Blackmagic Design SWRCONVRCKT4K8 overview

  • 1Description

With 12G-SDI, Blackmagic Design's ATEM Talkback Converter 4K accepts high-resolution video from up to eight studio cameras or ATEM Camera Converters and allows the control room to interact with the camera operators. The 12G-SDI connections can support video with resolutions up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 fps and rout those individual signals to a switcher via SDI outputs, to a program monitor via its own SDI output, and back to the camera operator while carrying talkback audio over a single cable. Talkback audio can be captured via a microphone plugged into the XLR jack on the front, or a headset mic plugged into the appropriate jack, also on the front panel.

This unit can be upgraded to accept fiber optic connections, which carry, bi-directional 4K video, audio, and talkback for up to 28 miles without signal degradation. And because of its 1 RU size, it can easily fit into industry standard rack-mount equipment and furniture.

Optional Optical Fiber Connectors
The ATEM Talkback Converter 4K can be upgraded to use standard single mode optical fiber cable with standard LC connectors to allow you to transmit SD and HD video signals up to 28 miles away. Standard copper wire SDI cables have a limit of several hundred feet before the signal breaks up, converting the SDI signal to optical, and sending it along optical cable greatly increases the distance of your cable runs.
Talkback and Tally
The unit features a built-in speaker and mic inputs, as well as a headphone jack for when you need privacy, or the area is too loud. When connected to the ATEM Camera Converter without needing to worry about walkie talkies. Using the talkback feature, the unit uses audio channels 15 and 16 of the SDI stream for talkback communication.
Camera operators can be selected individually if desired, and communication can be controlled by a push button, or locked open. Mute and un-mute buttons on the front of the unit allow you to control who hears what.
The unit passes SDI Tally signal information back to the cameras along with any SDI Program signal from available switchers.
Precision Signal Processing
The unit features chips that use 10-bit processing, and are switchable between SD and HD, for a clean signal.
The unit features eight independent simultaneous SDI to optical and optical to SDI converters (with the optional fiber terminals), when used in conjunction with the ATEM Camera Converter the unit can also be used as four independent SDI or Fiber to HDMI converters.

    Blackmagic Design SWRCONVRCKT4K8 reviews

ATEM Talkback Converter 4K is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good solution We've had this thing a week now. Overall its a good solution. It was less than clear to us when we bought it that you *have* to use LC fiber cables. You cannot use SDI cables instead of fiber and get the talkback and tally to work. Perhaps this was apparent to others but wasnt to us. We already had tons of SDI and didn't initially need the ultra long run cabilities that fiber provide so we had planned to use SDI to begin with. No go. The other frustrating thing was, this unit does not come with the Blackmagic SFP adapter modules which you have to have to connect your LC fiber cables to it. No where did it specify this. So keep in mind that you must purchase those individually (one for each camera) in order to connect your fiber. Ironically, the Camera Converter units come with these whereas this unit includes none. Stupid if you ask me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does not ship with SFPs. You need to buy 8 @ $ each! Testing this now. We bought 2 and were a little surprised when they arrivied without the SFPs! Fortunately we had a couple BlackMagic 6G Mini-Convertors. We were able to pull the SFP out of one and put it into the back of the 4K Talkback Converter. And it worked (as it should). In order to use this thing as advertised, you'll need to buy the SFPs seperately: are $ each and 8 will run an additional $. Looking back at the description it does read that adding fiber I/Os is 'optional'. But still....I dont even think 12G SFPs are available yet. So this thing is definitely on the bleeding edge. But I can't complain too much. We are only testing with different cameras at this point (4K, Latency, etc). But once we decide to pull the trigger, we'll have to order the SFPs. Or wait until NAB when BlackMagic announces some new 4K camera fiber convertor (with a release date scheduled for next year!)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from clarifications on other reviews, shortcomings Used for a ATEM 4 M/E setup with 6 Ursa Mini Pros, for over a year in a studio. You don't have to use the fiber option to get tally and talkback. All the setup's UMP cameras are connected (x2 sdi each) via 12G capable SDI and have talkback comms, tally, ATEM software camera control, etc. I've also tried the BMD micro studio and that works as well over just SDI. Note that you cannot however use both (IE, SDI to a static camera, fiber to a converter unit for extra comms to somone) -- the unit will boot and pick one of the two connectors. Unit indeed does NOT come with any of the BMD specific SFPs which is bizarre and silly for the price tag. So you can't use fiber at all until you also buy these. The pilot headset situation is ridiculous, they need to just replace it with standard broadcast 5 pin xlr. Their other smaller converter boxes take a different size of headset connectors, and their cameras take iphone headsets; it all makes little sense and is not cohesive or standardized in any way. How Program audio works on this unit is totally useless, it auto ducks down whenever it detects audio in the mic. So we've had to disable program altogether (for cameras too) and pipe in our own feed via a Camera Converter unit. How is there no setting to change this? They also need to make a stripped down version of this (with 5 pin xlr) for stations that are not cameras. Graphics, Audio, Engineering, etc.. even just TD and Director, for example. The practicality of BMD comms is not thought through yet it's so convenient that comms are built into the camera run without any extra cables. Here's hoping version 2 is around the corner soon.
