Canon Rebel SL1 Overview

  • 1Description

Combining a pair of zooms with a versatile DSLR, the EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm and 75-300mm Lenses Bundle from Canon includes the sleek camera, two lenses covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives, and a padded gadget bag for holding all of the kit components.

The EOS Rebel SL1 features an 18MP APS-C-sized CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 image processor to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080p recording up to 30 fps. The processor also affords a wealth of performance and speed-related assets, including 4 fps continuous shooting and a sensitivity range of ISO 100-12800, which is further expandable to ISO 25600. A 9-point AF system, which includes a high-precision center cross-type point, ensures fast and accurate focusing or, when working in live view, Hybrid CMOS AF II combines both phase- and contrast-detection focusing methods to assist in continuous focusing and subject tracking. One of the SL1's most notable features is its highly compact size and light weight, measuring just 4.6" wide and weighing only 14.4 oz with battery and memory card installed. Incorporated within the small body, however, is a large 3.0" 1.04m-dot Clear View II touchscreen LCD monitor, which enables an intuitive touch-based means for focus and exposure control as well as playback and menu navigation.

Included with the body is the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28.8-88mm, covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. An Optical Image Stabilizer system helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps and the STM stepping AF motor delivers smooth and near-silent focusing performance. One aspherical element is integrated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations and optimized lens coatings help to reduce lens flare and ghosting while maintaining high image contrast and color neutrality. Extending the combined zoom range even further, the EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 III lens is also included, which offers an equivalent focal length range of 120-480mm. Well-suited to use with distant subjects, this lens utilizes a DC autofocus motor to acquire precise focus while the telephoto perspective is especially useful for visually compressing the space between subjects and producing a shallow depth of field.

Canon Rebel SL1 Reviews

EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm and 75-300mm Lenses Bundle is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 473.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Results I am amazed at the quality of the photos captured by this camera. The color rendition, edge and image acuity, especially with larger prints (8 x 10 for me) have exceeded my expectations, and are superior to anything I have previously enjoyed with either film or digital. I have run side by side tests comparing RAW to JPEG, and can't find any advantage to RAW-in fact the JPEG photos are superior. I suspect that the DIGIC 5 processer is the answer. I have avoided DSLR's until now because of their bulk and weight. However the SL 1 is smaller and lighter than my last Nikon SLR. I have large hands, but have had no problems with gripping the camera as a result.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera I upgraded from a Rebel XTi to this Rebel SL1. I thought the white color might look a little strange, but it's actually pretty sharp. It's definitely lighter in weight than my previous Canon. We use it for both intra-oral and extra-oral patient photography at my office and it takes really good pictures. Very versatile too. We put a ring flash on it for our intra-oral photos and then turn around and use it for smiling portrait photos and it does both flawlessly. The LCD screen is very clear and the coloring is very accurate to what you will see on your computer screen. I would recommend this camera for any dental photography or leisure use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Starter DSLR I've been using a professional level Canon F1 film camera for 35 years and was looking for a lightweight, feature-packed DSLR. I found it in the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 bundled with a Zoom telephoto lens, standard Zoom with Macro feature, and camera bag all included. The camera body with lenses is small and lightweight making it ideal as a travel camera. Built-in flash has been adequate for most situations. Packed with features that are customizable through the software and touch screen view finder. User Manual, software disks and tutorials on the Canon Camera website are very helpful. Intuitive Image Processing software is included in the bundle. I'm very pleased with camera's ease of use and my decision to purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic, compact, light SLR for the money I wanted an updated DSLR to replace an old EOS Rebel and wished to dedicate it to 'Big Bertha' my wife's telephoto zoom, so I didn't want to spend a lot, but i needed a capable camera that would not disappoint. I got the SL1 because it had many features of its bigger brothers yet was inexpensive and very light. Some claim to want a beefier DSLR to 'balance' their heavy lens. After lugging around such a heavy combo, I opted for the opposite approach. Buying the SL1 reminded me of buying my VW Rabbit instead of the GTI. You get most of the desired features, lose some performance, but still get all the fun while saving a lot of cash. This camera will not disappoint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Cute Small DSLR 5/5 I love this camera. Small. Cute. and yet Amazing photos. I've handled at least 2 DSLRs' before (Nikon and T3i). Right before this product came, I saw other deals on camera and I told myself, was this a worth spending money,, and YES it was. what I love is its touch screen. basically wherever you touch, it will automatically focus and take photo. You can also do manual focusing. it gives you great options in every detail.. which means i need to study on its programming. but overall, easy to use even for starters.=) The only drawback I've found so far is short battery life. But I still think this is the greatest smallest dslr ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a great go to camera I have a 5D-III and a 7D which I am very happy with, but I was looking for a carry camera for the just in case situation. I love the wonderful pics this camera takes with any of my Canon Lenses. Normally I use the 40mm pancake lens because of its size and the pictures are incredible. The small size does not bother me. That's why I bot it. I prefer it to my G12 which I gave to my Granddaughter. Obviously, we all have specific requirements, but if you want a small DSLR and use any of your Canon lenses and get fantastic pictures, don't do anything until you tried this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT Camera When I received our new SL1 I was first amazed at the size of the camera, after reading the instructions and taking some practice shots, I was again AMAZED at the performance. I had a 12 yr old Rebel and a 18-200m Tamron lens, now I have the SL1 and a new Tamron 18-27, what a wonderful performing and pair up of equipment. The camera is rated as a low end, entry level camera, let me tell you that after reading the reviews on this camera, especially those from professional photographers, I agree with their comments, you don't need a high end camera if this little entry level camera performs in such an exceptional manner. TRY ONE, you will definitely buy one!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The White SL1 is Happiness I own a 5D Mark III and of course love that camera but the weight makes it hard to carry back and forth to work everyday. I have been finding that I have been talking less images and really wanted to get back to photography. I looked at the mirrorless cameras and was about to buy one when this little WHITE camera popped up during my research. This camera is so light and FUN. It has (most) of the same dials, etc as the 5DMIII plus touch screen capabilities. The images (with the 18-55 STM and the 55-250 STM) are great. In most cases I do not see much difference between this and the 5DMIII. People stop me to ask what white camera I have. Fun to use and great images - plus very light weight. Can't ask for more.

In the AV setting, what is the lowest aperture setting available? thank you.
Asked by: Anonymous
With variable aperture lenses such as the Canon 18-55 3.5-5.6 zoom , the minimum or smallest aperture that can be used depends on the focal length you are using. In the wide angle setting the smallest aperture that can be used is f22. When zoomed to 55mm , the smallest aperture that can be selected in Av mode is f32.

I currently have a Digital Rebel XSi. Do you see a significant advantage in investing in a Rebel SL1, a T3i or a T5i? Between those 3 models which prices are in the same range, which one would you say is the best choice today?
Asked by: Anonymous
While these three cameras are all relatively similar, there are slight variances between the SL1, T3i and T5i. The SL1 is more compact and lightweight than the T3i and T5i. The SL1 and T5i will give you a higher ISO sensitivity range, up to 12800, compared to the maximum ISO of 6400 on the T3i. You will get the fastest burst rate with the T5i, with up to five frames per second, followed by the SL1 at four frames per second, and the T3i with 3.7 frames per second. The T5i and SL1 also feature HDMI connectivity, whereas the T3i does not. The SL1 and T5i also feature STM focusing with select STM series lenses, which provides for very smooth autofocus, which is helpful when shooting video.

Will the lenses from my Canon 60D fit on this camera?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes they will. The Canon 60D and Rebel SL1 are both compatible with any autofocus lenses made by Canon or for the EOS system by other manufacturers.

When shooting video does continuous auto focus work with non STM Canon lens? If so how well does it work?
Asked by: Bill
You can but not having a stepping motor will make the transitions from out of focus to focus more jarring, making for potentially unusable video in certain scenarios.

what is the diff between EF and EF-s lenses? How important is STM on a lense for this camera?
Asked by: Anonymous
EF lenses are full-frame lenses designed by Canon that are compatible on all Canon EOS 35mm SLR and DSLR cameras alike, manufactured since 1987. All Canon EOS cameras have a red dot on the lens mount and can accommodate an EF lens. Canon EF-S lenses are designed for Canon DSLR cameras that use the smaller APS-C 1.6x cropped sensor cameras. Canon EF-S lenses have a white square on the lens mount, and only attach to the smaller sensor Canon cameras with a white square on the lens mount. STM lenses use Canon's new Stepping Motor designed for smooth, quiet and fast focusing during video recording when using a camera compatible with Movie AF. Video capture is the only time you may notice a difference between STM and non-STM lenses, so if you are using continuous autofocus with the Canon SL1, then an STM lens would be beneficial.
