Video Devices PIX-E7 Overview

Compact and powerful, the Video Devices PIX-E7 7" 4K Recording Video Monitor can record 4K video over HDMI and 6G-SDI to SpeedDrive SSDs. Not only is the PIX-E7 a powerful recorder, it also has a built-in 7" 1920 x 1200 resolution touchscreen for monitoring framing, checking focus, and displaying scopes. Video Devices designed the PIX-E series of recorders to be compact so you can use them with small cameras and camcorders without weighing them down excessively.

Firmware update v3.00 also adds the capability to simultaneously record an edit-ready 4K ProRes file (MOV) to the SpeedDrive and 1080p H.264 file (MP4) to an SD card. This is useful for dailies and other applications. If you have a LUT active during simultaneous recording, it will be baked into the H.264 file only and will not affect the ProRes recording. This allows you to record a ProRes master file for editing and Rec.709 H.264 file for client viewing. 4K to 1080p downscaling happens automatically during simultaneous 4K/1080p recording. The update also enables H.264 recording with a timecode stamp to the SpeedDrive and/or SD card.

As a subsidiary of Sound Devices, Video Devices implemented a few pro-audio features as well. Aside from being able to record audio from the digital video connections, the PIX-E7 has analog audio inputs in the form of 3.5mm jacks. To expand the pro-audio capabilities of the PIX-E7, a separately available XLR audio mixer with meters can screw into the bottom 1/4"-20 tapped hole.

PIX-E7 Features
Video Recording
The PIX-E7 can record resolutions up to DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) from HDMI or SDI sources in the Apple ProRes format in up to 4444 XQ. DCI 4K and UHD 4K formats can be recorded at frame rates up to 30 fps and HD footage can be recorded at up to 120p for slow motion or projects requiring higher frame rates. All inputs have a loop-through output which can go to a client or director's monitor.
Simultaneous 4K ProRes & 1080p H.264 Recording
Firmware update v3.00 adds the ability to simultaneously record a 4K ProRes file and 1080p H.264 file for dailies and other applications. Any active LUT gets baked into the H.264 file but not the ProRes recording, allowing you to have a ProRes master file for editing and Rec.709 H.264 file for client presentation. The new update also enables H.264 recording with a timecode stamp to the SpeedDrive and/or SD card.
High-Resolution LCD Touchscreen and Controls
With a bright 1920 x 1200 resolution touchscreen IPS LCD, the PIX-E7 can display scopes clearly, as well as perform precise punch-ins for focus confirmation. The capacitive touchscreen can be used to navigate menus as well as direct the focus punch-in area. Even though the large touchscreen is convenient, Video Devices has also implemented their intuitive, classic rotary encoder menu navigation style found on the PIX-240i as well as their classic tactile dome-shaped buttons so you can change your settings without putting fingerprints on the screen. For durability, the glass on top of the LCD panel is Gorilla Glass 2 which is scratch and shatter resistant.
SpeedDrive Media
The PIX-E records to affordable and fast SpeedDrives. SpeedDrives are based on industry standard mSATA drives contained within a custom-designed USB 3.0 enclosure. The SpeedDrive, which plugs directly into the PIX-E, can double as a standard USB 3.0 thumb drive for high speed offload to any computer without the need for a special cable or drive docking station. SpeedDrives can be bought stand-alone or as an enclosure to hold a 3rd party mSATA drive for more capacity options.
Powering
The PIX-E7 can operate off external 10 to 34 VDC or with readily available Sony L-mount batteries. If you switch power sources during operation, the PIX-E7 will seamlessly switch without causing a shutdown.

Recording Media . . . I am left a bit unsure as to what people are using. It would appear you need to buy enclosures and also SSDs. What are people using that have proven reliable? I would think 500gig SSDs or 1TBs would be what I would want, but do they work with this unit?

There's only one choice approved by VideoDevices: Samsung MSATA drives, available in 250G, 500G and 1TB. https://www.videodevices.com/products/portable-video-recorders/pix-e5/approved-media Currently over one hundred dollars less expensive to buy the USB enclosure and drive from B&H and assemble it yourself, or to get a larger 500GB or 1TB drive.

question

Can this device record a 4K 10bit 422 stream from a Pan GH4 in ProRes 12bit 444?
Asked by: Nathan
It will only be able to record the signal it is given. There is no device that will allow you to take a camera that outputs 10-Bit 422 and record it at 12-Bit 444. You will be able to use it with the GH4, it just will not be able to record 12-Bit 444.

question

I just checked Video Devices website and they make now mention of Fuji compatibility. Has anyone tried this with either their X-T2 or new X-H1?
Asked by: Alden
I use it with an xt2... works great, just be aware there's a glitch if your xt2's evf is set to eye sensor and you trigger it back and forth from the evf to the lcd. For some reason the hdmi out will lose a half second of footage when it transitions. This is on fuji's end as far as I can tell. When they updated firmware to allow the eye sensor switch during video recording, they made this little problem. ... otherwise, you'll get a nice 8bit pro res 422 f-log or with film simulations.

question

Has anyone used the PIX-E7 successfully with a Nikon D800 DSLR?
Asked by: Bruce B.
The Nikon D800 does have a clean HDMI output which you can use to connect it to recording devices like this. However you will only be able to record HD with the D800 and this monitor.

question

I am buying a sony fs5, and want to buy a external recorder at the same time. Fs5 outputs through sdi. It is very confusing that does PI E7 takes signal up to 4K from fs5? Pix e does 4444 12bit so I am very much interested in it. But not sure does it reads from FS5? Will be great if answer is very simple for a laymen.
Asked by: Santu
I don't own an FS5, but from what I know, HDMI output on the FS5 is 8bit in both HD and 4K. SDI signal outputs 1080p at 10bit 422 - and with a PAID firmware upgrade, it will support RAW output. PIX7 supports SDI input, and that would be the better choice as it is the only way to record beyond 10bit externally with the FS5. You're correct that you are limited to what the camera can output, so I'd say consult with someone who might know more about the camera if this upgrade and monitor is for you. If FS5 can output raw from the upgrade, I'm pretty sure it can record to max color space settings on the Pix7. Here's the B&H firmware upgrade link that you might be interested in: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1258368-REG/sony_cbkz_fs5rif_pxw_fs5_fs_raw_output.htmlI'm not 100% confident with this, so I'd confirm with someone who has much better knowledge on the camera before you make the leap.

question

Is anyone using this with a Panasonic AG-DVX200 4k Camcorder for DCI 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 output (Pro Res)?
Asked by: Anonymous
This recorder is designed to do what you wish to do. Given the manufacturer's superb reputation, and the rave reviews these recorder/monitors are getting, you will have only a good experience with it.
