Sennheiser ME2 SET Overview

The ultra-compact Sennheiser AVX-ME2 SET provides professional videographers, video journalists, and vloggers with a dependable wireless microphone system that's so easy to use, it's like having a dedicated sound engineer on set handling audio tasks.

Made with simplicity in mind, but without compromising audio quality, this self-configuring digital system handles time-consuming frequency setup and mic-level adjustments for you, so you're ready to shoot within seconds. Now, you can focus on the other critical elements vying for your attention during a shoot, and confidently record crisp, clear audio on your camcorder, DSLR, or mirrorless camera.

In addition to a bodypack transmitter and camera-mount receiver, this set comes with a black ME 2-II omnidirectional lavalier mic, ideal for projects ranging from wedding and corporate videos to documentaries and hands-free interviews.

It Goes Where You Go
  • The lightweight AVX system is easy to carry with you when every ounce counts. The roadworthy bodypack transmitter features a rugged metal chassis with a form factor even smaller than the ew G4. Its locking connector ensures that your lav doesn’t detach at a critical moment, while a convenient switch allows you to mute your mic. The display shows battery life and signal strength.
  • The discreet receiver plugs directly into the XLR input of your camcorder and rotates 320° to get out of the way of lights or other accessories you may have mounted on your camera. An AF button on the receiver allows you to adjust the output level to your camera, if necessary. In addition, the receiver comes with a shoe mount and 3.5mm output cable, making it a great fit for DSLR and mirrorless shooters.
Setup Made Simple
Automatically Finds a Clean Channel
  • The digital AVX automatically finds the cleanest frequency in the 1.9 GHz band as soon as you power up the receiver.
Fast Pairing
  • A long press of the Pair button on both receiver and transmitter links the two devices. Once the indicator LED turns green, you’re good to go.
(Note that the AVX is a peer-to-peer system, meaning the transmitter can only be paired with one receiver.)
Clear and Natural Speech
  • The ever-popular ME 2-II omnidirectional lavalier microphone delivers a natural sound optimized for speech intelligibility. Its omnidirectional polar pattern ensures that the sound remains consistent, even when the speaker's head moves away from the mic.
  • The AVX's automatic mic-level control takes full advantage of the system's wide dynamic range to deliver consistent speech without clipping and distortion, even when your talent goes from a whisper to a shout.
  • The system delivers 24-bit/48 kHz audio with an extended 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, for pristine, nuanced recordings.
Protected Wireless Transmission
  • The AVX operates in the license-free 1.9 GHz band—away from TV and Wi-Fi interference—to create a wireless peer-to-peer connection, for clean audio without dropouts at a range up to 98’.
  • The system automatically finds the cleanest frequency, free from RF interference.
  • If interference is detected, the AVX automatically increases the power on the transmitter—up to 250 mW—to overcome the problem.
  • If the increase in power isn’t sufficient, the system substitutes a clear frequency well before the audio signal itself is affected, for clean, worry-free sound.
Power Management
  • The AVX receiver features a removable, lithium-ion battery that is recharged via the USB port.
  • The transmitter includes a BA 30 battery pack that will power it for up to 15 hours.
  • The receiver turns itself on and off when it senses phantom power from your camcorder, extending battery life in the field.
  • The  receiver can also be powered through its USB port, allowing it to run for numerous hours on a USB power pack or indefinitely, if you have access to AC.
  • The BA 20 battery for the receiver is also available separately, so you can have a fully charged spare battery ready in the field.
Other Features
  • Up to eight AVX systems can operate simultaneously in the same area
  • AES 256-bit encryption for secure communication
  • Made in Germany

How can you tell the battery life of the receiver?
Asked by: Adam
On page 7 of the manual, it states: "When the On/Off/Check button has been pressed, the LED display lights up green to indicate the remaining battery life of the receiver‘s BA 20 accupack (see page 24); when the AF Out button has been pressed, the LED display lights up red to indicate the audio output level (see page 27). When the right LED flashes red, the capacity of the receiver‘s BA 20 accupack is only sufficient for a maximum of 15 minutes of operation." https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/375153.pdf

Can the receiver be powered/charged via a Dtap source? (DC 11.9-17v, Unregulated). With a Dtap to Microusb cable?
Asked by: Huay-Bing
A D-tap battery would have too much voltage and would damage the AVX receiver. I would recommend using an external power bank, such as the mophie 22,000mAh powerstation AC Portable Battery Pack (Black), BH #MO4167.

can you use a hand held mic with the AVX- ME2 if so what adapter would you need?
Asked by: darin
You can purchase the Sennheiser SKM AVX-835S Digital Handheld Microphone Transmitter (B&H # SESKMAVX8354) to use with the AVX EKP Camera-Mount Digital Plug-In Receiver that is included in the AVX-ME2 SET Digital Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System. However, only one transmitter can be used at a time with the AVX EKP receiver. Sennheiser does not offer a dual-channel wireless camera-mountable receiver. There is an AVX combo set available that includes the bodypack transmitter and lavalier mic together packaged together with the handheld transmitter, which is the Sennheiser AVX-Combo SET Digital Camera-Mount Wireless Microphone System (B&H # SEAVXHLS).This system is intended to give you the option of using either transmitter with the receiver, but not both together simultaneously.

question

Could I use these for PA (public address) purposes? Will the delay 19millesecond affect what the audience hears from the room speakers?
Asked by: NEAL
Sound travels at 1.1 ft/millisecond. So the 19 milliseconds is the same as the echo time from a wall 9 ft away from you. The AVX is using that time to look for the best connection frequencies automatically. The only problem I can imagine for live sound is if you have a singer and a backup orchestra, you don't want the singer to feel late. You could remedy that by a 19ms in the amplification of the orchestra, with respect to what is fed in the ear of the singer. Recorded video can be adjusted in post production, but for most application that is not necessary, since 19ms is consistent with the room reverb from a normal sized room. I use the AVX with MKE2 for recording my class lectures, it feels and works solid like a tank, the quality is excellent, and it requires only a student to remind me to put my mic and turn it on... You may get down to 5ms delay with a system in the range of $5k - $10k, with a big receiver which is manned. You can plug into the AVX directional face mics from Sennheiser, Countryman or DPA, making sure that you get them with the AVX plug, or use an AVX cardioid handheld mic, if ambient noise or amplification is a problem. The sound from a directional mic is a bit drier than from an omni mic.
