Manfrotto MVDDA13 overview

  • 1Description

Control your Nikon or Canon DSLR from the Digital Director for iPad Air from Manfrotto. The Digital Director is an advanced tether solution comprised of three main components: a user-supplied iPad, an Apple Certified Digital Director iPad holder with a built-in microprocessor, and the Digital Director App. These three components work together seamlessly to provide you with control over your camera's still and video functions right from the iPad.

The heart of the Digital Director is the iPad holder which is customized to securely fit the iPad Air and features a lock to prevent accidental release. The iPad slips into the holder and the Lightning connector provides communication between the iPad and the built-in ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz microprocessor, and a USB cable connects the unit to the camera. The processor allows for real-time live view monitoring when shooting stills or videos, as well as fast download speeds when transferring full size JPEGs from the camera's memory card to the iPad.

Digital Director App
  • The intuitive iPad application controls key functions of your Nikon or Canon DSLR camera such as focus point, exposure, aperture and shutter speed.
  • The app provides real-time live view monitoring, manual focus control with focus peaking, and touchscreen point autofocus.
  • Interactive Focus can be used to select the focus point anywhere on the iPad's screen. Digital zoom magnifies the selected focus point to ensure crisp and accurate focus.
  • A toolbar shows histograms, exposure controls, focus controls, color temperature, the shutter button, and audio levels when shooting video. In full-screen mode the floating toolbar can be moved anywhere on the screen, and the individual control can be opened and flicked away to remove on-screen clutter.
  • Image star ratings allow you to sort images, and the app can organize them into albums, shoot profiles, and connection profiles.
  • Download full-size JPEGs to the iPad and adjust the image's exposure, contrast, and light. You can also crop and rotate the image, check the histogram and EXIF data. Once complete, you can share your edited images via FTP, Email, or on social networks directly from your iPad's camera roll.
  • The app allows you to choose between single shot mode or continuous mode using the large shutter button on the iPad screen.
  • A plug-in for Adobe Lightroom is available to help import additional Digital Director metadata from images taken while using the Digital Director.
  • Digital Director iPad Holder
  • The Digital Director consists of a custom-fit frame to fit the iPad Air and an electronic interface with an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz microprocessor. The frame is user-replaceable so that it maintains compatibility with future iPads.
  • A 3/8"-16 female thread allows the holder to attach to a variety of supports, and two notches to match up with Manfrotto's anti-twist mounts.
  • Four cold shoe mounts on the back of the Digital Director are provided for attaching various accessories.
  • The holder is powered by four user-supplied AA batteries or by the included AC adapter, which includes four international adapters: North America, Italy, Germany, and UK.
  • The Digital Director connects to the camera via the USB port and up to a 32.8' USB cable.

    Manfrotto MVDDA13 reviews

Digital Director for iPad Air and Nikon and Canon DSLR Cameras is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Addition for DLSR Video The Digital Director is an awesome accessory for DLSR video taping and still photography ease, using the iPad Air that I own. The ability to control my Canon 5D Mark III directly from the iPad, is a serious plus. I can mount the unit on my tripod or use the 15' tethered USB cable (additional) to control the camera from a distance. I can also see the time code, histogram and audio levels even with my Tascam Dr 70-D XLR audio device connected. Another great feature is the ability to focus (AF lenses only) your DLSR directly from the iPad. You just tap a spot within the focal range and the lens focuses on the point.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great but is a little too pricy I use this to shoot interviews on a weekly basis. Being able to control all of the functions from your iPad is nice. The plastic the Digital Director is made of seems a bit cheap for a $ piece of gear. If you drop it, it probably won't survive the fall. A good case is also needed to protect it when not in use. Manfrotto pictures a case but that case does not come with it and so far I have not been able to find it. There are some decent options out there but a custom built case would be nice. Especially with the $$price tag. The video also seems to lag in live view when the clips get long.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not quite there. I've shot tethered for years using Capture One Pro to a laptop and desktop and although Capture One is great theres a lot to carry and I was looking to lighten the load. After three months of use I find Digital Director to be a little buggy and slow especially with the Canons 5Ds file size. Although other photographers seem to like the plastic case for the price I feel it comes up way short of the rugged expectation I had. Overall the whole product is just not as good as I expected and I can only hope the updates are coming with good workflow improvements. Not much can be done with the light weight plastic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pricey Plactic is near-Perfect We bought this to use as a DSLR monitorfor still portraits. We are volume school portrait photographers. shooting 1,000's of kids weekly. We need reliable, rugged equipment. YES, we could go with a Small HD Monitor for live view, BUT this allows us to use the iPad for other purposes. We own the Cam Ranger and it is an aswsome product! BUT any product communicating with a wireless connection will have a slight lag in performance. So for shooting school portraits, the CamRanger was too slow to respond. The Digital Director is quick to focus and capture. We are very pleased with the performance. We have been purchasing Manfroto products for over 40 years (back to the Lester Bogan days). Manfroto always manufactures solid gear. HOWEVER, this item is made of light-weight plastic. For the price, I excected a more solid build; perhaps aluminimum. The Manfrotto Micro Arm with Anti-Rotation (244) locks into the rear of the frame. We have ordered an APE aclw13548 case from @ ($) for some affordable portection. We would give this 5 stars if it were better construction.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from They are selling the prototype I purchased Digital Director to use with my astro telescope and Canon5DMkII. Trying to use live view with the fixed camera viewfinder while the scope is pointing up at the sky is neck breaking; I planned to use the DD on screen live view to help focus the scope. Turns out there are serious limitations with the DD live view. When I use the magnify function there is only one magnification (about 5X); further the magnified area is the upper left corner of the frame, not the centre and it is not 'moveable'. For manual focus users it should zoom the middle of the frame and be 'moveable'. It fails to provide any time control of bulb exposures - nor does it allow a planned sequence of exposures. When there is a computer (iPad) available it should be easy to implement features like this. Did no one think of an intervalometer? For my particular use it is a bit ordinary so I am looking for a better solution. It does connect to the iPad and camera OK and I have used it with an auto focus lens. In this role it may be more useful - focus control, selection aperture/ shutter etc. I did not explore this much as it not what I want it for. Perhaps a software upgrade will make a decent product of it. There is so much it could do but doesn't. What is presented here is poorly implemented and underdeveloped.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the ideal product I received digital director for mini today, but it is not the ideal product for me. This item is rough process, in particular, the ON/OFF button and Safety lock, design and workmanship are very poor. I used Nikon D800, but no matching USB cable, whether it will increase the cost of many, one more cable. After shooting the video can not be played back on a iPad mini, I do not know if you can upgrade the software improve this feature in the future. So, I do not recommend my friends to buy it now, unless the quality and performance has improved.
