Blackmagic Design Teranex Mini Overview

Supporting up to 12G-SDI data rates with intelligent heat dissipation, and offering features such as XLR connections and an Ethernet control and PoE port, the Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 12G Converter, from Blackmagic Design, is a highly improved solution for rack-mount as well as cable duct and desktop installations. Connect up to a Full 4K DCI 4096x2160p SDI signal and run it out to an HDMI display in the same DCI 4K resolution, and monitor the signal locally via an SDI loopout. You can also de-embed audio from the signal and route it separately via full-size XLR connectors that are switchable between balanced analog and AES/EBU digital audio.

The compact size of the Teranex Mini makes it very useful for portable racks at live events or in broadcast trucks. Up to three units can easily be installed in an optional 1U 19" rack tray, and they can just as easily be removed, and all this with the advantage of 12G-SDI capability. The Ethernet port on the rear will allow you to manage the Teranex Mini remotely or can alternatively be used for power over Ethernet. If you don't want to use power over Ethernet, you won't have to deal with cumbersome power supplies, as the Teranex Mini features a built-in 90-240V power supply, and all you'll need is a standard IEC power cable, sold separately.

A major benefit of the Teranex Mini is that the standard front panel can be replaced with an optional Smart Panel that features a spin knob, color LCD, and six control buttons, including a menu button. The substantially large LCD will show you the video conversion in progress and will also let you monitor audio levels as well as verify timecode and the video standard being converted. The standard front panel simply comes off and the Smart Panel easily attaches in its place. When you're using the standard front panel, you'll have access to an array of mini switches that will let you change settings instantly in correspondence with a diagram printed on the converter. If you swap in the optional Smart Panel, you'll instead be able to use simple on-screen menus as well as see exactly what you're converting. If you're in a larger facility using numerous converters, you can manage all of them over Ethernet from a Mac or Windows computer using the included Converter Utility software.

What enables the Teranex Mini to dissipate heat so effectively and prevent overheating is a smart thermal design with crossflow cooling that achieves the optimal heat dissipation even when you have units rack-mounted side-by-side one another. An intelligent thermal subsystem and internal heat pipe assist with cooling and keep the air flowing at all times while minimizing noise. Moreover, if the Teranex Mini gets too hot, you'll instantly receive a notification through the remote control Ethernet utility and on the front panel. When multiple units are rack-mounted side by side, each Teranex Mini works together to pull air through the rack keeping all units cool and providing redundancy for each one.

The Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 12G Converter is built using high-quality Teranex video processing technology and is ideal for all broadcast, post production, and other professional video applications.

Blackmagic Design Teranex Mini Reviews

Distorted Audio With 4K Dual Link Signal

The unit was purchased to use on a Linux-based Flame workstation. We get clean audio playing back single link HD, but when playing 4K dual link, the audio is distorted. Opened a ticked with Blackmagic in Jan. 2022. After back and forth communications (FYI, they are very slow responding) it turns out they can't test the unit in their lab on a Linux-based system; just Windows and Mac. So, they could not replicate to issue to resolve it but they did say this on Jan. 19, 2022: Unexpected behavior of Teranex SDI to Audio 12G confirmed with Teranex Express dual link out. I have reported about about this. I would not expect that it should be a big difference when DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G dual link out will be used as source. However, I can make one more tests on next week in our lab. I reach you out with result of tests. Ruslan J Support Representative Blackmagic Design Inc. Did not hear back from them until May 3, when I asked how I could return the unit as it still does not work and have found an Aja converter that does work. They sent a link for a firmware update (which didn't change anything), responded they don't take back products and closed the case. If your workflow is Linux-based, this unit may not give you clean audio.

Very good. Easy setup. We use it for graphics for a DVI / HDMI monitor.

DOES NOT WORK AS ADVERTISED WITH APPLE XDR DISPLAY

By brett

Everything works perfectly with this Teranex except the advertised calibration capability with the Apple XDR Display. After discussing with Blackmagic support they confirmed this IS NOT capable of calibrating the XDR display. This feature is advertised all over BM websites and any documentation for the Teranex.  When connected to the display the Begin Color Calibration is entirely greyed out and is unable to be used. Apparently this is due to Apple's control of the calibration for the monitor, I can't see any way to make the built in calibration work and BM support confirmed this. Very deceptive marketing for BM as its very specifically listed as a calibration solution for the XDR display. Apparently this DisplayPort output can be calibrated using the Teranex for literally every other monitor than the XDR...

Gets the Job Done (Most of the Time)

So, the primary reason I got this unit was to archive old SD tape material to file by using the Blackmagic Hyper Deck Studio Mini. This unit did very well as long as the sync signal from the tape deck was stable. If, however, the sync signal was poor, the unit would get confused and switch between PAL and NTSC quickly thereby rendering the ability to record the signal impossible. Barring that, as long as the source was stable, the unit did very well. I liked the option to make minor adjustments to the audio as well as the video signal to adapt to various analog tape sources. The only recommendation I would pass on to the manufacturer would be to allow the user to manually select PAL or NTSC rather than automatically sensing the signal. The unit build is very solid. I would highly recommend that the optional front monitor panel be used as this allows the user to make signal setting adjustments without the need for a computer. Therefore, I would recommend this unit for those that wish to archive older SD taped material.

Needs XLR outputs

I realize they can only put so much in a small 1/3 RU box but there needs to be another version of this where the audio is dis-embedded with XLR output. The alternative is the bi-directional Roland Unit which I've started accumulating because it's more versatile.

My review is less than a star because I've purchased two and no video output on any of the outputs, the second one did not even power up
