Vello BG-S3 overview

  • 1Description

The Vello BG-S3 Battery Grip is designed specifically for the Sony Alpha a7 II, a7S II, and a7R II cameras. The grip holds one or two NP-FW50 batteries which effectively doubles your shooting time when both batteries are installed. The design of the grip provides a comfortable way to hold and shoot your camera in the vertical position.

The BG-S3 has a vertical-position shutter-release button, an alternate AF/MF/AEL button, three custom buttons, rear and main control dials, and an on/off switch. It is designed with an anti-slip rubber grip and firm curvature to further improve handling. The grip screws into the camera's tripod mount, and it has another tripod mount on its bottom for attaching to a camera support. A metal mount allows you to attach a camera strap to the BG-S3 for convenient carrying.

    Vello BG-S3 reviews

BG-S3 Battery Grip for Sony Alpha a7 II, A7S II & a7R II is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 90.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Battery Grip For Sony A7 II series Cameras I use the grip on my Sony A7 II body. The first thing that I noticed, it is much lighter than the Sony battery grip. The material quality was not as good as the Sony version. It installed rather easily, but still not as good as the Sony. It is a very snug fit and i had to really tighten it to the body. The comtrols are well laid out and it actuay has more features than the Sony grip. It has the C1,C2, C3 buttons as well as an AF/MF switch. It also has a seperate on/off switch. It represents a very good value and I would highly recommend it due to the price versus the expensive Sony model

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Well I purchased this grip not really for use with portrait shooting. I purchased it to extend the battery life on my Sony a7s II. This does the trick. It's built decent. Batteries click in easily. Mount it strong. I can't say much about the buttons because I don't really use that aspect. It does improve the grip on the Sony a7s II, giving you something more substantial to hold. Good for guys with big hands. My one complaint is that I got a tiny bit of bug spray on my hand. When I touched the grip, the plastic began to dissolve and got all over me. Seems it's not the highest quality plastic.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Grip has major GLITCHES. Save your $$. I hope I can save someone else $$.I have 2 Sony A7S ii and I've tested the issues I (and others) on both cameras. I'm experiencing random setting changes when the grip is installed. In Manual Mode, the f/stop will suddenly jump from, for example, 5.6 to 7.1. Bad news for video, for sure. This issue only occurs only when the battery grip is installed on either of my cameras. It occurs 100% of the time when running more than roughly 20 seconds.Sometimes it will randomly open other menu items as well and is not limited to causing the f/stop to jump. Lastly, this issue occurs whether the grip is set to on or off.Hope I've saved ya' $$... I'm only posting to save others $$.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Excellent alternative to the Sony... once I fixed it. I bought this as an inexpensive alternative to the rather pricey Sony grip for my A7ii. Out of the package it looked nice. Not Sony's level of quality, but at less than a quarter the price, it looks great. I pulled the door off my camera and begin mounting the grip. One problem, the knob to tighten the 1/4 screw on my camera would only rotate just shy of a full rotation. I figured it was a safety stop or something before I realized it takes multiple rotations to firmly attach it to the camera. I was pretty upset realizing this clearly is not working properly. Instead of boxing it up, returning it, waiting for a new one, etc., I decided to open just the top plate and see if I could see a problem. Lo and behold, there's (what appeared to be) a small ball bearing resting between two teeth on the knob side of the gears. I removed it, put it back together and it works great. I'm giving it a 3 star review because had someone not been confident enough to start dismantling a brand new battery grip, it would have been viewed simply as defective and would return it. I almost did. Functionally, it works great. I haven't had an issue yet in the 200 photos I've taken since purchase.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad Hardware, Camera not functional for the first few months, I owned this grip it worked just fine. However, I began to get frequent errors on my camera saying that I needed to insert genuine batteries for the camera to operate, I never had this problem whenever I wasn't using the grip. This problem continued to progress and eventually I decided that enough was enough and I needed to replace it. BUT, due to terrible hardware used by Vello, the screw used to mount to the body of the camera stripped inside my camera's tripod mount, and right now it is impossible to remove, leaving my camera completely non-functional. Thank you Vello.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stay clear of this grip!! Get the official Sony version. This is my second version (returned the first hoping it was just a single unit affected and will be returning this one for the Sony version) and both have the same problem. They trigger buttons on the camera at random. Specifically the record video start stop button. This is a huge problem because it will ruin shots. It has also changed the shutter speed button which causes the video to flicker when you change it. There is an On/Off switch to activate or deactivate the buttons from the grip. Don't let this fool you, the grip will STILL press buttons at random when it's switched to off. All the friends I know that have the a7sii and have got this grip have the exact same problem. B&H should seriously stop selling a product that will ruin important shots. Having said all that, I will also say that a battery grip is the most important accessory besides memory cards and a huge stack of batteries. The a7 and a7ii Sony cameras are some of the least comfortable cameras to hold in the world. Once you put a battery grip on them, they then become a very comfortable camera in the hands. Still not as comfortable as the Nikon D750 (the most comfortable camera on the planet to hold) but it gets close. For me, if I hate holding it, I won't use it. I'll use another camera instead. But with the grip, I find myself reaching for it all the time and I truly love my a7sii now when before it was pretty annoying. One last thing, if I were only shooting stills with this and not video, I would prefer this grip to the sony because then I could live with the annoyance for the cheaper price. But if I can never trust the camera to continue recording because it may just stop on it's own, that becomes a deal breaker.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from STUCK IN CAMERA - Don't buy!! Bought two of these because they were so much cheaper than the Sony branded. They're cheap plastic feel matched the price, but I was ok with that. UNTIL THE FIRST GOT STUCK. Out on a shoot I needed to remove the grip and couldn't. It then stopped making a solid connection and I had to baby the grip for the rest of the day. Ended up having to pull it apart while still attached to my camera until I could see the 1/4 20 bolt enough to fit a saw blade on it and hack through. The wheel with the bolt connecting the grip to the camera is not metal and is not solidly attached. It must have slipped or cracked the plastic or something. Nothing anyone did could move the bolt at all. I thought I had just broken the first one (I'm rough on bodies on a shoot). Then my second one broke on me today. This is ridiculous.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase. Highly recommend. I am a professional wedding videographer and I just upgraded to the Sony A7S II. The camera body is nice and solid but for my big hands it was nearly impossible to hold easily because only about 3 of my fingers fit on the small hand grip. This grip not only adds that extra hand space to hold the camera up without hand fatigue, but it also allows you to use two batteries which is hugely important as this camera burns through batteries pretty quickly when used for video.
