ZEISS Batis 85mm f/1.8 Overview

  • 1Description

Updating a tried-and-true optical design for use with full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, the Batis 85mm f/1.8 from ZEISS is a portrait-length, short telephoto lens featuring a fast maximum aperture for greater focus control and enhanced low-light shooting. The Sonnar-type design, in conjunction with three anomalous partial dispersion elements, offers high contrast and accurate rendering by virtually eliminating color fringing and chromatic aberrations. A floating elements system is also used, for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, in order to achieve even sharpness and clarity. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions.

Batis-series lenses are distinguished by their innovative use of an OLED display on the lens barrel, which highlights the focus distance and depth of field range for quickly recognizing your focusing parameters. As an autofocus lens, linear motors are used to deliver quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, this lens incorporates optical image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with slower shutter speeds and a dust- and weather-sealed construction lends itself to shooting in trying environments.

Short-telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Sonnar optical concept suits the combination of a large maximum aperture and long focal length, and also contributes to notable sharpness, well-controlled flare, and high contrast.
Three anomalous partial dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Optical image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 2.6' to infinity.
Integrated OLED display on the top of the lens shows the working focus distance as well as the depth of field range for quickly recognizing the parameters of focus in use, even when working in low-light conditions.
Linear motors benefit the autofocus performance of the lens and provide smooth, fast, and quiet operation. For manual focusing, a rubberized ring offers greater tactile control for precise placement of focus.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.

    ZEISS Batis 85mm f/1.8 Reviews

Batis 85mm f/1.8 Lens for Sony E is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 114.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! Great for portraits This is my main portraiture lens and is paired with a Sony A7ii. Excellent bokeh (to me), colors, and so very sharp. I own the Zeiss 25/2 and 85/1.8 and am very happy with weight balance (I have medium sized man hands). RAW vs JPEG: I've shot RAW only since purchasing the Minolta D100 many years ago. A7ii plus Zeiss Batis is producing stunning jpegs. Haven't changed my workflow yet, but may be able to for 90% of my shooting situations. Minimum focus distance does limit some applications. For those who are thinking about the Sony GM 85/1.4, I would not. The depth of field with F1.8 is narrow enough and the weight will be difficult to balance with a small camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens To Learn I got this lens for portraits in my photojournalism. I just couldn't do the G Master due to cost and mostly the weight. The Batis is not light, but it balances so well particularly with the lens hood attached- it really feels good. My initial images look very good. Learning to nail the precise focus wide open will take practice. I think a combination of auto and manual focus will be needed. I'm hoping eye autofocus will work well. The only reason I didn't give the lens 5 stars is that it seems to be eating batteries faster than my other lenses. But time will tell for sure. I expect this lens to be on my a7RII a lot along with it's sibling, the 55 1.8. I would calls these my beauty lenses!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharpest lens I've ever owned Lens is super sharp. Bokeh has a smooth creaminess to it; a very organic look. CA is not noticeable unless in extreme situations. I use this on my a7 so I'm glad it has OSS. My only 2 gripes is that there is no Aperture control & it's focus by wire. Overall, I love this lens & the images it delivers. If you're deciding between this & the GM 85mm f/1.4, get this. It's lighter, smaller, cheaper, bokeh may be less round toward the edges but is creamier, you won't be disappointed with it's sharpness & it has OSS. Anyway, stop reading my review & buy it already.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Portrait Prime Well Worth Wait Received my copy a couple weeks ago after waiting months after placing my order, and finally had a chance to use it this weekend at a Charity Dinner. Works well when paired with the a7R2 using the Eye AF. Shooting at 1.8 can be tricky with such a narrow DOF, but when you get it right, the centers are razor sharp, and its easy to count upper and lower eyelashes. AF worked quickly in the dark reception hall. I can't speak yet to corner to corner sharpness stopped down, but so far see no reason to expect it not to be on par with the Sony 55 f1.8 if not better. Love the look and overall feel of it hand. Will be very interesting to compare to the newly announced Sony 85 f1.4 G when it comes out, but I think Batis will more than hold its own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Bottom Line after Weeks of Research in the Field Here's the deal. I shoot Sony A7ii (better dynamic range) and have the 55m 1.8 zeiss, leica 35m 1.4 summ and have demoed just about every possible sony/zeiss lens out. This lens is an absolute killer. The Bokeh is special and incredible. The sharpness is insane, better than the 55m 1.8 BUT it is a tad slower than the 55m on the A7ii and faster on the A7rii having tested it. Doesn't matter; its still really fast on the A7ii. With Eye AF the portraits are incredible. Lightweight, slick. Must own; best lens they have come out with IMHO. Great price and easily can put up against Leica 75m or 90m and get identical detail. This is a tool that is good enough to get exactly what you need and will make you play above your game. However , you still have to put your own skill into creating a unique image. Im in love.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens..Loved it I recived the lens from my local dealer in the UAE. The construction is fantastic and the image quality is great in my initial tests.. Regarding the issue with the first reviewer, he just didn't read the manual. Its very simple 1. The Oled is OFF by default in the autofocus mode. 2. The setting can be changed to Always ON , Always OFF or Manual mode by dialing the focus ring anticlockwise ( for this to work, the camera should be in manual focus mode first).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition, even for landscapes I waited a long time before buying this lens. Mainly because i do mostly Landscape photography. However, I kept finding situations where I would have liked to have had this focal length. I was in Yosemite Park for the moon bow photo opportunity in April, and hiked up the 4 mile trail to see what that perspective might be like. I found my 55 mm worked OK, but would have much preferred an 85. From Glacier Park watching the moon rise over Nevada Falls was another instance. So, now I have a great portrait lens, that works for many landscape situations. Lens is very sharp. Focus is fast (for my purposes), and works well. I do use the LED DOF info, particularly for night photography, where manual focus is required. Broken is amazing, even at higher apertures (5.6 and higher). At 1.8, for near subject, very thin.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No regrets! The decision to buy this lens over the GM 1.4 is not that easy. This lens perfectly fits my needs and I have no regrets of buying it. The color rendition is amazing, its lighter & smaller than the GM, and most of all the price difference. Other feature that I love about this lens is the OSS. If you want to pay more for the BOKAH and weight is not an issue then get the GM . So far I'm very satisfied with this lens.

    When will it ship?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have an estimated arrival date for the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 Lens for Sony E Mount. It is available for pre-order, and all pre-orders must be shipped before the lens will be listed as In Stock on our website or in our NYC Superstore. The best I can recommend right now is if you know you want to purchase the lens, I recommend pre-ordering the lens for the soonest arrival. You would be able to contact Customer Service to check on the status of your pre-order. Otherwise, if you are just interested in the lens, I would recommend clicking the white Notify When In Stock button listed on our website so we can contact you via e-mail when the lens is in stock.
