Cullmann CU 40847 overview

  • 1Description

The CONCEPT ONE OH4.5V Ball Head from Cullman is an Arca-type compatible hybrid photo/video ball head. When using the head in video mode, the ball is locked in place so it will only tilt on a front-to-back axis and pan 360°. The head stands 4.1" high, weighs 1.4 lb, and has a load capacity of 15.4 lb.

A large knob locks and unlocks the ball, while a smaller knob controls the 360° panning, and a separate knob adjusts the friction. The video knob allows the ball to be locked into place, preventing it from tilting off-axis so that you can get straight tilts when shooting video. A long pan handle can be easily attached to ensure smooth movements, and an Arca-type compatible quick-release plate is included to facilitate fast camera attachment.

CONCEPT ONE OH4.5V Ball Head is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent hybrid ball head I do mostly stills but some video and wanted a solid ball head that could accommodate both needs. It has an ingenious design that allows the ball head 360 rotation freedom for stills. But when you engage the mechanism that locks the ball, it only tilts on one plane. Combined with the panning mechanism, the rig serves as an excellent pan and tilt head. I use with a Canon 5DIII, 24-105mm and 100-400mm Pros: It is well built, locks down rock solid, relatively lightweight (1.5 lbs) and cheaper than the other options I've found for a hybrid system. Cons: The tripod plate is arca type. What that means is that the plate will work with an arca swiss type tripod mount, but an arca swiss plate will not work on this ball head. That means that I've have to purchase an additional plate for my telephoto lens (I don't know why they didn't just design it around the standard arca swiss dimensions?). Another con is that receptacles for inserting the removable handle are tight, so you have to line the handle up carefully and insert on the right plane. For me this is not a big deal because I just leave the handle on the unit, even if I am shooting stills. These minor issues did not cause me to dock the rating because it is a very good, sold unit. I would buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flexible all rounder - for photography & video My go to equipment are GH5+12-35mm lens for landscape video work; and Canon 6D+24-105mm f4 L lens for photography. I have been looking for a HYBRID tripod head for travel use. I think the CULLMAN Concept One OH4,5 Ballhead is perfect for my needs. This item has pros and cons: PROS: 1. It is superbly engineered and it feels it will last for many years. 2. The precision needed for photography and video work are different; and the CULLMAN handles both types of needs very well; although some practice will be required especially for video work. 3. The ball head is very smooth in both panning and tilt. 4. Good value for money. CONS: 1. For video work, it will take practice in order to find the correct tension in the knobs for panning and tilting unlike the fluid heads which specializes in video. But then it is still very much better(and lighter) than packing two ball heads(one for video and one for photography) while travelling. 2. It is fiddly to assemble. However, once assembled, it works beautifully!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Product I've only gotten this head about two weeks ago, I haven't really used it to give a review on its functionality, I'll have to do that later on; all for now I find its construction seems to be flawless, sturdy and strong.
