Pairing the tested Distagon concept with contemporary functionality, the ZEISS Batis 25mm f/2 is a wide-angle prime designed specifically for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Its broad field of view makes it well-suited to landscape, reportage, and architecture photography applications and the bright f/2 maximum aperture is ideal for shooting in low-light conditions. The optical design uses a series of aspherical and anomalous partial dispersion elements to greatly reduce color fringing, distortion, and other aberrations to realize sharp, clear, and color-accurate imagery. A floating elements system is also employed for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, and an enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for working in difficult lighting conditions.

ZEISS Batis 25mm f/2 Overview

Pairing the tested Distagon concept with contemporary functionality, the ZEISS Batis 25mm f/2 is a wide-angle prime designed specifically for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Batis-series lenses are distinguished by their innovative use of an OLED display on the lens barrel, which highlights the focus distance and depth of field range for quickly recognizing your focusing parameters. As an autofocus lens, linear motors are used to deliver quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, the lens body also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to permit its use in trying environments.

Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 37.5mm equivalent focal length
Bright f/2 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.
Two aspherical elements, two elements made from anomalous partial dispersion glass, and a pair of aspherical elements also made from low dispersion glass are featured, and all contribute to significantly reducing chromatic and spherical aberrations, color fringing, and distortion for improved clarity, sharpness, and resolution.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 7.9" to infinity.
Integrated OLED display on the top of the lens shows the working focus distance as well as the depth of field range for quickly recognizing the parameters of focus in use, even when working in low-light conditions.
Linear motors benefit the autofocus performance of the lens and provide smooth, fast, and quiet operation. For manual focusing, a rubberized ring offers greater tactile control for precise placement of focus.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.

how does this compare to the Sony 20mm f1.8 in terms of sharpness?
Asked by: Alfred
In my opinion the Zeiss is much sharper than the Sony lens. But it does have a slightly longer focal length and a slightly smaller aperture. Depending on your needs the Sony 20mm or the Zeiss 18mm light be a better option.

Any thought on 24mm 1.4 GM lens? Not sure which one to get.
Asked by: Ilja
I have the Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2 and I absolutely love it. The 24mm f/1.4 might cover a little more with the low aperture. I’m sure you’ll be pleased with either one!

question

Do you guys recommend getting the protection plan from SquareTrade? I heard that this lens is extremely solid as a tank so I don't know if the protection plan is worth it. Thoughts?
Asked by: Jim
Zeiss offers additional warranty if you register your lens within four-week window. This will extend Zeiss warranty to 3 years.

The ZEISS Batis lenses are compatible with any Sony E mount camera, including the a6000 model. The auto-focus is fully functional and the camera's 'Steady Shot' feature works with the lens.

question

Does anyone have experience using the Zeiss Batis 2/25 versus the Zeiss Milvus 1.4/25 on a Nikon? Is the manual focus as good on the Batis? (arc, fine control, etc.) I am considering switching from D810 to A7r iii and worried if the quality of the Batis is compatible to the Milvus. TY
Asked by: Joshua
You can judge the MTF performance differences between the two lenses by viewing the technical data sheets for each lens. These are available under the 'download' section in each product area at www.zeiss.com/photo.The focusing systems between the two are completely different. The Batis is designed as an AF lens with a MF override. like most AF lenses, it is a focus by wire, without hard stops at close focus and infinity. The Milvus lenses are MF only, though focusing on a camera with a EVF and focus aids is simple.
