Aputure AL-H overview

  • 1Description

The Amaran H198C from Aputure is an on-camera LED light that utilizes 198 LEDs with a CRI of 95+ to deliver bi-color illumination with high color accuracy. The light produces a 60° beam angle with a brightness of 420 - 435 lux at a distance of 3.3'. A step-less dimming dial is provided on the back of the unit for adjusting light output, and you can adjust the color temperature precisely by turning the kelvin wheel. The light can be powered by either six AA batteries or an optional Sony NP-F/FM/QM/FP/FH/FV type battery, with four LED indicator lights on the back of the unit displaying the remaining battery life.

To create a larger light source, up to nine H198C panels can be attached together using extension slots on all four sides of the light. The slim and frameless design of the light means that when multiple lights are connected, there are no gaps or light leaks. One extension attachment piece comes included, which also serves as a 1/4"-20 adapter. Also included are a swivel shoe mount adapter for camera mounting and a diffusion filter.

Amaran H198C On-Camera LED Light is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 55.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Solid Light Pretty solid light for the price. Is a bit flimsy, but I'm used to working with cheaper lights and I use it for run and gun shooting, so it gets the job done. Easy to control. I use a Sony NP battery for it, and it works pretty well. I prefer a camera battery that works with it over a bunch of AA batteries. I attach it to the top of GH4, or, when needed, it attaches to a shoulder rig. When I'm in a pinch and need extra light, I also sometimes just set it up on a chair or desk and point it at my subject! Works for some basic 3 point lighting if you don't have another standing light!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tremendous portable light This lighting fixture is one of the most useful I own and at least two (and sometimes four) come with me on every shoot. While I have bigger, more powerful lights, the speed of use, quality of light, ability to change color temperature and the small power footprint of these lights make them indispensable, especially for documentary type shoots. While I don't know the CRI of these particular lights, I have never had issue with color output (no green tinge, no gels needed to enhance the light). Skin tones look true at any temperature setting. If I had to suggest any cons to these lights, it would be build quality. If you take care of your equipment, then it's not an issue, but if you have crews that tend to be hard on gear, these might be a little fragile. They are plastic, with plastic cold shoe adapters that can break if stressed. That said, I have had these lights on the road for over 3 years and have had no issues whatsoever. At this price point, with the quality of light and relatively high output, getting at least two of these is a no brainer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Power In your Pocket This on-camera light is hands down the best bang for your buck out there! With an incredible color accurate CRI this light doesn't have any green or magenta tints of any kind. The light can be powered for almost 4-5 hours on high with six 2600m AA batteries. (Don't mix the AA batteries) The knobs are not the great quality but get the job done. Others have seen flicker which I attest to getting a dud unit. With any manufactured product there are bound to be a small percentage of defects but the unit I received was solid. The only reason I have to give this light 4 instead of 5 is the mounting option is limited to a strange double cold shoe configuration that is lacking and screw mounting points in the unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value Used for on-camera video camera light, and on a microphone stand with a second unit for fill light. Best features are the use of regular AA batteries, variable color temp, and a diffusion filter to soften the light source. Plenty of light output for shooting wedding reception guest interviews in almost total darkness situations up to groups of 6. I like these so much I bought two. The only improvement I can see is to put some metal on the bottom where the hot shoe mount is. The value is excellent and I would buy another if I need a 3rd.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well made and versatile It's pretty bright, it is pretty well made (plastic of course) and it's bi-color. This is made to go on your camera or camera cage. It takes AA batteries or the Sony batteries, which can be pretty big and last all day on one charge. My only complaint is the included sliding adapter allowing you to mate identical H198c lights is so tight, I had to use some fine sandpaper to get it slide in. I guess they didn't want the lights to fall off, but it's so hard to slide, I was afraid I would break the plastic adapter or the light case itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a win... As a videographer I love having all different kinds of lights. As of right now I own 2 Aputure Lightstorms and now this little guy. The reason I bought this is because of its size and convenience. For $50 it was a no brainer. I use this little guy as a rim light for interviews and its perfect. It also hides very easy on set, so its always great to have around. Another thing, the CRI is fantastic. Just get it. I forgot to mention that Bi-Color.... It's great. It does what it's supposed to do, and it does it very well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mounting adapter useless... If you have a camcorder with an accessory shoe, like on a DVX 100B for example. The shoe to light mount bracket adapter does not have a shoe on both ends, making it impossible to mount light to cam shoe This made a partly hand held HS reunion shoot VERY difficult. Had to carry my Bogen too and mount that way. A PITA , a minor thing ,but found this out too late. The light however works out excellent , helps out in dance floor shots when dj ' s often turn down the house lights. giving _ star d because of mount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very bright. These things put out way more light than I expected from such a compact unit. They may not be a strong as my bigger lights, but in most situations I can probably get by with these just fine instead of the bigger bulkier kit I have to drag along for the other lights.
