Samyang 100mm f/2.8 Macro Overview

Affording you a life-size 1:1 magnification and a minimum focusing distance of 1', the Sony E mount 100mm f/2.8 ED UMC Macro Lens from Samyang is a manual focus short telephoto designed for working with subjects both near and far. The optical design incorporates one high refractive index element and one extra-low dispersion element to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the focusing range, and an Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to minimize flare and ghosting for increase contrast and color neutrality. A long focal length lens with close focusing abilities and a high magnification ratio, this macro lens is ideal for making close-up, detailed images of nearby subjects.

This 100mm f/2.8 lens features a Sony E mount, and is compatible with full-frame sensors or APS-C sensors, where it will provide a 150mm equivalent focal length.
A bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is useful for working in a variety of lighting conditions and the minimum f/32 aperture helps to attain a long depth of field when working with close-up subjects.
One high refractive index element and one extra-low dispersion element help to control chromatic aberrations and minimize distortions throughout the focusing and aperture ranges.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
Featuring a macro design, this lens affords a 1:1 maximum magnification ratio along with a minimum focusing distance of 1'.
Benefitting working with especially close subjects, this manual focus lens features an internal focus design to maintain the overall lens length during use. Additionally, the front filter mount does not rotate when focusing to better enable the use of polarizers, graduated ND, and other filter types that require precise positioning.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.

Samyang 100mm f/2.8 Macro Reviews

Good Macro and Portrait Lens

Used the lens to do macro photography of flowers and a few insects. Manual focus ring operates smoothly. The lens has good close focus range. The lens stops down to f/32 and opens wide to f/2.8. It is well balanced and not very heavy. I have also used for portraits with good results also. Good lens for the money.

Great Image Quality, Gargantuan for a6000

IQ is fantastic. Images are sharp and crispy with plenty of contrast and color. Build quality is great. All mechanical parts have a good quality feel - focus ring is smooth and has the right amount of resistance and the aperture ring clicks nicely. With practice, manual focus is easy especially with peaking and focus magnification or other electronic aids. The only reason I don't give it 5/5 stars is because it's huge. It would definitely be more comfortable on a DSLR than the a6000 but it isn't too unwieldy. For me, the image quality and value makes up for the compromise of compactness. If a tripod collar was included it would be even better.

Not easy to use with Sony FE cameras

You have to make changes to the camera settings in the menu so that exposure will occur without a lens attached. I felt that this is awkward and you have to remember to reset it for use with other lenses. I returned the lens.

Used the lens to do macro photography of flowers and a few insects. Manual focus ring operates smoothly. Lens can be stopped down to f/32 or wide open to f/2.8. Lens is well balanced and not very heavy. I have also used the lens for a few portraits in natural light and at widest open setting, blurred the back ground sufficiently as it should. Good lens for the money.

Awesome lens

I purchased this lens for my Sony A7 as I wanted a good macro lens. This lens is sharp and works well with the A7. Put the camera in aperture mode and set the ISO to what you want (do not use auto ISO) and the camera will get the correct exposure. I will also recommend a ring-light with a constant light setting for macro work.

Is this lens comptable with Sony A7RII?
Asked by: Georges
Yes, the Samyang 100mm f/2.8 ED UMC Macro Lens for Sony E is compatible with the Sony A7RII. The lens will connect to the camera, and one can manually focus. Because their is no electronic communication, between the lens and the camera, changing f stops is manual as well. To be able to trip the shutter one must set the camera to the w/o lens setting.
