Focusrite 8-Pre overview

  • 1Description

Designed for recording studios, the Focusrite Clarett 8Pre Thunderbolt Audio Interface combines 24-bit 192 kHz A/D/A conversion, 119 dB real-world dynamic range, 1 ms roundtrip Thunderbolt latency, and eight microphone preamps that can model the sound of the company's ISA transformer-based preamps using the "Air" effect. The high resolution recording and ultra-low latency allows you to enable 64-bit AAX, AU, and VST compatible DA plug-ins while monitoring recordings. The interface is now fully compatible with Windows-based computers, providing stable operation with identical functionality on both platforms, while offering sub-3 ms latency. Also provided is a Windows version of the Focusrite Control software mixer for monitoring and routing configuration.

The interface comes with 64-bit AAX, AU, and VST compatible Red 2 and Red 3 plug-in suite. In addition to the Red Plug-in Suite, the interface includes the Softube Time and Tone Pack. Modeled after the Drawmer 1973 FET Stereo compressor hardware, the Drawmer S73 Intelligent Master Processor is a plug-in that aids in balancing and shaping a mix. TSAR-1R Reverb adds space, depth, and width to a sound. Change settings with a single slider, from realistic three-dimensional rooms to dramatic and dreamlike halls. Tube Delay is an echo effect that can go from clean to rude by overdriving its three modeled tube stages - delivering everything from realistic room echoes, to rockabilly style slap back, to dub reggae echo. Saturation Knob is a modeled output distortion unit that adds grit and warmth - use it to fatten up bass lines, add some harmonics and shimmer to vocals, or simply destroy a drum loop.

Housed in a 1RU chassis, the interface features two front mic/instrument/line and six rear mounted mic/line combination TRS/XLR connectors-each with a separate gain knob, six line level ¼" TRS outputs, two ¼" TRS monitor outputs, a word clock output, 5-pin MIDI I/O, stereo S/PDIF I/O, and eight channels of ADAT I/O for expansion.

The front panel also features two ¼" TRS headphone outputs with separate volume controls. A pair of +48V phantom power switches allow you to turn on phantom power for condenser microphones on channels 1-4 and 5-8 respectively. A six-segment multi-channel LED meter provides visual feedback, as well as level control, a dim button, and a mute button.

Eight New Clarett Mic Pres with Extra "Air"
Features a special "Air" setting that switches in an analog model of the classic transformer-based Focusrite ISA microphone preamplifier while the instrument inputs provide extra headroom to handle the loudest pickup
Use DAW Plug-ins in Real Time
Thunderbolt connectivity provides a round trip latency of 1 ms which enables you to monitor through your DAW with your favorite plug-ins such as EQ, reverb, or compression

I/O
Provides 18 audio inputs and 20 outputs within a 1U rack space, including eight analog inputs, 10 analog outputs, stereo S/PDIF I/O and eight channels of ADAT I/O. The ADAT ports are ideal for sending audio to an external D/A for line output expansion, or adding eight channels of digital mic pre

    Focusrite 8-Pre reviews

Clarett 8Pre 18x20 Thunderbolt Audio Interface is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Right Decision I was looking for a new interface to replace my firewire unit. I like to record, not mess around with equipment. Therefore, I was looking for a device that had low latency, good manufacturer support, and made it easy to get great recordings. My choice was quickly narrowed to the Focusrite Clarett 4Pre, because my audio computer is Windows 10. After some thought and a little hardware fever, I opted for the Clarett 8Pre. I like having my connections on the back side and the LED meter. The price for a Clarett 8Pre is great for a piece of equipment of this quality. I had no issues hooking it up to my computer, and works great with my audio platform (FL Studio). The low latency is incredible. Also, the 'Air' setting on the inputs is really worth trying out on all your instruments. The 'Air' setting is on more than it is off on my unit. It was the right decision for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I'm up grading for an older interface- Tascam FW-1814. The Focusrite is much faster with the Thunderbolt 2 and sounds great. Also the latest mix control software is much more clear and easy to use than the previous one for Scarlet or Saphire. The sound quality, stability, speed, ease of use, flexibility are great and for a great price, specially from BH. Totally satisfied.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Recording Interface --Now Includes Windows Support I have long salivated over buying this well-regarded product. BHPhotoVideo gave me the opportunity to turn this into a purchase. I had hoped to employ this fine interface with my new 'gamers' grade' USB C p/c. No problems loading the software. Unfortunately I am back to a wait and see stance towards Focusrite as though they developed the Control Interface to be compatible with Thundebolt 2, they stopped short of considering the physical interface of USB C and Thunderbolt 3. This inspite of their 'suggestion' to employ the Apple Thunderbolt 1,2 to USB C Thunderbolt 3 Adapter, which I did. I have advised Focusrite that using this adapter does not solve the current problem that I can't use the interface with this new p/c as the Focusrite Control Software doesn't 'see' the hardware interface. Oh and as you know Apple also now uses the USB C interface for Thunderbolt 3. I hope the deal I got through my fine retailer, BH, was not intended to clear the shelves of gear with the original Thunderbolt connectors as we await interface/peripheral manufacturers producing Thunderbolt 3 gear with USB C connections. The Clarett line should still be considered a fine interface option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Mac Thunderbolt Interface and quality Pre amps I am somewhat a newbie to digital recording and I have looked at several other options including the Tascam US-16x08 USB Audio/MIDI Interface, PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL - USB 2.0, Tascam US-20x20 USB, Behringer U-PHORIA UMC1820 - USB 2.0, and the MOTU 8pre 16x12 USB, they are all USB buses and for a lot less money. However, since I have a recent Mac Book Pro, I felt is would be work the $ to get the Thunderbolt bus for speed (1-2 MSec round trip latency) and compatibility with the Mac OS. These other units may be great value and do what you need for a lot less money; I figured the extra capabilities of the Focusrite Claret 8pre gives you great plugins for not extra cost and the fantastic Pre-amps for the mics. The investment will pay off in the long run, if I decide to sell the unit at a later date, I will get a good amount of my investment back. I am very pleased with this unit and would recommend it for entry into digital recording. BTW, I use seven channels to mic my drum kit with inexpensive Pyle PDK M7 drum mic kit and the recordings sound great.
