B+W XS-Pro overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 46mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Kaesemann High Transmission Circular (HTC) polarizing filters are fitted with polarizing foils which provide 99.5% light transmission that are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass. The resulting sandwich is then precision-polished to achieve accurate plano-parallel surfaces. Finally, they are edge-sealed to protect the foil against humidity.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers further protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention. To further reduce the possibility of vignetting when this filter is in use, the filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size. This may prevent the use of some lens manufacturer bayonet hoods.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing over 99.5% light transmission.
2 to 2.8x filter factor reduces exposure by 1 to 1.5 stops.
Constructed from Schott glass for optical clarity.
Nano coating provides an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

    B+W XS-Pro reviews

46mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superior quality with one caveat I have three Kaesemann filters to fit my different Leica M lenses. I bought separate ones because I'm not a fan of using step up/down rings, although I have used them in the past. However, step u runs tend to limit the functionality of the hood which then can cause extra ghosting and veiling flare, lower contrast, etc. In practice, I try to get the filter as close to the front element as possible with as little protrusion beyond the lens barrel as possible to limit vignetting. Obviously, with longer focal lengths, this becomes less of a problem but especially with wider lenses, this can be a problem. The XS filters are great because of their extremely thin profile and because of this, I almost exclusively purchase slim filters. The one drawback is they can be tough to get on and off since the inner, non rotating ring is just a millimeter or two thick. However, the upside is again, all going towards IQ so I'm happy to make that compromise. In the end, the only real cost to me is I'm a little slower to swap filters if I need to change them. I may pick up a filter wrench to help with this but it's not a necessity by any means. Overall, these are my favorite filters. The brass construction makes them very smooth and I've never had one bind or freeze up on any lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Everything that was great about the optics and construction of the older Kaesemann filters apply to this one, with yet one more improvement: there's no grease everywhere. The older filters were practically dripping with oil (to lubricate the rings) and it took multiple washings and wipings to remove the excess. These are great out of the box and ready to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter Like the brass construction, thin profile, and clarity of the glass. It appears color neutral, with no tendency toward warming, etc. Excellent so far!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality filter and easy to clean The whole design is built well. Based on how much I pay for it, it totally worth it. And it is really easy to clean the file due to the nano coating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth getting I use this on my Leica Summilux and can say it's well worth it for controlling reflections.
