B+W XS-Pro overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 86mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Kaesemann High Transmission Circular (HTC) polarizing filters are fitted with polarizing foils which provide 99.5% light transmission that are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass. The resulting sandwich is then precision-polished to achieve accurate plano-parallel surfaces. Finally, they are edge-sealed to protect the foil against humidity.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers further protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention. To further reduce the possibility of vignetting when this filter is in use, the filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size. This may prevent the use of some lens manufacturer bayonet hoods.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing over 99.5% light transmission.
2 to 2.8x filter factor reduces exposure by 1 to 1.5 stops.
Constructed from Schott glass for optical clarity.
Nano coating provides an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

    B+W XS-Pro reviews

86mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from You Often Get What You Pay For I usually use the higher end Hoya polarizers but I needed a good 86mm CP to use with the Sensei 100mm slide in filter holder system that uses adapters that all have a 86mm thread for screw on filters. This system allows me to share the CP with all my lens with adapters left permanently mounted on lenses as well as slide in a ND/GND over top of the CP if needed. Be aware that with the sensei holder this filter, as thin as it is, uses up the space of the first two slots of 3 but I seldom use a cp when facing into the sun so the one slot is enough for my work. I am very pleased with the results and use it daily in my landscape work to reduce reflections from water and foilage as well for making the sky/clouds pop. It gives me peace of mind knowing that it is sealed to the elements and that I can securely snap on a Sensei 86mm cap on to the threads to protect it. It is thin, for a CP, 5mm (9mm with mounting threads). Because it is thin there is little to grip on the stationary ring if the filter gets stuck so I keep a Sensei 82-97mm filter wrench ready just in case. I do work in extreme cold where bare fingers are not always an option. Bottom line it is a great CP that saves money when used how I use it.
