It Goes Where You Go

  • The lightweight AVX system is easy to carry with you when every ounce counts. The roadworthy bodypack transmitter features a rugged metal chassis with a form factor even smaller than the ew G4. Its locking connector ensures that your lav doesn’t detach at a critical moment, while a convenient switch allows you to mute your mic. The display shows battery life and signal strength.
  • The discreet receiver plugs directly into the XLR input of your camcorder and rotates 320° to get out of the way of lights or other accessories you may have mounted on your camera. An AF button on the receiver allows you to adjust the output level to your camera, if necessary. Can the receiver be powered/charged via a Dtap source? (DC 11.9-17v, Unregulated). With a Dtap to Microusb cable?

A D-tap battery would have too much voltage and would damage the AVX receiver. I would recommend using an external power bank, such as the mophie 22,000mAh powerstation AC Portable Battery Pack (Black), BH #MO4167.

Could I use these for PA (public address) purposes? Will the delay 19millesecond affect what the audience hears from the room speakers?

Sound travels at 1.1 ft/millisecond. So the 19 milliseconds is the same as the echo time from a wall 9 ft away from you. The AVX is using that time to look for the best connection frequencies automatically. The only problem I can imagine for live sound is if you have a singer and a backup orchestra, you don't want the singer to feel late. You could remedy that by a 19ms in the amplification of the orchestra, with respect to what is fed in the ear of the singer. Recorded video can be adjusted in post production, but for most application that is not necessary, since 19ms is consistent with the room reverb from a normal sized room. I use the AVX with MKE2 for recording my class lectures, it feels and works solid like a tank, the quality is excellent, and it requires only a student to remind me to put my mic and turn it on... You may get down to 5ms delay with a system in the range of $5k - $10k, with a big receiver which is manned. You can plug into the AVX directional face mics from Sennheiser, Countryman or DPA, making sure that you get them with the AVX plug, or use an AVX cardioid handheld mic, if ambient noise or amplification is a problem. The sound from a directional mic is a bit drier than from an omni mic.

Newbie question... I see that this system uses a 24 bit resolution. If I used the AVX system with the Zoom F6, with this allow for 32 bit float recording?

I used it with a Zoom F6, which has precisely the XLR inputs which match the AVS receiver. You need to choose one of the 4 inputs carefully, and you will have no hum.

The Sennheiser AVX wireless system is what as known as a Diversity system. The system functions on channel 8 between 1920 to 1930 MHz. The AVX is constantly looking for the cleanest frequency to transmit on. This is what a diversity system does. There is no need for you to touch any frequency the system will do it for you. The AVX was designed for you basic run and gun shooter.

What is the size of the XLR connection on the ...

What is the size of the XLR connection on the receiver? Will it work with the Zoom H6 with 1/4" XLR connections?

It's a standard 3-pin male XLR connector. I looked the Zoom H6 up on B&H's site to confirm the input connectors are what they sound like based on your question, and confirmed they are hybrid connectors that accept male XLR connectors or 1/4" (I assume (T)ip(R)ing(S)hield) connectors. The only possible drawback is the receiver is integrated with the XLR connector, and if an application doesn't have room for the receiver to be that close to the connector, you may have to use an XLR cord between the two. This is NOT the case with the H6, though. There would be no conflict between the receiver and the H6. Also, the receiver's XLR connector rotates, so the receiver can be positioned out of the way of the other H6 input connector as well. Really like the Sennheiser AVX set. We've had it for 2.5 years. Works great. Had to replace the transmitter battery pack once due to the user breaking the charger port in it. Also bought a "battery sled" (Sennheiser B30, holds two AA batts, powers the transmitter in place of the BA30 battery pack) for emergency power in case user forgets to charge battery - or it malfunctions), and a short USB-C to USB adapter cable to power (or charge) the receiver from our camera battery (has a USB power port on it), also in case of receiver battery failure or user failure to recharge it. Just bought this and tried it out once. I'm not a professional videographer and have to create short videos for work. It seemed simple to set up but when I went to edit the video the sound is incredibly distorted. It sounds like it's playing through a blown out speaker. I've tried playing it on multiple devices so I know it is not my computer. Did I somehow set it up incorrectly? Very confused. Thanks

You may need to make adjustments to the settings for the receiver's output level or the camera's input level. If your camera has an automatic level control, you will need to deactivate it. The receiver also has an automatic level control which can't be deactivated, so you don't want the camera and receiver to interfere with each other as they are making their adjustments. You may also want to check the setting for the camera's input sensitivity level and lower it, if needed. You can check the output level display on the camera while using the mic. You should see the level peak when the mic is picking up louder audio, but it should not be clipping. If necessary, you can adjust the receiver's output level using the AF Out button on the receiver.
