Aputure HR672 overview

  • 1Description

With the Amaran 3-Point 2-Spot 1-Flood Daylight HR672 3-Light Kit, Aputure has brought together a trio of one of their most popular lights for location or studio work. The kit comes with 2 wireless remote controls for central command of the lights especially those situated in hard to reach places. Each light includes a multi-voltage AC adapter, 2 Sony-type batteries and chargers, a tilting stand adapter with 5/8" spigot, and both a diffusion and an orange tungsten conversion filter. It all fits in the provided kit case.

The Amaran HR672 Daylight 25° Spot and Flood 75° LED panels use 672 95+ rated LEDs to render colors with optimal precision and accuracy. The lights' 5500K color temperature means that you can easily match it with other daylight sources like HMIs and cool white fluorescents, as well as balance the unit with ambient daylight conditions. An orange conversion (3200-5500K) filter is supplied to match tungsten lights or for creative late day lighting effects.

Among the HR672's advanced features is wireless control of the light's functions and light intensity from up to 328' away thanks to 2.4 GHz FSK technology. This is an especially valuable tool for adjusting lights hung overhead or on large sets or locations. It's also great for solo shooters and multi-light setups. The included remote control has 4 discrete channels to defeat interference and 3 groups for multiple setups. The HR672 also features a stepless rear dimming dial for adjusting light output from 0 to 100%. The light panels can be powered by the included multi-voltage AC adapters or the included NP-F970 batteries using the dual rear battery slots. Four LED indicator lights on the back of the unit display the remaining battery life.

The 9.37 x 7.48 panels are only 1.26" thick and generates little heat allowing them to squeeze into places where other lights, especially incandescents, just can't go.

  • Amaran HR672S Daylight LED Spot Light

Aputure HR672 reviews

Amaran 3-Point 2-Spot 1-Flood Daylight HR672 3-Light Kit is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Overheats and lights shut down I bought this kit for it's size and portability. I had heard good things from other freelancers, but I cannot recommend this product in good conscience. My first time using the kit, half of the lights started shutting down and then popping back on after 20-30 minutes of use. It was extremely embarrassing as I was working with a regular client and their CEO. I emailed Aputure directly about it and inquired about the issue. I was told that they do tend to heat up and not to use the filters, as they make them hotter. I replied nicely and said that really didn't make sense and I would like to return the lights if they are not intended to work with the diffusion or color correcting filters. This is what I received back. I can understand you feeling, when you buy something, but you cannot use it happily, no one will feel good. Please calm down, let us work out the problem together. I consulted our technicist, it is better for you to remove the filter when you use it, and when it has a good cooling system, it can work well. In addition, please make sure Light is perpendicular to the ground and do not use anything to Block the ventilation holes. I do hope my suggestion will help you a lot so that you can solve your problem quickly. Any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. So not only are they not designed to use with the filters, but they are only supposed to work perpendicular to the ground. That would actually nullify another accessory they include, which is the light stand adapters that allow you to change the angle of the light. Do not buy these lights.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Inconsistent color and over heating. I picked up two of these kits to light interview and corporate shoots after testing a single 672s and really liking how it looked. I went to my first shoot with the kit, set two up on a single light stand; one on the top of the stand like usual, the other hanging upside down just below the first light connected to the stand with a 1/4 20 clamp. I set up a second pair of lights like this and used the two remaining lights for hair lights. The dual lights I shot through white umbrellas. Once the umbrellas were opened I noticed the bottom of the umbrella looked green and the top of the umbrella looked white. After testing both dual light setups, I saw that the 672s spots are white and the 672w floods have a green cast. Not good. After 10-20 minutes of being on at full power, the lights that were hanging upside down started flickering badly. The flickering was a 10-30% change in power every 1-5 seconds. I lowed the power down from 99 to 50 and within 5 minutes or so the flickering stopped. I was pretty frustrated with these light kits after my first experience with them. After the shoot, I pulled them out at home and did further tests. Here's what I found. All 6 lights will flicker when they overheat. They overheat and flicker the most when they're at full power with one of their diffusion filters inserted into the front and placed on their sides or upside down. Three of my lights would flicker when they were at full power with diffusion and placed rightside up. None of my lights flicker at full power if I remove the diffusion no matter how I place them. This was tested in a small room with a temperature of around 75 degrees. I did get an RMA from B&H and was considering sending them back, but work picked up and I wasn't able to be without lights. I never use them with the diffusion in and just diffuse the light with umbrellas or screens. This has kept them from overheating and flickering. To address the green case issue, I emailed Aputure's customer support explaining the issue and asked if I could send them the two 672w's in exchange for two more 672s's. I thought this was a fair request as they had produced a light kit where the lights aren't color matched. They never responded to me. Now I have two of these kits that only have 4 out of the 6 lights between them usable for accurate color. Because of the color and flicker issues I can't recommend these light kits to anyone and discourage people from getting them. I really wanted to love these kits but they've left me disappointed. I really wanted to love Aputure but their customer service seems non-empathetic based on other's reviews and non existent based on my experience.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super convenient. Cheap plastic body. Overall great deal These are my first LED lights and I am loving the convenience and portability. These lights are easy to set up and take down and all three lights fit with all of their accessories in a bag that is smaller than the box I would store one of my CFL light kits in. I do worry a little bit about the cheap feel to the plastic bodies, especially on the battery mounting points. Still, the color rendition and power output is great for the price. I also really like the balance in hardness/softness of the light you get out of a panel like this. I think it's just the right size to use either on its own, or with umbrellas or umbrella softboxes. I will likely buy more of these LED panels in the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice kit I am impressed by the content of the kit - includes batteries and remotes. Although B&H's online description says that the kit contains a remote for each light, the kit ships with only two remotes. I first thought I was missing a remote but after research I found that the kit was supposed to contain only two. That doesn't create a problem for me since you only need one remote to control all three lights. My concern with these lights is durability. They are not shoddy in their construction but they feel a little delicate. Time will tell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easiest lighting kit to use Right out of the box (carrying case) this kit is easy to setup and get going. It just makes sense and the amount of accessories that come with the lights is a bonus. My only complaint is that they're not super rugged lights, but if you take care of them and use the provided carrying case then I don't see any issues.
