Overview
Modeling
CINEMA 4D Studio can import and export a variety of file formats, which lets you integrate it in almost any pipeline. The modeling toolset lets you work with parametric or polygonal objects, subdivision surfaces, and all types of deformers and modifiers. CINEMA 4D Studio's non-linear modeling lets you modify parametric objects at any time and is lightweight and fast. The most basic shapes are provided in CINEMA 4D Studio as parametric primitives. Parametric objects can be converted to polygons to serve as a basis for more complex objects. A number of deformers and other generators can be used in conjunction with objects. Splines can be used as the basis for extrudes, lofts, lathes, and sweeps -- all of which can be adjusted dynamically in real-time, and even animated.

Polygon Tools with Real-Time Feedback
CINEMA 4D Studio's comprehensive polygon tools provide real-time feedback. A powerful Knife tool works in conjunction with N-gons to easily cut holes, planes, and paths into objects. The Stitch & Sew tool simplify closing holes between objects. With the Brush & Magnet tools you can easily paint point deformations for more organic objects.

UV Editing
An arsenal of UV editing solutions ensure your models and their materials line up properly. UV coordinates are essential to successful painting and quality texturing in 3D. Whether adjusting for UVs for a low-res game model or a high-res matte painting, you get the UV tools you can count on when the UV mapping is not as perfect as the model.
Materials and Textures
CINEMA 4D Studio offers all standard and advanced options for creating the surface for your models. Materials have 14 different channels and you can even customize channels for specific needs (e.g. game engines). Use images or movies as textures or advanced shaders such als Subsurface Scattering or Backlight. Whether you're creating artificial or natural materials, CINEMA 4D Studio's material system provides incredible control over the surface properties of your 3D objects. The basis for most channels is a texture or shader. For textures, CINEMA 4D Studio supports most popular image formats, including layered PSD files. A wide range of 2D and 3D volumetric shaders simplify creating procedural surfaces and easily simulate glass, wood, or metal. With filter and layer shaders you can easily combine images, shaders and filter effects.

3D Painting
CINEMA 4D Studio offers the ultimate control over your textures with complete layer, filter, and tablet support -- all optimized for working in 3D. Paint on up to ten channels with a single stroke. A brush can define an entire material rather than a single color, and exclusive RayBrush technology lets you view the results of your painting in real-time in a rendered image. The Projection Painting tool lets you paint across UV seams or even multiple objects in a scene.

Projection Man
Projection Man revolutionizes the workflow for creating digital mattes, allowing you to easier set up an initial painting and even easier to patch the matte when necessary. Using internal painting tools or Adobe Photoshop, editing and manipulating extensive digital mattes becomes easy, allowing you to create extended, wild camera rides. Whether you're ballooning over a city, shooting through rapids, flying off cliffs or simply creating a basic set extension, you'll be amazed at the power and speed of the Projection Man matte painting workflow.
Animation
Shift your scenes into the fourth dimension. Virtually any object, material or tag parameter can be keyframed by simply clicking the circle next to its name. To make keyframing even simpler you can activate automatic keyframing of all or selected parameters. The Power Slider lets you quickly define keyframes for the current state at any frame and modify existing keyframes without leaving the default layout. Additional features include an advanced character animation toolset, all-new rigid and soft body dynamics, cloth simulation, event-based particle system, Cloners and Effectors, and even natural hair that waves in the wind.

The Timeline
The Timeline window offers even greater control with tracks for every animatable parameter and options such as layers to organize and control the visibility of objects, tracks, and keyframes. Master Tracks allow easy manipulation of all keyframes attached to a given object or scene and the Region tool helps you easily move or scale any portion of your animation.

F-Curves
Use F-Curve mode for more detailed adjustment of keyframe interpolation, or to simply view the animation. Edit multiple curves instantly and take advantage of the snapshot capability to view a previously stored curve while adjusting the animation.

Non-Linear Animation
Easily build, layer, and loop discreet motions containing hundreds of keyframes in complex hierarchies. You can block out animation based on predefined motions and build upon the basic movement by overlaying additional keyframes or motions.

Audio Support
When your pictures need to sync with audio, you can import sound and view its waveform directly in the Timeline. Better yet, activate scrubbing and listen to your audio as you manipulate the time slider. For the ultimate synchronization, attach sounds to specific objects.

Particles
Any object can be used as a particle -- such as geometry or lights. Particles can then be affected by various effects like gravity, turbulence, and wind to create stunning animations.
Lighting and Rendering
A wide variety of light and shadow types let you brighten up even the most challenging situations. And the render engine takes control of all available processor cores to get high-quality results as quickly as possible. You get a complete array of gaffer's tools and numerous advanced lighting tools such as IES lights for realistic light distribution, Global Illumination for indirect lighting, and a physical sky simulation to realistically light outdoor scenes.

Lighting
Various types of light and shadow calculations provide the basis for a powerful lighting system. Control color, brightness, falloff, and other properties and adjust density and color of each light's shadows. You can also use Lumen or Candela brightness values for any light rather than using abstract percentage values. Create visible or volumetric lights with noise patterns that appear in the light cone. Lights offer settings such as contrast, lens reflexes, shadow color, volumetric light, and noise.

Rendering
CINEMA 4D Studio's renderer delivers great-looking results in short times thanks to its linear workflow, support for multiple processors, HyperThreading, and Multi-Core technology. With Multi-Pass rendering you can easily render color, shadow, reflection, and other effects to individual files for tweaking using your favorite compositing application. Multiple object-based alpha channels simplify layering elements with other 2D and 3D assets. With direct export to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, NUKE, Shake, Fusion, and Motion, your Multi-Pass layers will be ready to composite in no time. CINEMA 4D Studio supports rendering in 16-bit and 32-bit color depth for high dynamic range images in DPX, HDRI, or OpenEXR format. Furthermore, the support of color profiles makes sure your renderings appear as they should, no matter which device you're working with.

Global Illumination
Achieve greater rendering realism with Global Illumination, which provides a more accurate representation of scene lighting by taking into account light that bounces between objects. The Global Illumination engine can also utilize an HDRI-based sky for outstanding image-based illumination.

Stereoscopy
Easily convert existing projects or create new stereo scenes using a few simple camera settings, and preview the stereo effect within the Viewport. Render the merged image or individual channels and preview the stereo effect within the Picture Viewer.

Stereo Camera and Rendering
A few simple settings convert any CINEMA 4D Studio camera into a stereo rig. Simply enable one of the stereo modes, define the eye-separation and convergence, and choose between parallel, off-axis, on-axis or radial placement. Safe regions can be defined manually or automatically.

Real-Time Stereo Display
Preview stereo effects in real-time by enabling the Stereoscopic mode for any view. Stereo previews can be displayed in Anaglyph, Side-by-Side, Interlaced or Active Shutter mode for compatibility with a variety of 3D monitors, projectors, and glasses.
Advanced Character Animation
Character animators and riggers alike need easy-to-use and reliable tools to help them create life-like characters. CINEMA 4D Studio offers numerous features that make professional character animation easier.

The New Character Object
The Character object lets you easily build a rig for any character based on expertly-crafted preset templates for bipeds, quadrupeds, fish, and more. Automatic mirroring lets you build and adjust rigs symmetrically. Once you've adjusted the rig to your character, simply drag the mesh onto the Character object to automatically weigh and bind the mesh to the rig. After completing this simple process you'll have easy access to all Character object controllers and your character is ready to come to life.

Walk Cycles with CMotion
With just a few clicks you can apply a preset walk to your Character object rig with the parametric walk system, CMotion. Apply a Spline curve to almost any parameter to fine-tune the motion. Characters can walk along a line or automatically follow the path of a Spline object, staying aligned to the direction of travel, and even interacting with the underlying surface. Custom step objects provide even more control so that every footstep is a step in the right direction.

Character Component
The Character Component can be used by technical directors, for example, to define objects or hierarchies of a rig as components. Those components can then be packed into a template and be used by artists to easily create their objects using the Character object. All the power of CINEMA 4D Studio's tools, including Python scripts, can be used to define these components. If you don't do character animation, you can use the Character Component feature to build templates for road systems, pipeline creators, and more. Use your creativity to decide what to build with this powerful tool.

Pose Morph
Pose Morph lets you mix various types of animation data, including rotations of entire joint hierarchies or various facial expressions. You can also mix joint and vertex data, parameters, User Data, UVW, or vertex maps.

Visual Selector
The Visual Selector gives you precise control over your character using hot spots. An image of the figure to be animated can be loaded as a background image and the objects are assigned corresponding symbols which are arranged on the tool's display surface. If an object is selected in the Visual Selector, it will automatically be selected in the scene.

Animation Made Easy
CINEMA 4D Studio offers a wide range of advanced character animation tools that make character animation that much easier. For example -- the Quaternion tag, Cappuccino for recording mouse movement as position data, and Auto Redraw for creating dynamic IK setups.
Hair
CINEMA 4D Studio's Hair feature can be used to create hair, fur, feathers, and more. It's fast and has an intuitive interface, unlimited styling options, and dynamic animation. Hair offers realistic render quality and does so with minimum memory use. Even a computer with an average configuration can be used to grow and style millions of hairs

Add Hair and Style
Hair can be applied to an entire object, a polygon selection, or to a texture for a precise dispersion of follicles. Hair has all the tools you need to create any style. The effect of tools and functions can also be restricted to selected regions for even better fine-tuning.

Hair Materials
Real fur and hair have very individual properties. CINEMA 4D Studio's Hair features 18 of its own material channels, which let you define exactly how your hair should look. In addition to the numerous tools that are available for styling hair, materials can be used to add color, frizz, sheen, or whatever other characteristic you need.

Hair Dynamics
CINEMA 4D Studio offers realistic dynamics effects that can be used to bring your hair to life. Forces such as gravity, wind, or turbulence can also be made to affect the hair and create effects no matter what the weather.
Dynamic Effects
Included in CINEMA 4D Studio is an advanced Dynamics system. Based on the proven Bullet library and enhanced with numerous unique tools, CINEMA 4D Studio's Rigid and Soft Body simulation features are one-of-a-kind in the 3D sector.

Rigid Body Dynamics
Rigid Bodies are objects that fall, collide, bounce, and more -- in short, they interact with forces and with one another. Rigid Bodies interact with simulated natural forces and with each other. Parameters such as Mass, Velocity, and Gravity can be used to easily lend dynamic behavior to thousands of objects containing millions of polygons.

Soft Body Dynamics
Soft Bodies are exactly what you need if you want to use simulated forces to deform objects. CINEMA 4D Studio has more than just wobbly shapes -- objects can even be filled with virtual air!

Aerodynamic Forces
Animate with air with the aerodynamic features in CINEMA 4D Studio. Simulate air currents, and let feathers, paper, or leaves glide gently through the air. Use the Double-Sided option to let forces affect objects that have no real depth.

Cloth Simulation
CINEMA 4D Studio offers a powerful cloth solution. Cloth can have many types of characteristics -- stiffness, flexion, friction, and many more. Cloth can stretch or break, just like any real fabric would do, whether wool, satin, cotton, or silk. Cloth can even collide with elements in your scene as well as with itself. Thanks to CINEMA 4D Studio's unique algorithms, most simulations can even be viewed in real time in the Editor View.

Thinking Particles System
Thinking Particles is a rule-based advanced particle system that comes in handy when standard particle effects are just not enough. It uses CINEMA 4D Studio's XPresso interface to provide complete control over individual particles and particle streams. Thinking Particles can interact with one another and with their environment. Objects can be used as emitters and can trigger collision events that deflect particles or spawn new streams. Thinking Particles is an essential tool for artists who push the special effects envelope. If you demand the ultimate discipline of your particles you will appreciate the obedience and intelligence of Thinking Particles. Emit particles from the points, edges, or surface normals of any object with surface emission. Volume emission will emit particles within an object's volume. Thinking Particles also offers a collision detection, which can be used for further effects. It offers amazing possibilities for creating unique particle effects.
3D Motion Graphics
With CINEMA 4D Studio's MoGraph toolset, you can create everything from flying logos to abstract effects. Clone numerous objects and create extruded text with just a few simple clicks. Add Effectors to the mix and put everything in motion, and much more -- often without creating a single keyframe. All this is perfectly integrated into CINEMA 4D Studio and offers a fast and easy workflow. All functions are completely interactive and non-destructive.

Quick and Easy to Use
At the heart of MoGraph is a powerful yet simple Cloner tool. You can easily create live copies of any object -- arranged along a line, circle, grid, object, or spline. Object clones can be placed along points, edges, polygon centers, or randomly across the surface of an object. Adjust keyframe parameters to modify clone count, spacing, and more. Use other objects in MoGraph to easily create extruded text, fracture and extrude spline-based logos, displace objects in real time, and more. Each object can be fully controlled by MoGraph Effectors. Effectors can be applied to almost any MoGraph Generator to effortlessly bring your MoGraph creations to life. Adjust clones mathematically with the Formula Effector or apply the frequency of an audio file using the Sound Effector. Eleven different Effectors can be used in any combination to offer countless animation possibilities.

Dynamics System for Realistic Motion
MoDynamics is based on the proven Bullet physics library and now you can also use MoGraph's powerful Effectors to add dynamics for realism. Set simple parameters like Mass, Bounce, Gravity, Friction, and more and let MoDynamics do the work. Create realistic motion every time.
Advanced Lighting
CINEMA 4D Studio offers you a large set of lighting features.

Sky Tool
Easily create natural surroundings, including clouds, haze, atmosphere, and global positioning. And there is a collection of presets to help you quickly find the fitting atmospheric environment for your scene.

Global Illumination
Achieve greater realism with Global Illumination, which provides a more accurate representation of scene lighting by taking into account light that bounces between objects. The Global Illumination engine can also utilize an HDRI-based sky for image-based illumination.

IES Lights
Many light manufacturers offer IES data for free download to realistically simulate the look of the real lighting fixtures. Brightness, color temperature, falloff, and direction are already included in IES lights to produce realistic lighting.

Caustics
By accurately displaying the effects of light as it interacts with specific materials, CINEMA 4D Studio allows you to easily create Caustic effects, like the reflection of light from the face of a watch or on the bottom of a swimming pool.
Advanced Rendering
Renderings will look even more realistic and exciting with CINEMA 4D Studio's advanced rendering functions, with features such as Global Illumination, Physical Sky, Depth-of-Field, Smoke, Ambient Occlusion.

Physical Render Engine
Render with ultimate realism. Use real camera settings like shutter speed and aperture to view the project through the lens -- with 3D depth of field, motion blur, and more. Render advanced effects like Blurry Reflections and Area Shadows with accurate depth of field and motion blur. The Physical Renderer's shared image sampler samples the project once and shares the result between all these effects, reducing the incremental time required to render each effect and guaranteeing accurate results as the effects combine with one another. The Physical Renderer uses an advanced raytracing engine that increases render power without any reduction in image quality. The more complex a scene is, the more you get out of this increased power, regardless of which processor you're using.

More Photorealism
Achieve an even more photorealistic look with the physically correct depth of field effect, which also lets you render objects that lie behind transparent surfaces. The new Physical Renderer now renders these objects directly in the image and not as a post effect.

Accurate 3D Motion Blur
Produce accurate 3D motion blur based on real optical parameters. Rotational motion is blurred properly because the full 3D animation data is used. And because the blur is produced at render time rather than as a post effect, it interacts properly with shadows and other elements.

Physical Camera
Imitate a camera using focal length, etc. to dial in the depth of field and motion blur. You can also define ISO or gain. Simulate camera flaws such as lens distortion for the ultimate photorealism.

Stereo Camera and Rendering
Convert a camera into a stereo rig. Enable one of the stereo modes, define the eye-separation and convergence, and choose between parallel, off-axis, on-axis, or radial placement. Define safe regions manually or automatically.

Real-Time Stereo Display
Preview stereo effects in real-time by enabling the Stereoscopic mode for any view. Display previews in Anaglyph, Side-by-Side, Interlaced, or Active Shutter mode for compatibility with a variety of 3D monitors, projectors, and glasses.

Advanced Material Settings
Create displacement effects with SubPolygon Displacement (SPD) and use Subsurface Scattering to simulate the scattering of light beneath the surface of objects to more accurately simulate materials such as wax, fluids, jewels, organic materials, and skin. PyroCluster uses particles to create stunning special effects like smoke, dust, fire, and more.

3D Like it's Drawn
Use the Sketch & Toon toolset to create non-photorealistic styles of 3D renderings. Render 3D scenes as a quick scribble or charcoal sketch.

Network Power
Team Render is a network rendering concept that uses peer-to-peer communication to distribute render tasks. Because there's no bottleneck at a central server, the assets required to render your scene get to each client quicker.

3rd-Party Renderers
Many 3rd-party developers offer their render engines for use in conjunction CINEMA 4D Studio. These include 3delight (via CineMan), AIR (via CineMan), Arion Render, Final Render Stage 2, fryrender, Indigo Renderer, LuxRenderer, Maxwell Renderer, mental ray / iray (via md4), octane renderer, Pixar's RenderMan (via CineMan), and VRay for C4D.

Organize your sculpt project in layers, each with its own sculpt level, mask, and strength settings. Simply click any layer to activate it and jump to the appropriate level of detail. Arrange layers in any order and even within folders, so you can always easily find and activate the right layer. You can freeze your sculpts at any time to release the memory being used by sculpting and view the effect of deformation on your sculpted mesh.

Flexible Tools
Mold your mesh with CINEMA 4D Studio's flexible sculpting tools, each of which have unique size and pressure options that can be interactively adjusted or linked to the properties of your tablet pen. Smoothly paint continuous strokes with the Steady Stroke option. Use special drag options to precisely place Sculpt Stamps, and easily create repetitive stamps with the Repeat tool. Sculpt finer details with the help of Masks and Stencils. Create and share your own stamps and stencils, or take advantage of the extensive preset library.

Mirroring and Masking
Stay focused and keep on sculpting. The Symmetry options within each sculpt brush now support CINEMA 4D Studio's workplane, so you can easily mirror strokes across an offset axis. Keep your strokes fast and fluid by focusing on one side of the model, and use the new Sculpt Symmetry option to mirror strokes across the mesh or even equalize the sculpting on both sides. To further focus on small sections of the sculpt, simply hide polygons using a mask.

Base Meshes
Use your own models or one of the base meshes provided in the Sculpt presets library. The library's generic human, animal and dinosaur forms provide a start for many sculpting projects. Simply double-click any mesh, click Subdivide a few times, and start sculpting.

Mesh Projection
Squeeze out every detail with optimized topology. Combine multiple Sculpt objects into a single sculpt with optimized edge flow using the new Project Mesh feature. Whether you need more edges to sculpt appendages or just want to optimize the mesh for animation, you can model a clean topology over your existing sculpt and quickly adapt it to the final shape with all the sculpt details intact based on your desired subdivision settings.

Baking
With CINEMA 4D Studio's integrated sculpting, you can freeze and deform your sculpted creations without the need to bake them. Optimize the scene and prepare it for export to game engines or other applications by baking the sculpt to lower-polygon geometry with automatic creation of Ambient Occlusion, displacement, and normal maps.
Customizing
CINEMA 4D Studio lets you fully customize nearly everything. From its easy-to-use node-based XPresso system to scripting with its own C.O.F.F.E.E. language, the Python language, or a complete C++ SDK.

XPresso
Build extensive relationships and add interaction to your 3D scene with XPresso, CINEMA 4D Studio's visual node-based drag-and-drop Expressions editor. XPresso is a tool that lets you intuitively create relationships between almost any object, material, or effect parameter. Variables within your expressions can be linked to sliders in the Attribute Manager to create driven-key animation or complete slider-based interfaces to your 3D scene. Explore XPresso and discover the power of relational animation.

Your Own Scripts and Plug-Ins
CINEMA 4D Studio offers three options for programmers to create their own functionality: programming in C.O.F.F.E.E., a proprietary programming language; Python, a standard programming language; or C++ SDK.
Assets
Get your results quickly. CINEMA 4D Studio includes many assets such as materials, objects, and environments that allow you to easily create realistic visualizations from basic models. Simply drag and drop assets from the Content Browser into your scene and your results will be ready fast.

Decorate Your Scene
The comprehensive object and material libraries included in CINEMA 4D Studio provide everything you need to create great-looking visualizations. Various types of human figures, ranging from abstract to photorealistic, and from 2D to 3D, help liven up your scene. Also included are various office furnishings (desks, chairs, shelving, containers, lecterns), living room furnishings (tables, sofas, lamps, chairs), and bathroom fixtures (bathtubs, sinks, toilets, mirrors). To top off your scene, there are also numerous useful outdoor objects (traffic and street lights, benches, bus stops, etc.). For product visualizations, there's a selection of perfectly-lit studio sets. Simply drag your object in and adjust the settings to fit your needs and get quick results. All objects, materials, and scenes have been optimize. Only high-end materials have been used that make producing great-looking renderings easy. Each object's geometry has been optimized for minimal memory usage -- without compromising quality.

Additional Assets for Broadcast Design
CINEMA 4D Studio comes with a library packed with commonly implemented and ready-to-use items, including 3D models and materials for news production. You will also find ready-to-use scene files for lower space thirds, over-the-shoulder graphics, and title screens that you can easily adapt for use in your own projects. When you've got tight deadlines that you can't afford to miss, you can use preset lighting and camera setups. These give you instant looks such as the docu-cam, which mimics the shaky movement and snap zoom typical of hand-held cameras. You also get access to several gigabytes of royalty-free video and audio clips.
