ZEISS Batis 85mm f/1.8 Overview

  • 1Description

Updating a tried-and-true optical design for use with full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, the Batis 85mm f/1.8 from ZEISS is a portrait-length, short telephoto lens featuring a fast maximum aperture for greater focus control and enhanced low-light shooting. The Sonnar-type design, in conjunction with three anomalous partial dispersion elements, offers high contrast and accurate rendering by virtually eliminating color fringing and chromatic aberrations. A floating elements system is also used, for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, in order to achieve even sharpness and clarity. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions.

Batis-series lenses are distinguished by their innovative use of an OLED display on the lens barrel, which highlights the focus distance and depth of field range for quickly recognizing your focusing parameters. As an autofocus lens, linear motors are used to deliver quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, this lens incorporates optical image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with slower shutter speeds and a dust- and weather-sealed construction lends itself to shooting in trying environments.

Short-telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Sonnar optical concept suits the combination of a large maximum aperture and long focal length, and also contributes to notable sharpness, well-controlled flare, and high contrast.
Three anomalous partial dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Optical image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 2.6' to infinity.
Integrated OLED display on the top of the lens shows the working focus distance as well as the depth of field range for quickly recognizing the parameters of focus in use, even when working in low-light conditions.
Linear motors benefit the autofocus performance of the lens and provide smooth, fast, and quiet operation. For manual focusing, a rubberized ring offers greater tactile control for precise placement of focus.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.

    ZEISS Batis 85mm f/1.8 Reviews

Batis 85mm f/1.8 Lens for Sony E is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 206.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It has exceeded my expectations Ive made about 1500 images with this lens since acquiring it in July of 2018. I almost always shoot wide and first became interested in this lens when I realized more than 90% of what I was shooting with the Sony G master 24-70 on my A7Rii was shot at 24mm. Its low light performance has been very good, its quick to find focus and is sharp edge to edge. As one would expect from a Zeiss product, the build quality is excellent and the handling is crisp. I dislike shooting with a flash and consequently I have found this lenss low light performance solid. If you like to shoot wide and appreciate a prime, this lens is an excellent choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for travel and indoor Great color, great build quality, and very sharp. AF works very good too. One thing this lens has is an OLED window whiich shows you the focus distance and DOF. This is very useful, especially when shooting landscape where you want everything to be sharp. You need to change the lens setting to turn the OLED always on. Read the lens manual! There is one drawback however. The sunstar from this lens is not as good as the Zeiss Loxia lenses. Well, it's not even as good as the modern Nikon wide angle primes like Nikon 20mm f1.8G. I choose this lens over the Zeiss Luxia 21mm f2.8 for its AF and 25mm is more suitable for travel and indoor kids' shoots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! Great for portraits This is my main portraiture lens and is paired with a Sony A7ii. Excellent bokeh (to me), colors, and so very sharp. I own the Zeiss 25/2 and 85/1.8 and am very happy with weight balance (I have medium sized man hands). RAW vs JPEG: I've shot RAW only since purchasing the Minolta D100 many years ago. A7ii plus Zeiss Batis is producing stunning jpegs. Haven't changed my workflow yet, but may be able to for 90% of my shooting situations. Minimum focus distance does limit some applications. For those who are thinking about the Sony GM 85/1.4, I would not. The depth of field with F1.8 is narrow enough and the weight will be difficult to balance with a small camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens To Learn I got this lens for portraits in my photojournalism. I just couldn't do the G Master due to cost and mostly the weight. The Batis is not light, but it balances so well particularly with the lens hood attached- it really feels good. My initial images look very good. Learning to nail the precise focus wide open will take practice. I think a combination of auto and manual focus will be needed. I'm hoping eye autofocus will work well. The only reason I didn't give the lens 5 stars is that it seems to be eating batteries faster than my other lenses. But time will tell for sure. I expect this lens to be on my a7RII a lot along with it's sibling, the 55 1.8. I would calls these my beauty lenses!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Infinity autofocus problems with 7RII Optical quality and autofocus speed is great. BUT: 1. Can't autofocus to infinity 100% correctly with 7RII, even with the latest Sony firmware 2.0. It focuses approximately to 15-20 meters, which is noticable if you shoot at f2.0. So one have to use manual focus to have 100% sharp horison with f2.0. 2. LCD distance scale doesn't waok correctly as well. Again the same problem - indicated figures are less than in reality. Apprpximately 30% less :( Sony and Zeiss service can't resolve the problem at present time. looks like we need to wait for new firmware from Sony...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharpest lens I've ever owned Lens is super sharp. Bokeh has a smooth creaminess to it; a very organic look. CA is not noticeable unless in extreme situations. I use this on my a7 so I'm glad it has OSS. My only 2 gripes is that there is no Aperture control & it's focus by wire. Overall, I love this lens & the images it delivers. If you're deciding between this & the GM 85mm f/1.4, get this. It's lighter, smaller, cheaper, bokeh may be less round toward the edges but is creamier, you won't be disappointed with it's sharpness & it has OSS. Anyway, stop reading my review & buy it already.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A stunning lens - especially spectacular on the new A7Rii This is my new favorite wide angle lens. For years I thought nothing would ever match the Leica 28mm Summicron ASPH which was absolute heaven on the M240, but this one does. It is razor sharp across the frame, has the wonderful Zeiss 'pop' and beautifully rendered OOF areas. Build quality is top-notch. Sure, it's a little big, but the handling on the A7 family bodies is perfect. Plus, you get very fast autofocus, the super-cool digital DOF display and images that will blow you away. Really, just buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Portrait Prime Well Worth Wait Received my copy a couple weeks ago after waiting months after placing my order, and finally had a chance to use it this weekend at a Charity Dinner. Works well when paired with the a7R2 using the Eye AF. Shooting at 1.8 can be tricky with such a narrow DOF, but when you get it right, the centers are razor sharp, and its easy to count upper and lower eyelashes. AF worked quickly in the dark reception hall. I can't speak yet to corner to corner sharpness stopped down, but so far see no reason to expect it not to be on par with the Sony 55 f1.8 if not better. Love the look and overall feel of it hand. Will be very interesting to compare to the newly announced Sony 85 f1.4 G when it comes out, but I think Batis will more than hold its own.

    When will it ship?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have an estimated arrival date for the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 Lens for Sony E Mount. It is available for pre-order, and all pre-orders must be shipped before the lens will be listed as In Stock on our website or in our NYC Superstore. The best I can recommend right now is if you know you want to purchase the lens, I recommend pre-ordering the lens for the soonest arrival. You would be able to contact Customer Service to check on the status of your pre-order. Otherwise, if you are just interested in the lens, I would recommend clicking the white Notify When In Stock button listed on our website so we can contact you via e-mail when the lens is in stock.

Without touching the lens, can you control focus (rack focus, forwards or backwards) either in the camera or-ideally-remotely, via app or whatever? As far as I can tell, you can choose a focus point in the camera/remotely, but haven't seen where you can change the focal plane. Is that possible?
    Asked by: Anonymous
I am able to rack focus with the touch remote app through the playmemories Sony App for shooting photos. I'm not sure if that app works for video, if that is your intended purpose.

On APS-C-sized E-mount cameras, will the auto-focus work? About the stabilisation (OSS)?(For Sony A6000)
    Asked by: Anonymous
While this lens will autofocus on a Sony APS-C mirrorless camera such as the A6000, it will not offer stabilization since the camera does not have it built in.

I have the Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2 and I absolutely love it. The 24mm f/1.4 might cover a little more with the low aperture. I’m sure you’ll be pleased with either one!
