Cullmann CU 56281 overview

  • 1Description

The CONCEPT ONE 628 OT38 Aluminum Tripod with 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head from Cullmann can extend to 72", support up to 15.4 lb, and weighs 5.3 lb. Its 4-section legs fold up 180° around the head, contributing to its folded length of 18.9". Twist locks adjust the height of the legs, each of which has a foam grip on the top section and rubber feet that are replaceable with included stainless steel spikes. The rapid center column has a ballast hook for adding stabilizing weight, and the column can be replaced with an included short center column to allow the tripod to get down to 10.6".

The OT38 pan/tilt head features a +/- 90° tilt range, 360° panning, and an Arca-type compatible clamp with a 90mm quick release plate. Made from die-cast aluminum, the OT35 has detachable handles for easy storage, and degree scales for repeatable pan and tilts.

    Cullmann CU 56281 reviews

CONCEPT ONE 628 OT38 Aluminum Tripod with 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice strong legs, but the head... Purchased sight-unseen (couldn't find any locally in a brick-and-mortar store here in a city of 1 million in Canada). Cross-border shipping was very fast. Tripod was double-boxed. The tripod itself is nicely made and looks sturdy. Comes with a short column, Allen key and metal spikes to replace the rubber feet of the tripod. Instructions are in the form of pictures; some videos in german showing the tripod features are available on Youtube). The insistence on it being designed in Germany leads me to believe it is not german-made. The leg and column locks are of the twist 'em style and look positive, especially since the alloy used for the legs does not have a smooth finish. The pan/tilt head has a nice resistance and clear scales; there is one bubble level on top of one of the legs. Back to the head: while it has a nice lever-actuated locking mechanism which is claimed to be an Arca-type compatible clamp with a 90mm quick release plate, I am afraid that it is compatible only with a Cullmann plates: none of the compatibles I have mate successfully with the clamp, whether plates or lens collars. Which is a major disappointment for me, given this compatibility was my main reason for preferring over other brands. At this point, I either have to ditch the head and replace it with a truly Arca-compatible (I have an inexpensive one gathering dust here; I only have to hack something to mount it on the Cullmann columns, which come with a double boss on either sides of the female threads of the columns), or sell it (since I would pay a king's ransom to ship it back to the US, pay for the original free shipping, fight with customs here over taxes paid). To sum it up: a nice tripod, but one I regret buying.
