B+W XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter (46mm, 1 to 5-Stop )

B+W XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter (46mm, 1 to 5-Stop )
Key Features
  • Variable 0.3-1.5 Optical Density
  • MRC Multi-Resistant Nano Coating
  • Slim Aluminum Filter Ring
  • 49mm Front Filter Threads
The 46mm B+W XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing an exposure reduction of 1 to 5 stops. The 0.3 to 1.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is also visually demarcated with dots that represent different density values.

B+W XS-Pro VND 1-5 Stops Overview

The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an antireflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin, oversized mount which helps to reduce the likelihood to vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. The filter ring is made from aluminum.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.
0.3 to 1.5 density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a reduction of 1 to 5 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Offers increased flexibility to use specific ISO settings or ISO films under bright ambient light.
Provides increased exposure flexibility while using cinema or video cameras within a designated film frame rate.
Multi-Resistant Coating offers both protection to the glass and helps to improve light transmission and image quality.
Nano coating promotes an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.
Oversized and slim mount helps to reduce the likelihood of vignetting with wide-angle lenses.

ND filter that works great!

A 5 stop ND filter that works awesome. See my first photo taken with that filter in strong sunlight. Also got the adapter ring to use on my other wide angle lens.

Not too thick!

I think the default photo on the B&H product listing makes it look thicker than it actually is, at least for the 72mm size. I found it to be reasonable and actually thinner than the Tiffen 72mm VND. I've included a couple photos.

Has anyone used this filter with the DJI X5 camera? If so, how is the color fidelity? Is there any specific color cast? Thank you.
Asked by: Anthony
B+W make very high quality filters. This will give you a great performance when used on lens with the X5.

Can someone explain the markings on the filter? Thanks
Asked by: Michael
Thank you for the answers to my question. The following is what I received from B + W: The dots on the B+W Vario ND filter mount do not pertain to specific f-stops. Use these as a guide to repeat or tweak a density, once you confirm results in a given situation.

I have a UV protective filter, Can i use it in addition to a Polarize filter? Stack all 3?
Asked by: Joel
It's typically advised you don't stack filters due to diminishing transmission and risk of unwanted glare/artifacts/color-shifting/cross-polarization.

Hello. I purchased this filter but I am having ...

Hello. I purchased this filter but I am having difficulty working out the stop values for each dotted marker increment on the outside ring? I assume the first dot is 1 stop and last dot is 5 stops. If you divide the rest by 1/3 stop or 1/2 stop, then it does not work out mathematically. Any tips or manuals for this lens?
Asked by: Finn
Unfortunately, this is typical of most variable neutral density filters across the spectrum. The markings between the minimum and maximum do not accurately indicate a precise number of stops, and even brands than mark them with ND factors miss the mark significantly; some brands are off by 1/3~2/3 stops with engraved filter factors. While I am not familiar with the physics and/or engineering reason for this, a commonly accepted technique is to adjust the camera settings first and then dial in the VND filter factor. This might be hard/impractical with longer shutter speeds though, so preemptive testing might be necessary.

question

The description says that this filter features a thin, oversized mount which helps to reduce the likelihood to vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. To use this filter with a smaller diameter lens, what step down ring size would I have to use to be able to use it on a smaller lens diameter - - 77mm or 82 mm to hold this filter?
Asked by: Anonymous
The size step-up ring that would be required for use on your lens would depend on the filter size of your lens. Unfortunately, you did not list the lens you own or its filter size. As the B+W 77mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC nano Filter has 77mm rear filter threads, you would need a step-up ring that has 77mm front filter threads. If you need assistance with locating the proper ring for your equipment, you would have to send an e-mail to [email protected] with the above information and we will assist you with your inquiry.
