? Nothing is wrong with this lens. Auto focus is lighting fast, clarity is unmatched, the feel is incredible, the list goes on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for all types of Portraits! I love this lens! If done right, the background will simply melt away. I've used this lens for birthday parties, head shots and outdoor functions. There is not much of a learning curve for this lens like some have said. Even without the de-focus capability, this lens is worth the money! It is sharp and produces beautiful photos! The only thing that seems odd about this lens is the hood. It's easy to slide forward and tighten into place but when I unscrew it to slide back down, it will sometimes make this grinding noise that will make me cringe! No scratches or damage, just that odd noise.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic portrait lens On digital, the 135mm f/2 makes a great short and fast tele lens. The quality of the images it renders is superb, even wide open. Stop it down a little and it cuts like a knife. The DC feature is only mastered through practice, and is more subtle than many think- it only changes/softens the appearance of the out of focus areas. I still have a long way to go before I fully understand its use. Construction-wise it's a solid mass of metal and glass that oozes pro feel. The manual focus ring in itself is a thing of precision and beauty! The only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that it could use some VR, but that's not a huge deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Portrait Lens I rented this lens over the summer to try at a workshop I was instructing at. All I can say is WOW. Very sharp, great color and contrast. Worked beautifully indoors in a studio setting as well as shooting wide open with available light. Just waiting for the US version to be back in stock to purchase. I was not sure that the defocus controls would be necessary after using the lens wide open but in a studio setting, shooting f8 I was able to blur a backdrop that I would have had to manually edit in photoshop. That is a real timesaver and an unexpected benefit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! To fully realize the capability of this lens requires more than normal directions as it is a Direct Coupled (DC) lens, a design to facilitate increasing boken behind or in front of the focal point. This feature can effectively be disabled by placing one of the len controls in the F16 position. The B&H salesman was careful to explain how and when to place the particular lens control in the F16 position. If you do not the results is not good! I use the lens on Nikon D7100 (as a 200mm lens) and Nikon D750 (as a 135mm lens) cameras, primarily for shooting stage productions during rehearsals and actual performances when the F2 len is most valuable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I read all the reviews both pros and cons. Haven't really had any cons despite the obvious ones that will come natural. It is a heavy lens with no VR and a telephoto range. You will need to be steady, no questions about it. This doesn't mean it's a bad lens just that you're not as a good photographer as you thought. No crutches on this one. I personally wouldn't do too much indoor photography with this one since it's 135mm, so blurriness has not been an issue when shooting outside. At first, the photos looked blurry on the camera, but once they're on the computer they're amazing. I really like the Distortion Control, takes a bit to find out what you like but it's just a matter of personal preference. Don't regret buying it one bit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly sharp, fast, multi-use lens I bought this lens as both a portrait lens - for which it is unbeatable - and a lens to travel with. I prefer a light kit when traveling, usually just something wide, a 35mm lens and then a short telephoto. This is a perfect short telephoto. Since I use a Nikon D800E it easily serves the purpose of a longer telephoto - 270mm - with still enough resolution to get decent prints and more than enough for posting online. The lens is also smaller and lighter than I had thought it would be. The Defocus-image Control is simple to figure out and extremely useful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Black Magic... Nikon's Defocus Lens. I have been a successful professional for over 30 years and the technology that Nikon has built into this lens is truly Black Magic This lens is very easy to use and even at F2 deliver stunning results. If you drop down to F2.8 or F4 the images have an iconic quality. The ability to shift the Boke from rear to front is real creative tool. Professionally this lens will expand creative results in any kind of product, fashion, sports photography. Worth every penny. Works for any film or digital Nikon body.
