Bells from the Vienna Symphonic Library is a sample-based virtual instrument featuring various types of bell and bell substitutes that are used in the orchestra. These include tubular bells, plate bells, church bells, hand bells, cowbells (cencerros), Burma Bells, sleigh bells, altar-boy bells and more (not all the bells are available in the standard library).
Tubular bells were originally developed to sound like and be a portable substitute for church bells in the orchestra, something that was never achieved. However, today the timbre is valued in its own right and particularly useful in the higher register, whereas the lower register is usually covered by the plate bells. They are arranged chromatically and cover a range of approximately two octaves.
