B+W F-Pro overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 58mm F-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Kaesemann High Transmission Circular (HTC) polarizing filters are fitted with polarizing foils which provide 99.5% light transmission that are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass. The resulting sandwich is then precision-polished to achieve accurate plano-parallel surfaces. Finally, they are edge-sealed to protect the foil against humidity.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers further protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features an F-Pro brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are useful in combination with digital cameras and auto-focus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing over 99.5% light transmission.
2 to 2.8x filter factor reduces exposure by 1 to 1.5 stops.
Constructed from Schott glass for optical clarity.
F-Pro brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.
Plastic case for storage and transport.

    B+W F-Pro reviews

58mm F-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC Filter is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best of the rest I've used a wide variety of filters over my photographic career and have just recently realized how superior the B+W products are. I photographed a landscape scene using a kit filter supplied with a lens previously purchased. I then photographed the exact same scene using the B+W filter. I then enlarged each frame and compared the results and bottom line was that there was NO comparison. The B+W was far superior to the kit filter. No distortion, no aberration, no loss of clarity or any other compromise with the B+W when compared to the other filter. You get what you pay for and this is so true of the B+W line of filters. I will never buy another brand of any type of filter again. I am a B+W customer for good!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not your day's polarizing filter! This polarizer is optimal for use on my 18-55mm f/2.8-4.0 lens on my Fujifilm X-T1: its low 'filter factor' means that aperture is changed effectively only 1.5 f/-stops, yet the filter provides full polarization; it's modest width for its stated diameter means that my lens' lens hood can still be used over this polarizer; &, with external threads on this polarizer, other filters can be added, yet without vignetting on this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Polarizer for Nikon 35mm Lens Using the Nikon 35mm lens for landscape photography the 58mm Kaesemann filter stays on all the time. Other filter attachments can be placed on the front of the filter providing use with gradient filters or neutral density filters without vignetting. The high transmission of light helps with an effective 1.5 f/stop while polarization can used effectively. Quality of the filter is appreciated when going for a sharper more dynamic landscape that you get with a polarizer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from high quality, no stuck threads I use this on my Fuji XF 18-55 and 14/2.8 lenses. Delivers great optical performance. I lose about 1 +/- 0.3 stops of light with this polarizer on. Seems durable, and the rotation action is very smooth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from well made This is a really nicely constructed filter - smooth moving, good glass. It is a little thicker ring than I imagined but I have noticed no vignette effects as I am using it on a normal focal length lense. I have some lower cost polarizers (vivitar, promaster) - this is easily the best

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High quality, great optical performance I use this filter along with a 100 mm f/2.8 Pentax macro. It doesn't degrade the excellent image quality, color is neutral and the brass mounting threads go on and off smoothly. If you need a polarizer, this is a great choice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great value Next to the best and great value ... but have to admit more color shift with this than the more expensive Breakthrough Photography X4 CPL ... so only 4 stars
