Ilford Multigrade Gelatin Filter Set 6 x 6" (12 Filters)

Contrast control with multigrade and variable contrast black & white photographic papers can be achieved in several ways. One of the most widely used ways is through the use multigrade or variable contrast hand filters.

A magenta filter absorbs green light and transmits blue;
A yellow filter absorbs blue light and transmits green.
In this way, high and low contrast images can be made.

Ilford produces twelve multigrade filters that are numbered 00 - 5 in 1/2 steps, with the lowest filter number corresponding to the softest contrast.

Filters are available in sets of filters 3-1/2 x 3-1/2" (8.9 x 8.9cm) and 6 x 6" (15.2 x 15.2cm ). They can be used above or below the lens and can be cut to fit the enlarger filter drawer.

Filter sizes 12 x 12" (30 x 30cm ) are available to special order. .

Multigrade filters are very easy to use: no complicated calculations are needed when changing from one filter to another. The exposure time for filters 00 - 31/2 is the same; that for filters 4 - 5 is double.

Ilford 1762640 reviews

Multigrade Filter Set - 6x6" (12 Filters) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential for Multigrade I bought this set of 6x6 Multigrade Filters for an old Beseler 23C Series II enlarger. To use them in the filter bay I had to shave off about 1/2 from two sides with scissors, not difficult. These filters allow you to make maximum use of the contrast enhancement available with multigrade photo papers and give you another essential tool for getting a desirable result. The filters are high quality plastic and the storage booklet keeps them well protected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again I just recently got back into a Darkroom and decided to upgrade my Ilford filters. Since I have a second home in Florida, I will have two separate enlargers so I needed two sets which I use below the lens. I ordered the 6X6 set so I could cut them to 2.5in X 3in(very carefully so as not to scratch them.) I will have the ability to cut more if I do scratch them. So far they are working well with no complaints but I was a little concerned when I compared them to my old set of Ilford filters as the old set's #00 was very yellow and the new #00 was more of a peach color. There were noticeable differences throughout the range but I am sure Ilford had their reasons to change.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Diversity In The Darkroom How do you turn a box of black and white paper into 12 boxes with different contrast? Of course by using variable contrast grade paper and these filters. With Kodak no longer supporting black and white printing other sources must be called into play. There are still many fine black and white papers in Europe and Ilford is one of them. It is just too costly to stock the many different grades of paper needed to produce fine art prints, so these filters are necessary to bring the diversity into the darkroom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth buying Previously I had used the smaller Multigrade filter set that fits under the enlarger lens, however the universal filter holder that holds the filters below the lens is not ideal - it wobbles and falls off all too easily. (If you think about it, it can't be much better as it has to be usable with all, or the majority of, enlargers). Plus the fact that the image from the negative shines through the filters which are almost certainly not optically perfect. Enter the 6x6 filters. These fit between the condenser and negative carrier in the color filter draw and so avoid the problems associated with the under-the-lens set. Thus, if your enlarger has a color filter draw go for the 6x6 filters, otherwise you have no alternative but to use the less user friendly under-the-lens set. My enlarger (Beseler 23C II) takes a 5.5 inch square filter which meant cutting 0.5 inches off two sides of each filter, but this is easy enough to do. My advice is to cut a piece of card of exactly the right size, check its fit in the enlarger, then use it as a template to cut the 6x6 filters down to size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product This product is very important for any development of pictures. The use of the filters, changes the contrast of the negatives of the pictures that were taken, by applying it to a machine that allows the development of pictures to take place. The only problem is that the filter may not fit in the panel its suppose to be inserted in, so cutting it may take place so that you can get a perfect fit. I had to cut a centimeter off one side of the filter. As for everything else, the filter is just perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again I have a beseler 23CII enlarger but the filters were about 3/8 inches to big. I had to trim them to fit. They work great now that they fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Way to get your VC filter above the neg! -more increments than usual filter sets -cut your filter to your enlarger's filter holder -above-negative filtration for better image quality

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great! I had to get these filters for a black and white photo class that I'm taking and they work great! Its nice how they are separated in the box with tabs and it makes it easy to find the right filter in the darkroom. ...
