B+W 55mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter
Key Features
  • Variable 0.3-1.5 Neutral Density Filter
  • Reduce Exposure by 1-5 Stops
  • Darkens Entire Image
  • Greater Control Over Exposure Settings
The B+W 55mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing an exposure reduction of 1 to 5 stops. The 0.3 to 1.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is also visually demarcated with dots that represent different density values.

B+W 66-1082204 Overview

The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin, oversized mount which helps to reduce the likelihood to vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. The filter ring is made from brass for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Is this a good fit for Canon 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS III (version 3) lens?
Asked by: Pareshkumar
Yes, the B+W 77mm XS-Pro UV Haze MRC-Nano 010M Filter, B&H # BWUVXSP77, would be compatible for use with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens.

question

Is this filter LESS durable that the version WITHOUT the additional Nano coating layer (66-66070222)? According to the information from Schneider Optics the maker of B+W filters: However, a surface structure in the order of nanometers would be mechanically extremely sensitive, if it could be manufactured at all with the required precision. Its cavities could fill up with very fine particles and their peaks could break off or be worn off so that the water-repelling effect is cancelled out there.
Asked by: Yuri
According to B+W, The nano coating is an outer layer of protection that comes standard with all XS-Pro Digital MRC filters. The nanotechnology based characteristic (lotus effect) produces a better beading effect with water making the cleaning of this filter even simpler and faster than ever before. MRC nano has an improved outer (8th) layer over regular MRC. That being said, non-Nano coated B+W filters still remain quite durable and you shouldn't have any issue in using them.

question

The description says that this filter features a thin, oversized mount which helps to reduce the likelihood to vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. To use this filter with a smaller diameter lens, what step down ring size would I have to use to be able to use it on a smaller lens diameter - - 77mm or 82 mm to hold this filter?
Asked by: Anonymous
The size step-up ring that would be required for use on your lens would depend on the filter size of your lens. Unfortunately, you did not list the lens you own or its filter size. As the B+W 77mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC nano Filter has 77mm rear filter threads, you would need a step-up ring that has 77mm front filter threads. If you need assistance with locating the proper ring for your equipment, you would have to send an e-mail to [email protected] with the above information and we will assist you with your inquiry.
