    MindShift Gear Horizon 34L reviews

rotation180&deg Horizon 34L Backpack (Tahoe Blue) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal bag I was looking for a new bag for a while, and I heard about the MindShift Gear system. It is really working smoothly and it is a pleasure to be able to access and change your lens without having to put your backbag on the ground. Between the Panorama 22L and the Horizon 34L I didn't know which one to choose. The beltpacks are roughly the same size, the major difference is between the two main compartiments. I thing that the one for the Panorama is too small to be really usefull, and the one from the Horizon to be ideal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally an ideal backpack for me I need a day backpack for landscaping, in some situations where I have to stand in the water or on muddy ground, and camera position is very low, I find I can only keep the daypack on me, but it's hard and not safe to reach my camera gears. Since Mindshift Rotation came to market, it provides perfect solution for me, I can have backpack on my body and rotate it's beltpack in front of me to retrieve essential gears easily and safely. There are three different capacity of Rotation, the Professional 38L holds a ton of stuff but it is way too heavy, and Panorama 22L is light enough but the capacity is too small, finally the Horizon 34L is here striking a perfect balance on weight and capacity. In the beltpack I keep a Sony A7R with 16-35 f/4 attached, a FE55mm and Canon 24mm T/S lens, plus a Lee 100mm filter system, I keep Canon 70-200mm F/4 in the mail compartment. Now I have a perfect day backpack with all my essential gears.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product, but not for me I had pre-ordered this product and was super excited. When I first opened the box I was worried that the pack was too large for my needs. I wanted to use it while hiking and spin the belt pack around so I did not need to take if off. I like to do portraits in remote locations so I typically use a D810 with a 70-200mm. And there lies the problem, this very large pack was in fact too small for me. Even if I removed all of the inserts from the belt pack it could not hold the D810 with the lens on. Which defeats the purpose of fast access. Now let me say this, if you have a small camera or only use wide angle/kit lens then you maybe o.k., but the shape of the belt pack tapers so the listed sizes are really on the long ends. For measuring purposes I would reduce the measurements by 2 inches on all sides to be safe. This issue forced me to return it, but the build quality looked really good and I was super disappointed. I use pro-lens and a big body so you may not have the issue I had, but again give yourself a cushion on the stated measurements before buying. Still looking for a fast access pack that can hold my D810 and long lens. If you have a solution, respond back to this review. I would love to know.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Larger than Panorama, BUT? Definitely larger than Panorama BUT has limits compared to the Professional. Significantly lighter than Professional, BUT the belt pack is much smaller than the Professional. Nikon D800 with 24-70 attached fits in Horizon belt pack, but not much else except smaller odds and ends. Far more room in the Professional belt pack. You can slide in a laptop and other things around the insert in the upper compartment of the Horizon, which you can't do in the Panorama. When it comes to carrying a few bodies and several larger lenses, it's no match for the Professional. Bottom line - the Horizon's main positives are a) it's lighter than the Professional and b) larger than the Panorama. But it needs a larger belt pack. Otherwise well made and easy to carry. Recommendation really depends on what equipment you need to carry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This works! Over the years I have owned more photo bags and backpacks than I care to admit. Never have I been able to find that perfect ONE for travel. The one previous to this one, a LowePro Fastback 250 was nice, but was not balanced well when on your back and loaded with lots of photo gear. I went on an extensive search and finally pulled the plug on this pack. Suffice to say that I've been very pleased with this pack. It's incredibly versatile in that you can place a good amount of gear in the beltpack - a Canon 5D Mk III with 24-70mm f2.8 lens, a 50 mm f1.2 and a filter case. There's room for just a few more items if you want to stuff it in. But in reality the whole purpose of the belt pack is to allow for quick access to your gear when the moment presents itself. Hence, keep it simple and put any loose items in the upper compartment. The upper compartment is HUGE. I can put in a 13 MacBook Pro and iPad, plus clothing, more camera gear, etc. I purchased the divider for the upper compartment and it's definitely a safer way of putting in more camera equipment. You can easily place another 2 pro lenses, a full size pro body and flash. In other words, the pack easily adjusts to differing needs and situations. The smaller pocket in the front of the upper compartment is great for storing items that you need to get to quickly, i.e. reading glasses, airline tickets, passport, etc. It's great for those times when going through the TSA line that you need to throw all your incidental stuff like wallet, belt, phone, watch into the pack. The pack travels well. It fits in overhead compartments of all airlines I've traveled with so far. It will also fit under the seat if necessary. There's never been an issue to date. You never know what you're going to get when you order items like this online, but this has been one purchase that I've been very pleased with. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for both an everyday pack and a great travel bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally a bag worth buying So first let me start by saying that I am a picky guy. I had worked at a camera store for 5 years and had bought countless bags attempting to fit all my needs. I have had many a good bag, but never the perfect bag. This backpack is as close as I think I have ever been to finding the perfect bag. So what was it that I was looking for? - Something to carry all my gear easily (I shoot analog 4x5 and medium format) -comfortable -able to backpack with and carry all my necessities -able to withstand rain -ability to have a hydration pack -Is not designed to only fit an average DSLR well So this was very hard to find, my camera gear that I backpack with being a Hasselblad 501cm, 50mm, 80mm, 160mm, 3 backs, a light meter, tripod, plus all the other things i need to not die in the wilderness (clothes, food, water, etc.) can all fit well in this bag. The bags design allows my camera with 2 lenses, my filters, and my lens shade to all fit in the rotating waist pack. This is fantastic because now when Im hiking I can just simply stop, rotate my pack out, grab my gear and shoot. The waist pack also give me a area to change lenses, put something down for a second, switch filters, or whatever without having to put my gear on the floor or take my backpack off. The belt also has a few loops to easily attach things to, like my light meter. The top compartment is large enough to fit close to 2 days of supplies as well as some film, my 3rd lens, and misc. items like a headlamp, sleeping pad, etc. The top most bag easily fits things you need to grab often, like sunglasses, lip balm, a map, or whatever else you may need. The hyrdation compartment easily fits most any brand and easily holds my camelbak. There is also a large front compartent that though not deep could hold flat items if you need to. The waist pack can be easily removed from the backpack if needed and carried on its on, so when reaching base camp you could leave the large pack behind and just go with the smaller waist compartment to save weight. When used with the full backpack though it is extremely easy to rotate out and easily slides back in and closes with a magnet latch. The rain cover (sold on its own) perfectly fits the bag and also allows you to continue using the roatation feature while the bag is protected. Definitely watch the video on the manufacturers website to see how to attach everything. Overall I cannot speak highly enough about this bag, whoever designed it obviously put lots of thought into it, and definitely has a love for both nature and photography. Do yourself a favor if you like to backpack and take photos, buy this bag and you wont regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Photography Specific Backpack It is always a joy as a consumer to purchase a product that is as well thought out and well designed as this backpack. I made the initial mistake of purchasing an outdoor daypack which I tried to make fit the needs of a photographer. After this failed I bit the bullet and purchased this backpack. I am so glad I did. The rotation feature at the belt is so convenient. I took the backpack on a trip to the Pacific Northwest and watched as another photographer set his backpack on the ground to access his gear to photograph a waterfall. After he picked it up, I watched him brush all of the dirt off. I had my backpack on the entire time and was still able to access my camera with no cleaning needed. Everything on this backpack is so well thought out. I am a taller person at 6'5 and the backpack was comfortable to carry for 3 or 4 hours at a time with a full frame camera, 24-70 f/4, and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6. The 100-400 has to be carried in the upper compartment. If you are thinking about buying this, go ahead and do it, you won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hiker's Best Friend Went for a 5 hours hike in El Yunque National Rainforest and this is what I come back with. First: this bag is not for a Pro Body (ex: 1dx o 1-5D) or a camera with a battery grip. The only way a Pro body fits it's if the lens is taken off and stored right next to it in the 180 pouch. Speaking of the 180 pouch, it is the most genius thing I have seen in a bag. Picture this: you are in a muddy or wet place and you don't want to get that dirt in your bag but you have the perfect sunset. You just unhook the magnet and you sling the fanny pack pouch towards your waist, get the camera, take the shot, put it back on the pouch, sling it back and your bag never touched the floor. That's smart. I have a 7D Mark II and a 16-35 f/2.8 III and, without a battery grip, the camera fits perfectly in the pouch. I just put the extra battery in a mesh section in the pouch and that's it. Inside of the upper compartment is way too much space for food, sandwiches and drinks. In the inner compartment I was able to put a Polar Pro DJI Mavic Soft Case, a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, and a jacket with room to spare for a cellphone battery charger. The pocket to house a Camelback is genius, this is one of the things that sold me to the bag. The ability to have a Camelback with all your necessary photography equipment it had to come from people who are dealing with this problem. The last thing, and the one I dislike the most but not a deal breaker, is that the tripod does not stay attached to the bag with the 2 straps that come with the bag. I have a Manfrotto BeFree Compact Aluminum Travel Tripod and it made the bag lean backwards a lot. You may want to buy tripod straps or use one from other bags to make the center of gravity closer to you. All around, great great bag, hilly recommended for the hiker that goes on a full day hike to take pictures or to go to the beach with your bag.
