question

Does this work like a tascam?
Asked by: Enrique
No. This is basically an XLR interface box. The microphones are recorded as audio tracks along with the video on the PixE. It does not do any actual recording itself. You can record the two audio tracks from this as well as still recording audio tracks from the camera via HDMI at the same time in the PixE.

question

I'm know this must be run through the Pix-E monitors, but can you record the audio only while using the monitor to audio. Say you want to record the video internally in your camera and use the Pix-E5 to monitor only, can you still record the high quality audio to the Speed-drive separately?
Asked by: Ryan
You must have a video signal run to the Pix-E5 to be able to record anything. I have talked to Sound Devices about updating firmware so that you can just run audio in and record that with black video. He agreed that would be a good idea. Not sure if that's what you are asking. If you have both a/v connected I don't think there is a way to only record the audio. It only creates video files.

How is the device powered?

question

How does this connect to the PIX-e5 monitors? I video from NAB shows it has some kind of proprietary socket, but no picture of the monitor I've found has anything like that on the bottom. Basically, I want to know if it can be used as a stand-alone interface.
Asked by: Leo M.
On my PIX-E5 I have a socket covered over by a plastic cover. In the user manual it says, This removable cover is attached with adhesive to the monitors bottom panel and protects the connection used for integration with the optional PIX-LR accessory. It looks like the audio recorder will be proprietary to the monitor.
