ZEISS Batis 25mm f/2 Overview

Pairing the tested Distagon concept with contemporary functionality, the ZEISS Batis 25mm f/2 is a wide-angle prime designed specifically for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Its broad field of view makes it well-suited to landscape, reportage, and architecture photography applications and the bright f/2 maximum aperture is ideal for shooting in low-light conditions. The optical design uses a series of aspherical and anomalous partial dispersion elements to greatly reduce color fringing, distortion, and other aberrations to realize sharp, clear, and color-accurate imagery. A floating elements system is also employed for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, and an enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for working in difficult lighting conditions.

Batis-series lenses are distinguished by their innovative use of an OLED display on the lens barrel, which highlights the focus distance and depth of field range for quickly recognizing your focusing parameters. As an autofocus lens, linear motors are used to deliver quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, the lens body also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to permit its use in trying environments.

Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 37.5mm equivalent focal length
Bright f/2 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.
Two aspherical elements, two elements made from anomalous partial dispersion glass, and a pair of aspherical elements also made from low dispersion glass are featured, and all contribute to significantly reducing chromatic and spherical aberrations, color fringing, and distortion for improved clarity, sharpness, and resolution.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 7.9" to infinity.
Integrated OLED display on the top of the lens shows the working focus distance as well as the depth of field range for quickly recognizing the parameters of focus in use, even when working in low-light conditions.
Linear motors benefit the autofocus performance of the lens and provide smooth, fast, and quiet operation. For manual focusing, a rubberized ring offers greater tactile control for precise placement of focus.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.

I have a 20mm F1.8 Sony lens, but I set my eye on this lens for general purpose and land scape shooting. It is built to the high standards of Zeiss. I used it on a Sony A7RM4. Picture contrast and color reproduction are excellent.

It's a Zeiss....you have to love it!

Started building my Batis group of lenses with the 19mm and added this 25mm...these are primarily used for my real estate photography. Bought this on one of B&H's deal zones so got it new for less than any used that were available that day. Keeping my eye open for deal zone pricing on the 85mm and 125mm.

My favorite lens of recent purchase. The focus is crisp and responsive and f2 is the perfect aperture for it.

Sharpness beyond belief

When I purchase a lens the first thing I do when I receive it is run it through extensive test to be sure that it is performing as expected. Prior to buying this lens for my Sony system I have purchased several Zeiss Milvus F mount lenses for my Nikon D850 and Zeiss has never failed to surpass my expectations. With my Sony camera I have used my three Sony GM lenses as a gold standard for Sony performance. WOW! The Zeiss 25mm Batis has performed so well that I have now finally found a full format camera and lens that meets and even exceeds 4X5 film performance. The lens is SHARP beyond belief, the COMA and color CA is incredibly low and the micro contrast is superb across the color spectrum. The Auto Focus is silent and fast. As a Landscape photographer I use hyper focal range settings a lot and the electronic display on the top of the lens is perfect and very refreshing to use both during day time and night sky photography.

how do you turn off the LED on the lens showing the distance on a a7s3?
Asked by: Ronald
According to Zeiss: The displayed unit can be changed from m to ft (and vice versa) by turning the focus ring 360° beyond the minimum object distance (clockwise facing the rear of the camera/lens). The lens is set to metric measurements by default. You can also change the display mode by turning the focus ring 360° beyond the infinity position (counterclockwise). The following options are available: ON: display always powered on, both in manual and AF modes MF: display powered on in manual modes only OFF: display always powered off

Does this lens allow you to use ‘Active’ stabilization on the A7siii? I thought it was because it’s a native lens but I can’t seem to use it. Only Sony branded lenses allow this feature?
Asked by: Andrew
Yes it does on the A7SIII, you just need to ensure that you are in video mode to enable active stabilization, it will not allow you to select this option in a photo shooting mode such as M or S.

how does this compare to the Sony 20mm f1.8 in terms of sharpness?
Asked by: Alfred
In my opinion the Zeiss is much sharper than the Sony lens. But it does have a slightly longer focal length and a slightly smaller aperture. Depending on your needs the Sony 20mm or the Zeiss 18mm light be a better option.
